Cooper - 2 year old South Steens mustang gelding, available for a new home! This spectacular gelding is not only beautiful, he was the senior division in-Hand champion at the 2022 MYWY mustang challenge, where he went from wild to competition-ready in 120 days! He is a red dun pinto, with a snowflake rump, should mature 14.2-14.3. (currently 14 hands at the withers and 14.2 at the top of his rump) He is friendly and brave, and likes to learn and do. Cooper is the classic left-brain extrovert on the horsenality chart. He has been shown in showmanship and trail obstacle challenges. He is easy to catch, lead, handle, load, haul, stand tied, and have his feet trimmed. Cooper has a mild club foot on his left front hoof, which will require regular trimming, but does not affect his gait or soundness. X-rays are available. To see Cooper's entire journey from wild to competition ready, please scroll through his page, Cooper's Mustang Madness Journey,

He is not yet titled, but is available through the BLM process for re-assignment, with a training fee. The BLM requires 5 foot fencing to bring home a gentled, untitled mustang, but once you know you can catch and handle him, he can be in any kind of horse safe fencing. Please message for more information or to set up a time to meet him!

Surprise! Cooper is back! His adoptor offered him back to me, so he is here again, almost exactly one year after he first arrived :-). He has grown 2 inches in height, and his mane and tail are long!

Cooper's 4th class was called Obstacle, and it was like an arena trail class. We missed getting video of the first half, which saves you from having to watch me run 🙂. We trotted over a series of ground poles, and then kept trotting through a row of cones in a serpentine, came to a halt, and backed up. Then there was a cool obstacle, a raised side pass, with pieces of pool noodle sticking up that rubbed his tummy as he moved sideways over it. He was one of only 2 horses at the whole show who did this successfully. But sadly, you will have to use your imagination. The video picks up where he has to stand with his front feet on a round wooden disc and move his hind feet around in a circle without letting his front feet step off. Then a skinny bridge, where again you can see me struggling to get the lead rope out of his teeth. Then a straddle pole, where he had to keep both of his left feet on the left side, and both right feet on the right side, and then at the end we ground tie.

And finally, Cooper's Freestyle class. For this one we design our own pattern that we feel shows off our horse best. We bring in our own obstacles and choose music, can use costumes and props, and have exactly 3 minutes. We are judged partly on technical skill and horsemanship, and partly on creativity and entertainment value. I was going for a working ranch horse theme because that's what I thought he would be well suited for.

Cooper's third class was called Pattern, and it is the equivalent of 4-H Showmanship. We had to be able to lead at a walk and trot, stop, back, turn 90 degree turns, and 180 degree turns. In his nervousness he took to trying to chew on the lead rope. You might notice me struggling with him on this.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get videos uploaded! Cooper's first class was Body Conditioning; it wa basically a vet check of weight, coat, and hooves. No video of that. His second class was Handling. It is a test of some of the basic skills a gentle mustang should know. We had to be able to lead, pick up feet, release and re-catch in a corral, brush, spray with fly repellent, and load in a trailer.

Congratulations to Terri Howard and Olivia, Cooper's new adopters!

Today is Cooper's last day at home with me. My sister and I took him, and his pasture friend, Benny the B***o, for a walk. What an amazing journey it has been! Tomorrow we leave for the Mustang Madness and the competition begins!

Today we went to an Equine Trail Sports event. We showed in the in-hand novice trail division. He was great on some obstacles, not so great on others, and distracted in between :-). There were 10 or more horses all moving around the arena at the same time. Thank you to Michelle Kreutzer for snapping this shot of us waiting for our turn!

Here are a couple clips of Cooper from last weekend, out trail riding.

Curious about Cooper's personality? If you are familiar with the "horsenality" chart, he is a left brain extrovert! Cooper is going to be a horse that likes to get out and do stuff!

Because Cooper was born in the BLM corrals, he never had some of the experiences he might have out on the range; lakes and rivers, for example. This week I took Cooper to a small lake. He was skeptical at first, but we did our sending exercise until he stepped in, and then he had a great time!

14/07/2022

I took Cooper to a playday with some other horses, to practice obstacles. This is an exercise in "sending" where I ask him to go through something without me leading. It does two things; 1, it is a test of his confidence to go first rather than follow me, and 2, it gives him the room to think for himself how he can best navigate the obstacle.

If you are interested in bidding on Cooper or any of the other horses available at Mustang Madness on August 6th, they are asking you to use a specific adoption application which is on the MYWY website. You can also see the catalog of horses available on this page!
https://www.mustangyearlingswashingtonyouth.org/adopters
Also, if you are unable to attend but would like to bid by phone, there is a process for you to do that. Let me know and I will get you connected to that info :-).

MYWY competitors have until summer to decide if they are keeping their in-hand competition animal (all mustangs in the mounted division will automatically go to auction).  During the summer a list of animals that will be available at the auction will be listed here on the website and shared in the ...

I am trying to see that Cooper has as many new experiences as possible. Today I took him to the Sahara Creek Horse Camp and he got to spend some time on a high line! This is a method of tying horses frequently used by back country riders. We didn't stay overnight, but he was very good tied for a while before and after a trail ride.

Sorry I haven't been posting enough! The last couple weeks have been busy with summer things :-). But Cooper is doing great! One of the things on his checklist of skills is that he needs to be ok in a stall. We don't have any stalls, but thankfully my neighbors do! Big shout out and thank you to Alex and Kathy Tuza at Thunder Ranch and Training Center for keeping Cooper overnight in a stall! He was flat out sound asleep when I went to get him this morning :-). Stall pictures are hard, but here he is!
