This is the work of a commercial kangaroo shooter. Yep, this is a ‘professional’. These kangaroos were neck shot in contravention of the national Code of Practice. Their heads are removed in the field, and with a little extra effort, the neck can also be removed before going to the chiller. There is no way of ensuring kangaroos are killed humanely and we know they are often left to suffer or escape with horrific wounds. The cruelty won’t stop until the killing stops.

More wounding out of Victoria. Recent data from Wildlife Victoria has shown that call-outs for gunshot wounding victims has increased by 55% since the full commercial industry was launched in 2019.

Meanwhile the Australian Labor Australian Government is busy trying to tell the Americans that the kangaroo industry is humane 🙄

Not only do they risk physical injury, they risk exposure to parasites and disease from handling wild animals without protective equipment. Surprise surprise, landholder claims of massive kangaroo numbers aren’t always true. I’ve regularly heard landholders complaining about a ‘plague’ because there’s a couple of dozen kangaroos in the back paddock. That’s a small family mob for goodness sake, they eat less than one cow and improve the ecology, yet still apparently they don’t have the right to exist in peace on their own country. It is infuriating.

A tragic case from Greendale, Victoria. This mother kangaroo was seen by locals starving and suffering with a huge neck wound. Volunteer rescuers from Woodlands Wildlife Shelter found the wound was full of maggots and her joey had starved to death.

This is a consequence of cruel policies from Dan Andrews, Ingrid Stitt MP, Gayle Tierney MP and Tanya Plibersek.

More for the dossier on dirty ‘field dressing’ where wild kangaroos are dragged from where they are shot and hung up on the back of the shooter’s ute. From there the shooter (usually without gloves or protective equipment of any kind) eviscerates, beheads and dismembers them amongst the dirt, dogs, bugs and other wild species. In this batch you will see wild pigs, foxes and dingoes strung up with the kangaroos.

This filthy wildlife trade should be a big red flag for the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC Global. Does the European Commission really think this is safe and acceptable?

Field depots (often retrofitted storage containers) are a breeding ground for disease. Note lack of gloves and protective clothing, presence of junk, grime, congealed blood, mixed species touching, corpses jammed together… they can stay like this for two weeks before processing.

Before storage they are dangled around in the open air with heat, dust and insects after being carried around on the back of a ute all night.

NB: short necks are a sign that the Kangaroo was not headshot as it is harder to decapitate lower down the neck.

Working dogs are supposed to be kept separate to avoid contaminating the “game”, but as per usual there is virtually no compliance and shooters are do whatever they please. Dogs are traipsing around the carcasses in the field and at the depots, and dead dingos are handled alongside the kangaroo bodies. It is a hive of cross-contamination! The industry is dirty, deranged and lawless, and puts us all at risk.

More cases of non-fatal wounding. All were found alive and spent days or even weeks starving and suffering with infected maggot-riddled wounds.

This is NOT humane. RSPCA Australia recently ditched kangaroo meat because of the cruelty. It CANNOT meet humane standards because an instant kill is not reliable and inevitably there will be suffering from wounding, not to mention the suffering of joeys.

Yet companies like Lyka Pet Food have the gall to call this ‘pain-free culling’. They should be publicly disgraced for the lies they tell about this industry. It’s sickening.

Again this is thanks to Dan Andrews and Victorian Labor with nothing done by Anthony Albanese and Tanya Plibersek. Shame.

Some more insights from industry insiders, meat workers in this case, on the contamination of kangaroo meat.

The kangaroo trade is cruel and unsustainable, but this bushmeat is also clearly unhygienic and dangerous. Even if people don’t give a damn about animal welfare and wildlife, why would anyone risk feeding this to beloved pets, let alone themselves?

This is the sight faced by volunteer wildlife rescuers across the country for the “lucky” kangaroos that are euthanised rather than left to expire in agony.

NEWSFLASH: even if a shooter passes an accuracy test of five shots under controlled conditions (not representative of those in the field), THEY STILL MISS. They are human and they make mistakes. In an industry so massive, the number of mistakes are enormous and the suffering they leave behind is astronomical.

Imagine being shot in the face, but not fatally...⁣

Despite ongoing drought, urban expansion and habitat clearing, commercial and recreational shooting of native wildlife is still a common occurrence. ⁣

Unlike the slaughter line, there isn’t even the facade of welfare measures in place, no restraints, no stunning, no quick death, in fact, no death ensured at all. ⁣
⁣
Injured animals are often left to live with painful wounds from where infections grow and spread, slowly and painfully killing their host. ⁣

This young kangaroo had been shot in the face but survived the ordeal, only to ultimately succumb to the infected and maggot infested wound. Able to eat and drink just barely, it’s unclear how long he was living with this. ⁣

When a good Samaritan arrived to his aid to end his miserable existence, we were finally able see the full extent of the wound he endured. We cannot imagine his suffering.⁣
⁣
Just to clarify- euthanasia was arranged right away, but took a couple hours for someone to arrive as this was in a rural area. And during that wait we documented his plight. For anyone else who may find an animal injured in such a way, please do contact a local fauna rescue (contacts can be found in group Wildlife Rescue Contacts, Australia Wide) to help them even if that’s much needed euthanasia.⁣

More photos of how kangaroo killing is providing a smorgasbord of food for introduced animals. Shooters talk about how foxes follow their trucks and locals have reported foxes distributing kangaroo body parts around after a shoot, even leaving bits in the road of a tourist town!

There’s been a lot of sooking from shooters lately so I would like to take a moment to remember who the real victims are here. These lives that have been brutally ended and their bodies treated as some sort of trophy or sick joke. Their family structures torn apart with every shot. They are the victims, not the sad little people having a whinge because I’m exposing their behaviour.

Kangaroos have been here for millions of years. They deserve to be here. How long have the shooters been on this Country?

I’d also like to take a moment to remind shooters that if they stick their pics on social media they are fair game. Make all the threats you like, you don’t have a leg to stand on. If you did… well that would be a spectacular own goal for you. If this went to court you better believe we would milk it for all it’s worth and many more people both nationally and internationally will see your dirty little secrets. So be my guest.

How many times have advocates been told ‘it’s ethical because there is a Code of Practice’? The Code is a farce, it means NOTHING because there is NO ONE there to enforce it. These shooters do an accuracy test in conditions not representative of those in the field and then they are off by themselves in any weather conditions trying different ammo types and just figuring it out as they go. They are human, they make errors. The fact they did a test and someone wrote a Code which they may or may not have even read does not make kangaroo shooters infallible. We know wounding happens, and it happens a lot, but we will never know the extent of it because there is not a soul out there to witness the truth.

- Presence of dogs
- No gloves or protective equipment
- Ungloved hands inside cavities

- Presence of children (with little/no protective equipment)

Kangaroos are wild animals that naturally harbour many parasites and pathogens (including epidemic blindness and haemorrhagic disease) that are harmless to humans and livestock IF you leave them alone. The mass interference with kangaroo carcasses especially in combination with other highly disease-ridden wild species is a major health hazard. By allowing this bushmeat trade you are asking for an emergent zoonotic disease, and you will be held responsible.
