Socialization is the most important part of raising a puppy. It's not just about playing with other dogs, in fact, that is less important than what you may think. Dogs need to safely learn about and experience the world as they feel comfortable. Give them the time and support they need to come out of their shell and blossom into the dog they will become.

The goal is for puppies to have purposeful, positive experiences with other dogs/animals, handling, noises, people, surfaces, smells, sights, objects and locations/experiences. These experiences need to be safe and happy, and not be rushed.

Had a wonderful time talking to the folks at the Start Summit yesterday! Lots of great people who wanted to learn about force-free dog training techniques. And I had a wonderful assistant, Penny the Rottweiler. She was such a sweet girl and very helpful. Extremely proud of this puppy! Kodak is a high-energy, non-stop playing pup. He and Vinny are constantly playing bitey face or chase. But at 0600 this can be very overwhelming for myself and my senior canine assistant Sophie.

So, we have been working on impulse control. This morning I interrupted playtime, mostly because Vinny wasn’t comfortable and wanted it to stop. I asked Kodak to stop in mid-play and chill for a bit. He not only stopped, he went and laid down! He allowed everyone to wake-up and have coffee (me). Then after an hour, he got up and asked Vinny to play again. This time he was ready and they were out in the yard having a blast.

And note that he chose to lay on the couch near Sophie, who does not enjoy energetic pups, and they were very comfortable.

Impulse control is very important to young puppies, to teach them boundaries and respecting other puppers communication signals. Patience and consistency is key to training.

Way to go Kodak!

Welcome Kodak to the Bravo Zulu family! He is doing our board and train program. He becomes part of our household and gets trained for almost 2 weeks.

The board and train dog must get along with the resident dogs in order to participate. See picture below of all three pups watching the world go by 💙
