It's unfortunate news that our group class cannot continue during MCO 3.0. Doing the right thing is more important than choosing our personal gains sometimes.

Now, back to only having private classes!

Doggie play.

Continue on the topic of canine body language. I personally feel that learning the language of animals is the biggest part in understanding our pets. Many misunderstood puppies or dogs often develop anxiety, reactivity as they grow.

The above infographic depicts what happens typically at dog parks or mingling interaction with multiple dogs in one space.

It is ok for your dog to growl and snap at an annoying dog.
It is OK for your dog to not smell or play with other dogs.
It's also ok if your dog wants to play but gets snapped at.

It's part and parcel of their communication with their own species. Dog fights rarely occurs because 80% of the time our dogs know how to sort it out themselves.

By moving away or using calming signals. Which I will talk about in the next body language post.

As an advocate for our pet it's best we provide safety and comfort when necessary. So that they learn to trust and be confident with us and WE in turn, learn to trust them.

The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
❗Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
❗Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
❗Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
❗Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD).

After one whole week of Christmas, back again with more great info. Happy New year in advance to all of you too!

Common mistakes when training fetch or what not to do.

1. Snatching your dogs toy from its mouth directly (will result in dog running away if you try to get hold of toy or tug-o-war game)
2. Chase your dog if your dog doesn't drop toy (the previous post I talked about how fetch is actually two behaviours : chasing and letting go)
3. Prying open your dogs mouth so he releases the toy (will result in the same effect as point number 1.)

Posts are not meant to wrong/call out/judge anyone or meant to make anyone feel they're not doing enough with their dog. It's never too late to start being better for anything. Drop me a message if you need help with anything! (I'm not all for your money only, I genuinely want to help) ❤️🇲🇾

Instinctively dogs are born to chase.

Also instinctively they are not born to share their goods.

With this two contradicting factors it can be challenging to teach the fetch command.

The good news? Their behaviour can be shaped!

There are a few ways I like to teach fetch. While shaping, these 2 behaviours must be shaped separately.

First start of with shaping the "chase". Get your dog thrilled about being able to chase. Be thrilled yourself that he is chasing this would amp up your dogs excitement. You can use a single toy or two of the same toys. I prefer the latter.

What comes later (2-3weeks) is teaching your dog to release the toy on command. And rewarding the release immediately. Then repeat this cycle.

Once it's all fun and thrilling to chase down the toy for your dog and he sees that he can only chase the toy if your throw it you are halfway onto a good fetch command.

Dog training pretty much sums up the meaning of the quote above. It's more than just a disciplinary practice. It's a way of life with dogs.

I'd like to be as transparent and honest with my clients/students on training methods. Tho sometimes using proper scientific terms when having a conversation with a client can cause more confusion haha.

So here are some helpful infographic that depicts the science behind the method I use. In short I use the balance method, the fundamental principle that behaviours are driven by consequences.

This way of training can also be called real life training. Because it is literally what happens in life, day to day, to any living organism.

For instance, a dog wants to cross the dog to get to shelter on the opposite (a goal, and if he succeeds its positive reinforcement). One day when he tries to cross the road a car honks (positive punishment).

Unconsciously the next example is most commonly applied by many actually, not only just us dog trainers.

It's training the 'sit'. Hold food in front of dog, dog sits get food (positive reinforcement). Hold food higher dog jumps up, withdraw food(negative punishment)to reduce behaviour of jumping up, dog sits get food. Hold food in front of dog, dog jumps us, gets a correction on the leash(positive punishment), dog sits gets food. Then lastly, to teach the dog to sit longer, withdrawing food if dog gets up too quick(negative reinforcement- removing something to increase a desired behaviour), then when dog waits desired duration it gets food.

Dog training is highly nuanced. Its like learning to drive. Don't give up!

Swipe left to get a better idea of what I'm about to explain next!

The 3 big things that go unseen and unnoticed of dogs 'losing control'

1. Distance - the space between the dog and the trigger (1m, 10m,etc)

2. Duration - the amount of time spent focusing/magnetizing on the trigger (0.25s, 1s, 3s, etc)

3. Distraction - the surrounding environment your dog is in with trigger/s (neighbourhood, park, cafe, etc)

Find your dogs threshold to each factor for each trigger. For example; cats.
1. He alerts to the presence of a cat at 3m. Pass the 3m mark he starts going bonkers, before the 3m mark he only looks.
2. At 3m, if he stares 3s and above he gets frustrated and tries pulling to go over.
3. Every 3m on the walk there's a cat.

Always find ways to keep your dog under threshold while training his reactivity. You may not get everything right the first time and don't try to.

Remember it's about understanding your dog and what works best. Not about getting the perfect behaviour or perfect attitude.

It can be stressful having a reactive dog, so take it easy.

Each dog is different. Not every dog gets triggered the same way.

Triggers happen in the context of excitement, fear, anxiety, etc. The context your dog is in when triggered is what you want to look at. Sometimes it can be a combination of contexts.

Example your dog barks and lunges as he sees another dog walking over. It can be excitement + frustration + anxiety.

To identify what triggers your dog, it is best to allow your dog to encounter it. Something that'd cause your dog to have a reaction, usually a negative reaction. Commonly seen triggers are other dogs, bikes, kids, etc.

List your dog's triggers from highly triggered to moderately triggered to least triggered to not triggered.

Next post I will talk about another aspect of triggers that highly influences reactive behaviour in dogs. Something that many isn't aware of when it comes to reactivity and dog behaviour.

24/11/2020

Because its party time and FREEDOMM AND TEMPTATIONSSS.

Freedom from what? From the rules and structure at home.

Then, does that mean freedom is bad for dogs? Nope.

It just means whatever rule and structure is applied at home, can be and should be applied on walks and outside.

At home, certain things are allowed, certain things aren't, the walk should be the same. At home, there is a balance of relaxation and discipline, the walk should be the same.

Expose ur dog to the outside world gradually, implement what should be and shouldn't be when outside also gradually. Do not rush ahead for a perfect dog or a perfect walk.

Instead, be patient and grateful for the opportunity to bond with your dog.

Ninnie ninnie ninnieee! I called her Minnie the whole session only to find out later its ninnie 🤣

Her owner wanted to only work on her hand-biting habit and the "hand" command.

During the session I found out that ninnie has a thing with hands and she starts biting hands only because she don't want u to hold her legs. U could see in the 1st and 2nd video where she would back away when my hand got near. Contradicting eh.

Little by little I get her to think that my hand isn't something that will grab her and even if I do I'd let go. Eventually she started lifting her paw up a little.

3 days later the owner sent me an update. SHE GOT ITTT! A full hand command.

Super happy😱☺️❤️

Walkies prep 😜😂 ft. Nikki the lab.

Some walking inspo 🙂
Build your relevance with your dog when it comes to walking on leash, convey to your dog the speed or distance you want him to be walking at.

Write down in specifics what is acceptable when walking and what is not. Eg, walk not more than 1 feet in front of me for 10steps. Work on one thing at a time. Stay focused.
