⚠️ GRAPHIC. DON’T LIKE IT? DON’T BUY IT. ⚠️
This one is extra tough as it shows the bodies of battered joeys. It is VERY important evidence for those who need it for advocacy, but if you don’t need it, please spare yourself.
These images show the results of the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) ‘Drought Support Package’ (basically a macropod extermination program). The ‘Package’ includes financial incentives for registered ‘Field Harvesters’ (i.e. accredited commercial kangaroo shooters) to kill as many kangaroos as possible. If they get a job where the kangaroos are not going to a chiller (i.e. non-commercial), the shooters must submit a photograph the dead kangaroo spray painted with numbers in order to claim the financial incentive.
Local advocates sourced many images submitted to PIRSA by shooters via FOI. The evidence showed some were clearly not humanely killed (to be shared in due course), and also these horrific pictures of brutalised joeys.
This is crucial evidence, as shooters so rarely share images of joeys, and certainly none this graphic.
Whilst these joeys were killed non-commercially, the shooters are ‘professionals’, and both the commercial and non-commercial Codes of Practice prescribe a blow to the head for furred pouch young. So these images represent the violence of non-commercial eradication programs, and the reality of the commercial kangaroo trade.
