Soaking up some sunshine does a few things for tortoises and turtles. It called basking (nothing to do with Carole baskin). Basking warms them up first and foremost. But it also allow them to absorb some natural UVB. UVB is very important in the process/synthesis of vitamin D3 which allows the reptiles to absorb calcium in their system.Calcium helps in multiple ways.most important it prevents/reverses MBD (Metabolic Bone Diseases). Calcium also help females from eggs. Without proper nutrients and natural UVB or synthetic UVB, it’s tough for females to form healthy eggs. It’s very important during the breeding season when the females are cranking out eggs. Calcium level needs to be increased and natural sunlight/synthetic sunlight with UVB is a must.

As it’s happening across the country, testudos are going through their fall breeding. The females will hold the eggs overwinter while they brumate (hibernation). When they wake up from brumation some of these females will lay their eggs sighing 30 days of being awake.some females will host the male’s s***m overwinter and use it in the spring to fertilize the eggs that the have formed inside them since they waking up from brumation. Love is in the air, and why should it be, it’s hump day!
