Sunday Volunteer Report

6 volunteers. Welcome new volunteer Marybeth. Good things to come!

32 horses handled today. Those services provided to the herd were finish clipping of Dude, baths, grooming, doctoring if needed, fly mask checking and changeouts, etc.

Light cleanup has started around the barn and yard. This is in prep for the Open House.

Thank you all for your dedication!

Fri-yay volunteer report

6 volunteers today. Welcome Valerie who has been visiting the last few weeks.

Farrier day - Keith had 5 pedis. Blue, Princess , Sunday, Jazz and Henry. Darryl had Z reset and Twister1 resets. He got two front boots on Tonka. Z must have loved his reset because later he was running around with Jazz and Wendy.

Total count was 33 animals treated/handled. This number included the 8 farrier count. Grooming , clipping, baths, bandage checks or rebandages, boo-boo doctiring when needed and treats etc were done. It was a great day.

Wendy was trying out for reindeer games. Zeke was also involved. She was also checking out the remaining donated pumpkins.

Dude looks like a paint. His two tone color was a result of rechargeable clippers not recharging to meet his lack of drying so Linda could get him done. This will be finished up this weekend. Linda was determined to try to get him done today.

Laundry folded, washed and rehung.

Add pictures if you have any.

Congrats to volunteer Lisa Wright hitting the 12/12 mark today. If you don’t already know, Lisa kicks ass!

Weekender volunteer day will be Sunday.

Thank you Veterans for your service!

Monday Volunteer Report

Six volunteers. Others stopped by to say their farewells to Hippie. Definitely a barn favorite for many. For those that couldn’t make it, we made sure by name to wish him well from you.

18 horses were handled today. Baths for Captain, George, Gaz, Jazz and Sunday. Some liked it better than others. Ha!

Bandage checking and/or changing when needed, minor boo-boo doctoring, mud removal, general grooming, fly spraying, mask checking and changing we’re done by all.

Tommy and Bentley were very good and enjoyed their volunteers attention.

I spent time with Spirit today. He is such a kind soul. Even if a potential new girlfriend was around he talked to them but did not misbehave while I was grooming him. He had two pretty good fairy knots but they ended up no challenge at all! He has no other skin issues and I can’t wait to see what he looks like in three months.

See you at the barn.

Wednesday Volunteers Report

10 volunteers today

35 horses got handled today and each received varying degrees of services. Some bandage changes and checks were done. A bath for Dude was given by Heather. This was in prep for clipping later this week. Boo-boos were doctored. Fly spray for many. Splinter that Danny and Bill found in Dusty’s neck was removed by Dr. Karie. CC got some much needed attention from April and Lori. All donkeys except Dodger got curried and sprayed by Kat. Lisa got to all her patients. Barb got Gaz done. She also brought out Twister1 and groomed her while Lisa was changing Princess’ bandage. Several volunteers got reintroduced to Angel. Spirit is quite the charmer. Many other horses got to spend time with our volunteers.

Thank you Bob for getting the rest of the shade cloths and broken wire down. Timing is good on this especially if that invest makes it’s way to us next week. Lisa and Kat were helping.

Tortoise wrangling can be added to April, Heather and Lori’s resume today. Lisa noticed on her way out there was a tortoise out with the goats. We got it back in the pen and tried to block any future escapes by blocking the hole he escaped from.

Waters were filled.

Laundry was put away, done and hung!

Friday is farrier day.

Add any pictures.

Thank you everyone for your time and dedication.

See everyone at the barn!

Rescue is tough. The guilt can be insurmountable.

Without our volunteers, I would be crushed under the weight. I’m so grateful for our team!

Under-talked about part of rescue….

The biggest thing no one could have prepared me for getting into rescue is the constant guilt.

Guilt for the dogs you can’t help. For walking out of a shelter with one dog and passing by a line of others just as deserving practically screaming help me. For that litter of puppies you got an email about, likely to be dumped and face a life of suffering because as so many other, we are full and have no where for them to go.

Guilt for having to tell people sometimes in the lowest points of their lives that you can’t help. For the good citizen trying to help a stray in an area without an animal shelter. For the overworked animal control staff pleading in your inbox. For simply not having the physical space, fosters, or funds to help and having to relay the bad news time and time again.

Guilt for the dogs you were too late to save. For looking in their eyes laying on that vet floor and know they never got to experience the life they deserved. For the dog in heart failure or puppies with parvo, too far gone to save. For knowing they very well may be leaving this world having only known suffering.

Guilt for missing a thank you to a donor or not saying thank you enough. For them not knowing how much you truly appreciate them and couldn’t be more grateful, but in the midst of all things rescue, you haven’t had a chance to get that thank you note out.

Guilt for always feeling like the time you spend with dogs isn’t enough. For having vet appointments, meet and greets, rescue missions that go longer than expected and cut into your time with them.

Guilt for having your own aging dogs at home who so much irreplaceable time with is given up. For watching, or missing watching, them age before your eyes because rescue takes over. For how much they have to share, cope and adjust to meet the needs of the constant revolving door of fosters.

Guilt for the mountain of emails and messages that go without a response because there’s simply only so much time in a day. For some messages going unopened because the subject line alone is enough to tell your empty tank at the end of a heartbreaking day, your heart literally could not bare it right now.

Guilt for taking a moment to do anything other than rescue knowing there’s that inbox full of unopened messages waiting, dog to walk, kennels to clean, appointments to schedule, so. much. paperwork. to do, the list goes on….

Guilt for not always immediately replying to foster or adopter texts because your hands are full of p**p covered puppies, in the middle of a rescue mission or other. For them not knowing you really did glance at the text on your watch to make sure it wasn’t an emergency, told yourself you’d reply as soon as you finished, but end up forgetting for a couple hours.

Guilt for being absent from family and friends, missing events, celebrations, time together. For holidays turning into some of the only times you spend together, and even then, there‘s always a good chance a rescue emergency will interfere then too.

Guilt for your own spouse at home getting whatever is left in your empty tank at the end of the day. For gracefully dealing with all the new dogs to show up out of the blue, jumping in to help get them set up. For the messy house, for the garage and spare bedrooms turning into storage rooms for supplies.

For me personally, it is the guilt.

I know I can’t be the only one either.

Be kind to your small rescues. Chances are… behind that rescue name and fancy licensing is just a single person or couple person team doing they best they can — and carrying an overwhelming amount of guilt already.
