Kangaroo Industry - Dirty Truth

An ongoing project to expose the Kangaroo industry

A solemn look at the brutality inflicted on joeys (and their families) by professional kangaroo shooters, via the South Australian ‘Drought Support Package’ (i.e. macropod extermination program).

It’s hard to see, but we must keep exposing the truth.

This one is extra tough as it shows the bodies of battered joeys. It is VERY important evidence for those who need it for advocacy, but if you don’t need it, please spare yourself.

These images show the results of the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) ‘Drought Support Package’ (basically a macropod extermination program). The ‘Package’ includes financial incentives for registered ‘Field Harvesters’ (i.e. accredited commercial kangaroo shooters) to kill as many kangaroos as possible. If they get a job where the kangaroos are not going to a chiller (i.e. non-commercial), the shooters must submit a photograph the dead kangaroo spray painted with numbers in order to claim the financial incentive.

Local advocates sourced many images submitted to PIRSA by shooters via FOI. The evidence showed some were clearly not humanely killed (to be shared in due course), and also these horrific pictures of brutalised joeys.

This is crucial evidence, as shooters so rarely share images of joeys, and certainly none this graphic.

Whilst these joeys were killed non-commercially, the shooters are ‘professionals’, and both the commercial and non-commercial Codes of Practice prescribe a blow to the head for furred pouch young. So these images represent the violence of non-commercial eradication programs, and the reality of the commercial kangaroo trade.

⚠️ GRAPHIC. DON’T LIKE IT? DON’T BUY IT. ⚠️

The truth is there if you read what commercial kangaroo shooters have to say about their activities.

The National Code of Practice (such as it is) stipulates:

- ‘Target animals must be clearly visible, stationary’
❌ Not possible when it is dark and raining

- ‘If there is any concern that the shot animal has only been wounded and not killed, then no further animals can be shot until all reasonable efforts have been made to locate and euthanase the wounded animal.’
❌ He lost 6-8 and missed an additional 6-8, all of which may have been wounded, but his irresponsible and unethical shooting means he did not ensure they were dead and not left suffering.

- ‘No more than 3 target kangaroos or wallabies in a group can be shot before the carcasses are checked and retrieved by the harvester.’
❌ If he had been stopping to check and retrieve the animals he shot, he would not have lost so many. If it was genuinely a case that conditions were so bad that he could not find them, he should have done the ethical thing and STOPPED SHOOTING.

As always, the Code is not worth the paper it’s written on, because there is no one in the field to enforce it. Shooters are so unconcerned about the Code that they have no qualms posting violations like this on their business social media accounts.

Boycott kangaroo products.

Violent. Depraved. Totally legal.

This is the kangaroo wildlife trade.

The state and federal governments won’t protect kangaroos whilst they can get away with their greedy exploitation.

They have no voice.

It’s up to you to speak up on their behalf, and use the power of your wallet to boycott kangaroo products.

The National Code of Practice stipulates that pouch joeys should be decapitated or killed via blunt force trauma. It describes how shooters should swing the joeys to smash their heads against something hard, like the tray of their ute.

Shooters rarely talk about what they do to joeys, but sometimes pictures surface. Here are a few recent finds.

Field depots (often retrofitted storage containers) are revolting. Note the lack of gloves, and the congealed blood, mixed species touching, corpses jammed together etc. They can stay like this for two weeks before processing.

Before going into the field depot, the kangaroo bodies are dangled around in the open air with heat, dust and insects after being carried around on the back of a ute all night.

Some of these images are described by the shooter as being for human consumption. Consumers often think this makes it so much better, but you be the judge on whether it looks different.

NB: short necks are a sign that the Kangaroo was not headshot as it is harder to decapitate lower down the neck.

Further to my last post, this was shared in the comments from a fellow kangaroo shooter. Parasites are ever present in the kangaroo trade, along with a high incidence of pathogens like Toxoplasma gondii, Salmonella, E. coli and Coxiella.

Wildlife trade is notoriously dangerous, but Kangaroos are of no harm to humans or any other animal if we just leave them alone.

Not only was this poor kangaroo shot in the neck (in contravention of the ‘Code of Practice’, that isn’t worth the paper it’s written on…), their body shows the grim reality of kangaroo parasites.

Read the comments. See what the shooters REALLY think about this product that is sold to the public as safe and healthy for humans and pets.

Even beyond parasites, kangaroo meat has a high incidence of pathogens like Toxoplasma gondii, Salmonella, E. coli and Coxiella. Worse still, the use of sulphites as a preservative in kangaroo pet meat is also dangerous, and can cause thiamine deficiency leading to brain damage and death in cats and dogs.

A night in the disturbing life of a South Australian professional kangaroo shooter.

**Though repulsive to normal people, for the shooter this is a sanitised promo video, with none of the terrorising, wounding, joey bashing and orphaning, or piles of squirming parasitic worms**

There’s an inquiry underway into kangaroo killing in South Australia. Click here https://animalsaustralia.org/our-work/wildlife/south-australia-kangaroo-inquiry/ for a quick way to send a submission.

Due 18 April.

Another look into field depots (often retrofitted storage containers), i.e. breeding grounds for disease. Note the disgusting conditions, and bodies can stay crammed together like this for two weeks before processing.

Before storage they are dangled around in the open air with heat, dust and insects after being carried around on the back of an open ute. These utes can legally arrive up to two hours after sunrise after being out all night.

Some of these photos are showing off large bucks they shot. They are proud of themselves for killing the big alphas and don’t give a damn that these men are so essential for keeping the mob safe, regulated, and genetically strong. What a disgrace.

Three January images from one WA commercial shooter that tell quite a story…

1. Describing the extreme heat overnight and the many hours that gutted kangaroos were hanging from the back of his open ute, no doubt covered in insects… sound hygienic?

2. Shooting in drizzle. We are constantly told that commercial shooters are ‘humane’ because they have to take an accuracy test. Obviously, ALL shooters should have to take an accuracy test, but even if they do it does not exempt them from human error. We know that they wound and leave kangaroos to suffer a horrendously slow and painful death. Human error is exacerbated when they are shooting in wind, rain and fog.

3. A kangaroo shot in the neck in contravention of the Code of Practice. Also a wound on his arm. This shooter need only cut the head off under the neck wound for his body to be accepted by a processor.

This is the ‘professional’ kangaroo industry…
