Leave them at home. It's just not worth the risk.

On my courses we discuss how batteries in toys and other items can cause burns, especially lithium batteries that can explode if put under pressure (bitten).
Here is the consequence as to what can happen if your dog accidently bites a lithium battery.

Who saw the Aurora Borealis last night?
Not me 🥲 I was 🥱😴.
But did you know the same atmospheric changes can also affect both yours and your dog's moods?
Interesting article about it 👇👇👇

Solar storms and how it may impact your dogs.

Scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated that dogs are sensitive to geomagnetic changes.

Currently the earth is experiencing a powerful solar storm. It's effects on our dogs should not be underestimated. Especially our sensitive working dogs who are bred to have a heightened sense of direction. Dogs who are anxious or nervous may experience exacerbated symptoms. Dogs are sensitive to even small changes in the earth's magnetic field, this current storm is big and disruptive.

Epileptic dogs and people may be affected. There is a huge body of evidence relating to solar storms and seizures, have a little Google, there's too many relevant bits of literature to post here.

What can you do? Dogs are at increased risk of becoming disorientated in new environments, keep them on lead, in sight, have a heightened awareness of where they are. For dogs who rely on their sense of direction for work such as sheepdogs working hills, search and rescue dogs, tracking dogs, hunting dogs and trail dogs, it might be worth evaluating putting off any work where a dog may get lost. This is not me being a f***y either, I've already heard of a couple of normally savvy dogs becoming lost and disoriented in the north of Scotland, out of character for them.

In humans existing mental health conditions can worsen temporarily, particularly conditions caused by or associated with trauma, where your integral ability to orientate becomes distrupted and makes you feel unsafe, increasing anxiety and hypervigilance. This change in your presentation can also impact your dogs.

Just something to be aware of. As much as it sounds like hippy woo woo nonsense, I can assure you, it's a thing.

"the idea that animals can detect Earth’s magnetic field has traveled the path from ridicule to well-established fact in little more than one generation. Dozens of experiments have now shown that diverse animal species, ranging from bees to salamanders to sea turtles to birds, have internal compasses. Some species use their compasses to navigate entire oceans, others to find better mud just a few inches away."

I have seen a lot of people sharing the information warning of the dangers of Rapeseed.
I too in the past have shared this. This is the most recent up to date and quantified information / advice from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine.
As always be vigilant and it is advisable not to let you dogs eat or play in farmers crops, but only mid symptoms are likely, severe reactions are very rare.

🌟Worried about your dog and rapeseed?🌟

At this time of year, we start to notice lots of posts circulating social media regarding rapeseed; these posts are shared extensively and can understandably worry many dog owners. The posts usually state that rapeseed is highly poisonous to dogs, and can cause signs including haemolytic anaemia, blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders and breathing problems.

These posts are misinformation.

The signs mentioned are typically only seen in grazing animals, and most dogs actually remain asymptomatic after exposure to rapeseed. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset if they have ingested some of the plant, and there have been reports of skin reactions which resemble burns, but this is extremely rare and does not happen to every dog which comes into contact with it.

💡📣 Spotlight on Host 📣💡
On Sunday 19th May, I will be holding my first course for Sit & Go Northallerton .
My other courses in North Yorkshire have been sell out events, so I expect this one to be as well. This is currently the last course in North Yorkshire for a while.
To book a place on the course please email : [email protected]

A little about the host:
SIt and Go Northallerton, run by Emma and Louise, has over 30 years combined experience in working with dogs and other animals. They met whilst working for the UK's Largest Canine welfare charity and decided to set up their own business in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. They are both dog mad and would much rather be out in the changeable english weather than in an office.

Emma and Louise currently focus on dog walking and pet sitting services in the local area and this year are looking to help bridge the gap in knowledge between pet owners, and pet professionals starting with this Canine first aid course.

Sit and Go dog walking services are tailored to each individual dog's needs and requirements, from puppies to golden oldies, and offer solo walks as well as smaller group outings where suitable. Pet sitting is offered in the owners home to help keep the dogs in their own surroundings and routines.

They have also volunteered abroad for a Spanish rescue charity that they now sponsor and were introduced to Spanish dog breeds that are rare over here, increasing their knowledge and skill base.

Did you know that dogs can get Glaucoma too?
If caught early enough it can be controlled with eye drops. This is one of the reasons we advise weekly health checks of your dogs.

If you notice cloudiness, leakage or bulging in your dog's eyeball, this could be a sign of glaucoma. 👁️

Dog First Aid Franchise Ltd advises that, if left untreated, this could sadly lead to severe pain, permanent damage or even total blindness. Your vet will be able to suggest the best course of treatment so be sure to speak with them when you notice one or more of these signs, as early as possible, as glaucoma is easier to manage in the early stages. 🩺
