Three January images from one WA commercial shooter that tell quite a story…

1. Describing the extreme heat overnight and the many hours that gutted kangaroos were hanging from the back of his open ute, no doubt covered in insects… sound hygienic?

2. Shooting in drizzle. We are constantly told that commercial shooters are ‘humane’ because they have to take an accuracy test. Obviously, ALL shooters should have to take an accuracy test, but even if they do it does not exempt them from human error. We know that they wound and leave kangaroos to suffer a horrendously slow and painful death. Human error is exacerbated when they are shooting in wind, rain and fog.

3. A kangaroo shot in the neck in contravention of the Code of Practice. Also a wound on his arm. This shooter need only cut the head off under the neck wound for his body to be accepted by a processor.

This is the ‘professional’ kangaroo industry…

Never believe that headshots are ‘humane’. Kangaroo heads are a small moving target that shooters are aiming for in the dark and with variable weather conditions.

Many are inevitably wounded, and some escape with those wounds to suffer and die slowly over many days.

This poor boy returned to his carer at Wildwood Wildlife Shelter - Gariwerd (Vic) with his jaw blown apart. No kangaroo should have to suffer like this. No carer should have to face this horror.

A commercial shooter from NSW shared this with a happy new year message saying ‘a little vid to get u all excited for next years hunting be safe and have fun’.

He is ‘excited’ to kill a mother in front of her small joey (which likely then died slowly without her care), and finds it ‘fun’ to shoot mob mates in front of each other. There is far more humanity to be seen in the kangaroos’ brief interactions before death than from the ghoul who shot them.

Why is Tanya Plibersek letting these psychopaths profit from the slaughter of precious wildlife? Is this a good look for the Australian Government?

Pet food companies like Lyka tout their kangaroo meat as being ‘human-grade’ as though that makes it acceptable. What does it tell you when even the shooters get confused between pet and human grade?

A beautiful kangaroo cruelly shot somewhere other than the head in contravention of the national Code of Practice. You know it’s bad when even other shooters know it’s wrong. The Australian Government always promotes how shooters abide by the Code when in reality it’s completely unenforceable. The cruelty won’t stop until the killing stops.

The bond between mother and joey is tender and loving, a true joy to witness. These families are brutally ripped apart for profit. Roughly one third of all kangaroos shot commercially are female, and many will be mothers leading to hundreds of thousands of sensitive little joeys being killed and orphaned every year.

Shooters rarely mention or picture joeys (perhaps even they are ashamed?) but we get the odd glimpse into the fate they suffer. Please see the captions for detail where detail is available.

For those that don’t know, the national Code of Practice dictates that pouch joeys should be bashed to death and at foot joeys should be shot. However, at foot joeys regularly escape to die of exposure and starvation. The Code of Practice acknowledges the potential for cruelty to both pouch and at-foot joeys, and there is no training, proficiency testing or in-field monitoring to mitigate this inevitable suffering.

This is the work of a commercial kangaroo shooter. Yep, this is a ‘professional’. These kangaroos were neck shot in contravention of the national Code of Practice. Their heads are removed in the field, and with a little extra effort, the neck can also be removed before going to the chiller. There is no way of ensuring kangaroos are killed humanely and we know they are often left to suffer or escape with horrific wounds. The cruelty won’t stop until the killing stops.

More wounding out of Victoria. Recent data from Wildlife Victoria has shown that call-outs for gunshot wounding victims has increased by 55% since the full commercial industry was launched in 2019.

Meanwhile the Australian Labor Australian Government is busy trying to tell the Americans that the kangaroo industry is humane 🙄

More evidence of how the kangaroo bushmeat industry is absolutely filthy. Look at the cross contamination between wild species, processed without PPE and left with cavities open to bugs and dust. It is a zoonotic disease waiting to happen.

More evidence of little children being exposed to the trauma and risk of kangaroo shooting and pig do***ng. Not only do they risk physical injury, they risk exposure to parasites and disease from handling wild animals without protective equipment. Note that one child is holding a knife, is the parent letting him help with field dressing? Do they bash the joeys to death in front of their kids too?

Surprise surprise, landholder claims of massive kangaroo numbers aren’t always true. I’ve regularly heard landholders complaining about a ‘plague’ because there’s a couple of dozen kangaroos in the back paddock. That’s a small family mob for goodness sake, they eat less than one cow and improve the ecology, yet still apparently they don’t have the right to exist in peace on their own country. It is infuriating.

A tragic case from Greendale, Victoria. This mother kangaroo was seen by locals starving and suffering with a huge neck wound. Volunteer rescuers from Woodlands Wildlife Shelter found the wound was full of maggots and her joey had starved to death.

This is a consequence of cruel policies from Dan Andrews, Ingrid Stitt MP, Gayle Tierney MP and Tanya Plibersek.

More for the dossier on dirty ‘field dressing’ where wild kangaroos are dragged from where they are shot and hung up on the back of the shooter’s ute. From there the shooter (usually without gloves or protective equipment of any kind) eviscerates, beheads and dismembers them amongst the dirt, dogs, bugs and other wild species. In this batch you will see wild pigs, foxes and dingoes strung up with the kangaroos.

This filthy wildlife trade should be a big red flag for the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC Global. Does the European Commission really think this is safe and acceptable?

Field depots (often retrofitted storage containers) are a breeding ground for disease. Note lack of gloves and protective clothing, presence of junk, grime, congealed blood, mixed species touching, corpses jammed together… they can stay like this for two weeks before processing.

Before storage they are dangled around in the open air with heat, dust and insects after being carried around on the back of a ute all night.

NB: short necks are a sign that the Kangaroo was not headshot as it is harder to decapitate lower down the neck.

Posted @withrepost • @bearwitnessaustralia CONTENT WARNING- Graphic images ⁣ ⁣ Imagine being shot in the face, but not fatally...⁣ ⁣ Despite ongoing drought, urban expansion and habitat clearing, commercial and recreational shooting of native wildlife is still a common occurrence. ⁣ ⁣ Unlike the slaughter line, there isn’t even the facade of welfare measures in place, no restraints, no stunning, no quick death, in fact, no death ensured at all. ⁣ ⁣ Injured animals are often left to live with painful wounds from where infections grow and spread, slowly and painfully killing their host. ⁣ ⁣ This young kangaroo had been shot in the face but survived the ordeal, only to ultimately succumb to the infected and maggot infested wound. Able to eat and drink just barely, it’s unclear how long he was living with this. ⁣ ⁣ When a good Samaritan arrived to his aid to end his miserable existence, we were finally able see the full extent of the wound he endured. We cannot imagine his suffering.⁣ ⁣ Just to clarify- euthanasia was arranged right away, but took a couple hours for someone to arrive as this was in a rural area.
