Puppies!! A client reached out to me to help her with her TWELVE foster puppies! 😱😍 7 have been adopted but there are 4 gals and 1 boy still available for adoption! Mom is a super sweet, even tempered German shepherd named Chevy Layne. If you're interested in a 13 week old puppy who is ready to wiggle their way into your heart please let me know so I can get you more information and connect you with their foster mom.

Where your dog chooses to be when they're not under command says a lot about your relationship and their preferences. Does your dog constantly follow you around and never leaves your side? Do they wander around but eventually settle near you? Or are they always off in their own little world? These things alone don't dictate the course of your life with your dog but it can give you insight. The first part of solving any problem is gathering information. If you work out what is know you can work towards the unknown becoming known.

Appreciation post for Rocky aka Rickyboy "da old man" Rick-olantern.
Rocky was the kind of dog that was doing okay living in a shelter but didn't show well for adopters. He would parkour off his kennel walls, zoom around the yard, and generally ignore the people in the yard with him. He had a lot of nervous energy to burn and anxiety and curiosity just don't mix. But when I brought him home for sleepovers on cold nights he was a big, sleepy, cuddly couch potato and no matter how much I tried to show potential adopters this side of him they couldn't connect with him. So, I decided to foster him as soon as I was in an apartment that would allow dogs. Lee, my fiance, immediately fell in love with him and refused to put on "adopt me" gear so we decided to make it official and keep him.
7 years later and here he is, loving life, going for walkies, helping me with reactive dogs in lessons, and being a sunbathing tank of sweetness and perfection. I love this old man so much he's taught me more than he will ever know.
I don't know how much time he has left with us now. He's showing signs of aging and slowing down a bit but I aim to give him all the things that make him happy and healthy.

Our interview with Chad Mackin is up! If you don't know who he is he's an incredibly thoughtful and talented trainer who is always trying to improve how he trains and, more importantly, how he thinks about dog training. I always walk away from my conversations with Chad with my head spinning with ideas and as a bonus he's a really cool guy. Go check out this episode and let us know what you think!

Btown had a blast today on his Home Depot outing. I used to ask a lot of him and always expected him to "hold it together no matter what". Just like holding sand, the tighter my control on him the more likely he was to slip through my fingers and react emotionally. I brought his muzzle with me but I never felt the need to use it. So proud of how far we've come together. 💕 Shout out to Cortnie for doing amazing work with scaredy Paco (the other black chi). He was so confident and the most resilient he's ever been!

I'm so proud of Abby! Today we assessed her social skills with stable dogs and my suspicions were correct: she's insecure around unknown dogs so she reacts on leash in an effort to make them leave her alone.
Why is this important? Because too often we assume our dogs are one dimensional and incapable of complex, strategic actions. If we know *why* our dogs do the things they do it allows us to truly tailor a training plan that's fair and compassionate. If a dog is acting out of fear, a correction would be inappropriate. You cannot correct an emotion. You can only correct a behavior. If we squash a dogs ability to communicate (aka growling) we're left with a stifled dog who is significantly more likely to bite.
In Abby's case we need to build trust and prove that we can keep her safe though solid a foundation and clear expectations.

I don't say this often enough: I love my boys. This is B-town. He's a fetching machine and he's taught me so much about dogs, myself, how layered stress affects us, and just how little I actually know even when I think I know it all. Stay tuned for a Rocky appreciation post ♥️
