Spent the last daylight hours tilling up a new garden bed. We are going to have so many flowers this year. I can’t wait! 😜
🌸✨ Introducing the stunning Festiva Maxima peony! 🌸✨ Despite today’s challenging weather—wind, rain, and even hail—these resilient beauties have made their grand debut.
Festiva Maxima, known for its large, fragrant white blooms with delicate red streaks, has been a garden favorite since it was first introduced in 1851. These peonies symbolize romance and prosperity, and their timeless elegance has graced gardens for generations.
Today, even in the harshest conditions, Festiva Maxima stands tall and vibrant, proving its enduring charm and strength. Here’s to the survivors who bring beauty into our world, no matter the weather! 🌬️🌧️🌨️
The apothecary rose, also known as Rosa gallica officinalis, is a fascinating piece of botanical history. Crusaders in the 12th century, returning from the Middle East, bring back a rose. Not just any rose, but one that’s used in medieval apothecaries for its healing properties. It treated everything from skin issues to digestive problems. Fast forward, and it’s still celebrated for its vibrant pink petals and enchanting fragrance. This particular rose is not just a flower; it came from my mother’s garden where it was happily planted for at least the last 50 years, possibly longer.
Southwest Idaho Dahlia Society needs volunteers on April 20 and April 21 for their annual dahlia sale, I’m going to be there from 1-4 April 20th. Join me!
First blooms from my workshop.
This is what progress looks like. Little by little, day by day, seed by seed, step-by-step, not going to quickly, thinking through the process and planning our grounds and garden for spring. 🌱 ☀️
Exciting news! Our 2023 dahlia seeds are thriving, I know each bloom is going to be a delightful surprise. Only 1000 more to plant 💪 🌱 🌸

The only thing resting in winter is the dirt. We’re so busy here processing dahlia seeds and tubers.
We had a super productive weekend, dug SO MANY tubers, sealed the high tunnel, seed saved, finished a siding project and harvested so much food. There’s so much we are going to be busy the next few weeks processing it all. These two were awfully adorable hanging doors on Saturday—they locked me out 😂
Spent the day flagging and tagging seedlings and preparing tubers for their winter nap. Awfully gorgeous weather hanging out with these two!
Bringing the fall show inside.

Mignonette, so dainty, so smelly.

My most productive grower of the season.
Isn’t she lovely ❤️
Science is validating what gardeners have known for hundreds of years. One of the largest studies to date on gardens and gardening, by the National Institute for Health Research, found that the benefits of gardening were similar to the difference in health between the wealthiest people and the poorest people in the country. It reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, promotes feelings of mastery, accomplishment and competence, higher levels of self-efficacy, self-esteem, and psychological well-being. Here, garden designer Lottie Delamain explores the links between gardening and our mental well-being, and how the natural world can be a refuge: https://www.houseandgarden.co.uk/article/gardening-for-mental-health
Open pollinated, open center, ketchup and mustard organic bloom.
Favorite seedling of the week. It’s apricot orange and the size of a newborn baby’s noggin.
It’s a good day to get lost in the flowers, I love it when it’s overcast.
Found a heart in this ketchup and mustard dahlia. It’s a first bloom and they are always a little strange until they figure out what they want to be when they grow up.
We had so much fun last night soaking up the great weather and making memories with a younger generation. The dragon flies, hummingbirds, and goldfinches made spectacular appearances while we discovered new blooms and made gorgeous arrangements.
Who else can feel fall in the air? The cooler weather is bringing the prettiest dahlias of the season. We have lots of unique open center blooms that you can’t find anywhere else.

Our first dahlias, sunflowers, and zinnias are starting to bloom this week! The first blossoms can be a bit rough as the plants figure themselves out, but it’s all part of the magic. This weekend’s bouquets are going to be absolutely stunning, and we can’t wait to see them in full bloom. Come visit us and pick your own beautiful bouquet! 💐✨ #FlowerFarm #FirstBlooms #Dahlias #Sunflowers #Zinnias #SummerFlowers #BouquetSeason
🌱 Farm to Fork Freshness 🌱 One of the best things about having a garden is enjoying fresh produce straight from the vine. Here’s my favorite way to eat cucumbers almost directly out of the garden: 1. Clean and Slice your garden-fresh cucumbers. 2. Add a couple dashes of amino’s from Braggs. 3. Drizzle with olive oil – raw apple cider vinegar. 4. Sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper to taste. It’s a simple, delicious way to savor the true taste of summer! 🌞🥒✨ #FarmToFork #GardenFresh #HealthyEating #CucumberLovers
Good morning, woke up early to get some fresh blooms in the refrigerator before it gets too crazy outside! #farmchores #BloomsonBloom
Yesterday, I was feeling disheartened in the sweltering heat, thinking our plants were struggling. But, in true farm fashion, I woke up today to find blooms everywhere! 🌸✨ It’s incredible how resilient these flowers are. Just when you think they might not make it, they surprise you with their beauty. Here are some pictures to brighten your day just as they did mine.
We got up at 6 AM and started digging before it got too dang hot. Cleared out all those annoying river rocks that got in the way of the trencher last week. Just one more pit to dig, and then we can start connecting our lines!
We’re getting ready for our U-pick season and couldn’t be more thrilled! Our flower fields are looking gorgeous with a stunning crop of late summer and fall blooms on the way. 🌼🌻 Our irrigation project has had its ups and downs, but we have everything needed to finish it before August! 💧🌿 Click the link for the full update and get ready to pick your own beautiful bouquets soon! 🌷💐 #FlowerFarm #UPickSeason #FarmLife #Blooms #SummerFlowers 👉👉👉https://youtu.be/OWDhR3lT7FY?si=n9nPb7UMNVaDxfs9
We are currently in the process of setting up our new K-Line irrigation system, which includes 7 pods and specialized accessories for towing with our tractor. This system is designed to improve the efficiency of our irrigation efforts and help us maintain a healthy pasture. The K-Line system offers several advantages: • 7 Pods: These pods will ensure even water distribution across our fields, optimizing irrigation. • Towing Accessories: These accessories are designed to integrate seamlessly with our tractor, making the system easy to move and manage. We believe this upgrade will significantly enhance our farming operations by providing consistent and reliable irrigation.
Picked up our K-Line, fittings, and filter earlier today! 🚜💧 It’s going to be a fun weekend getting everything set up. Excited to see the improvements it brings to our irrigation system. Stay tuned for updates! #FarmLife #IrrigationUpgrade #WeekendProject #FlowerFarm
I call these my million-dollar berries because that’s what a farm costs these days. Today marks two years since we started our family farmstead, and I can truly say the farm has changed me for the better. I’m more fit, I eat healthier, and working here makes me feel deeply connected to the world and nature. Life is precious, and I’m grateful for the chance to experience the seasons and all the life forms that thrive on this piece of land, nourished by a little water and the power of the sun. It’s both miraculous and priceless.
Some of our seedlings, actually hundreds of them now as tubers from last year’s noobs, are coming back strong! 💪 I can’t wait to see these creations once again, along with the new Dahlias we created this year from seed. #DahliasforDays #FarmLife #FlowerPower
In just one more month, we are opening the gates for U-pick season! 🌸 I can’t wait to show you all the progress we’ve made over the last few months. If I can get my irrigation system fired up this weekend, we might even have green grass pasture! 🔥🔥🔥 We’re succession planting all of the goods to keep the bouquets fresh each week. 🙌 See you soon at the farm! #UPickSeason #FarmLife #FreshBouquets #IrrigationSuccess
🌹🌿 How to Rescue Your Roses from Blight, Fungus, and Chlorosis 🌿🌹 Roses, they’re like the quintessential symbol of beauty, but even the most beautiful things need care. When blight, fungus, or chlorosis rear their ugly heads, it’s time to take action: 1. Iron Supplements: Think of iron chelate as the secret weapon in your gardening arsenal. It tackles chlorosis head-on, restoring that deep, rich green your roses need to thrive. 2. Earthworm Castings: This isn’t just about fertilizer. It’s about enriching your soil with nature’s own miracle worker. Earthworm castings build a foundation of strength and resilience. 3. Fish Fertilizer: A powerhouse of nutrients, fish fertilizer feeds your roses the way nature intended. It’s about nourishing from the ground up. 4. Neem Oil: When you’re facing fungal infections, neem oil is your go-to. It’s not just a treatment; it’s a preventive measure, a shield against the onslaught of blight and fungus. 5. Proper Pruning: This is about discipline. Regular, precise pruning improves air circulation and keeps your roses healthy. It’s the meticulous attention to detail that sets great gardeners apart. 6. Mulching: Mulch isn’t just a covering. It’s a strategy. It retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and enriches the soil, creating an environment where your roses can flourish. Our inherited beds had no mulch so I’m not surprised to see so many issues with weeds, dry soil and struggling plants. This is a huge priority for our acre to improve the soil and mulch. 7. Good Watering Practices: Water at the base, not overhead. This isn’t just about watering; it’s about preventing disease and promoting deep, robust roots. 8. Baking Soda Spray: A simple, effective solution. Mixing baking soda with water and a touch of liquid soap creates a natural spray that helps fend off fungal threats. Rescuing your roses is possible, you don’t need to start from scratch. #RoseCare #GardenExcellence #Healt
Throwback to last June when Henry was helping dig. This year we’ve doubled the flower beds, widened the paths, and made serious progress on our perennial gardens. Soon we will have a reliable water source for watering. Next year, with all this hard work and patience they’ll be in full bloom. 🌼 Our farm stand is mainly run by teenagers, providing them with valuable training and a great resume builder. More importantly, working with plants, dirt, tools, and machinery is a huge confidence booster. Selling the products they helped grow brings it all full circle. Our kids including nieces and nephews love introducing new friends to the farm and always make sure to let us know if their friends pitch in with the chores or not. Progress, growth, and a little help from friends—that’s what it’s all about. 🌻👩🌾 #FarmChores #FlowerFarm #SustainableLiving #GrowingTogether #PerennialGardens
Well, this was a work weekend! Some of us are actually looking forward to our day jobs just so we can sit and rest after working in 100-degree heat on strenuous farm chores. #progress #munropump #MunroSmartPanel #farmchores #treasurevalleyidaho #bloomsonbloom
🌞 Man, this heat makes for long days! But in between lots of cold water breaks, we are making massive headway on the pump station. Found a salvage piece of structural metal at Pacific Steel that fits perfectly—yay! With a little bit of fabrication work and rust treatment, it will be perfect. 💪🚜 #FarmLife #DIY #Progress #SalvageFind
🌞 What a day! We made it through a scorcher, and yes, it was so warm that the valley saw a few new wildfire starts. But here’s the thing—if you’re out enjoying the beauty of Boise’s foothills or the Treasure Valley, let’s make a pact to keep our air clean and our land safe. Every small action counts! Now, on to something exciting! Our flower farm is buzzing with life, and guess what? Our flower stand will be open this Sunday! 🌸💐 Come share in the joy and color that we’ve been nurturing. Let’s turn this heatwave into a bloom wave! See you soon, and let’s make today remarkable. #BeSafe #BoiseLove #TreasureValley #FlowerPower #WildfireAwareness #CommunityStrong
