Home at Last Farm Sanctuary HALFS is a family-run animal refuge and plantstead in North Alabama. All our animals are rescues!

All 39 of these are our rescued babies! We have so much to be thankful for. Current bird count:
🦆 Ducks: 15 domestics, 4 Muscovies
🐓 Chickens: 12
🪿 Geese: 6
🦃 Turkeys: 2

There have been many more who have been adopted out or passed on since 2020. No bird fosters at the moment but that will probably change within a week. 😆🤷‍♀️

ADOPTED!! 🐓 4 more hens to the sweetest couple! Crimson, Coral, Magenta, and Terracotta are already getting quite spoiled at Happy Cow and Friends Hangout, a farm sanctuary northeast of Birmingham! I was so tickled to make new friends! 🌟

Give their pages a follow—the girls now have names from The Plastics in Mean Girls, so what’s not to love? 🤣

A huge thank you as always to the staff at the Greater Huntsville Humane Society who put up with soooo much shenanigans from me adding more farm species to their adoption lists! And another huge thanks to Fabled Farm for alerting us to these hens who needed a new home!

Foster cats Millie and her 5 kittens are doing great! How cute are they?? 😭💕💕

We are treating Millie for mild mastitis, but the kittens are still gaining weight every day. We will soon be offering kitten formula and gradually mixing in kitten wet food.

ADOPTED! 🥰 Today, Ruby, Scarlett, Rose, and Cherry the Rhode Island Reds found a wonderful home through GHHS with a young couple. They said they wanted to add to their flock after falling in love with how much personality birds have.

They also have a rescue pup and originally were looking for a rescue cat on the shelter’s website when they saw the hens and applied! 😉 Woopsies…

Heavens to Betsy, this is not good. Lots of folks buy young rabbits because they are cute, grow tired of them, and then “release” them outside (a death sentence). Huntsville House Rabbits is a fabulous rescue who will go catch these bunnies and their stories are so sad. They are full up on rabbits year round, so a store going from supporting rescues to supporting breeders is a no-no!!

If you are interested in ADOPTING a rescue rabbit rather than purchasing one from a breeder, they can make fabulous pets. They have a ton of personality and can live up to 12 years. Check out Huntsville House Rabbits’ website for all the info you need on rabbit care and supply recommendations, and if you have any questions they are more than willing to help. We have fostered rabbits and would be happy to help as well. Rabbits from reputable rescues come fixed, often vaccinated, and parasite-free, and their adoption fees are often WAY lower than these stores’ prices.

These faces. My sweet mama and I volunteer weekly at Huntsville’s no-kill shelter. It’s a 100 mile round trip. And it’s all because of these faces.

Carmella and Black Beauty are calm mastiff sisters who need a home together, and Jasper is a shy fella who needs a gentle family. All of GHHS’s adoption fees are $25 each through September 10! All adoptable animals are listed at ghhs.org.

So pumped for all these new faces at HALFS!! 🙌🐓 Updates to come as some will be adoptable!

Millie just gave birth to 5 beautiful kittens last night! 😻 Save some drama of her initially choosing the litterbox as the primo L&D room, all is well! She and baby were gently removed and cleaned.

Millie was brought into the shelter pregnant, and a loud shelter is no place for an animal to give birth. Foster homes are a much better option, hence why she is the 3rd pregnant kitty we’ve fostered! It has become our summer tradition to foster a pregnant mama until her kittens are weaned and everyone can be fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and adopted! ❤️✨🐱

Millie the foster mama is growing quite rotund! 🍐 She’s doing great and we can’t wait for bebe kittains 😻

Marceline the barn kitty just really roughs it out here…we love her so much and wish we had more room to adopt even more ferals! 😻 We currently have 3 and they all have their own claimed ~territories~!

If you have property not on a busy road, want to save a life, and perhaps naturally reduce your rodent population, adult feral cats are a treat! Two of ours are special needs, and most feral cats from rescues are fixed, vaccinated, and tested for FIV/FeLV!

After Covid kicked us down and stole our lunch money, my mom and I are finally feeling better!! I am cleared to go back out into the land of the living and Mom will be soon. Adopted hen Jolene here loved having us at home 24/7 because she is what one would call a treat hog. 🤌🐷

“Why is this happening?”, a good friend genuinely asked us. Here’s why and how to help.

WHY
- Warmer weather is always the peak of when dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals have their babies. They can get pregnant at any time of year, but summer is when all the loose animals tend to have babies.
- Countless people in the area do not get their pets fixed. They either keep them outside or assume they will not get out. Lots of folks also assume that babies cannot be made through a chain link fence, or that male dogs cannot make it inside of their fence. Hooo Lawd does nature find a way. That’s what it does best.
- Even if a family does want to spay or neuter their pet, it may be cost prohibitive for them. (See how to help below)
- Countless people do not keep animals housed on their property. No fence + no spaying/neutering = lots and lots of babies, for them or for neighbors. Unneutered males are notorious for roaming and are 80%+ of the dogs you see dead on the side of the road. They were looking for a lady.
- Lots of people, when faced with crisis, dump their animals outside. They assume they will live happily in the woods or be picked up by someone else. When these animals aren’t fixed, it contributes quite a bit to the problem. One of the reasons pitbull-type breeds are everywhere in the south is because they are often the ones loose or dumped, and they are very resilient. So sadly, they often (but certainly not always) withstand neglect, hot weather, cold weather, and disease, and they often have a lot of puppies (we’ve seen up to 17 in one litter).
- Rescues are meant to help animals most in need. *These days, lots of folks who are not necessarily in crisis are overbearing the system meant for crisis.* Families regularly contact rescues to take their pets when they are moving or become pregnant. There certainly can be extenuating circumstances where animals would need to be rehomed, but many families, especially post-Covid, are not willing to put in the work of taking care of a pet for their furry lifetime and sacrificing finding animal-friendly housing or training pets and children to get along peacefully.

HOW TO HELP
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: Nothing will change until stricter laws are enacted. Whether or not you are into government oversight, this has become a crisis and loose animals pose a public health and safety issue, so it has become the government’s problem. Google and leave voicemails for (or email) your mayor, city council, county commissioners, and state legislators that this crisis needs attention. There are no government-supported spay and neuter clinics in Alabama. They are commonplace in other states, particularly the Pacific NW and New England, and they have extra room in their shelters now. Back in Alabama, animal control cannot confiscate animals from a yard or home even with immediate evidence of abuse without a judge signing off on it. It takes a ton of time, paperwork, and an animal-loving judge to actually prosecute someone for animal abuse, and usually it’s a $500 fine and a statement saying they can’t have animals in that county anymore. What do they do? Move counties, hoard again, and start all over. Weak laws make for big problems.
- Obviously adopt pets from shelters or other rescues. If you are worried about an animal having behavioral issues coming out of a shelter where staff didn’t get to know them well, adopt from a rescue where the animal has been in a foster home. Also if you can skip the middleman entirely and take on friends’ or family members’ pets in emergencies, that’s a lifesaver.
- Foster pets if you cannot keep them permanently. Most rescues pay for all food, supplies, and vetting. FYI that mama cats take care of kittens themselves and can be fostered in a bathroom or XL dog crate.
- Get your animals fixed and vaccinated (even indoor cats—God forbid they get out and bitten by an unvaccinated feral). If you need lower cost resources for those, contact the Greater Huntsville Humane Society and they can direct you to free or reduced surgeries and shots.
- Give time or supplies to rescues. Can you answer the phones? Can you take a dog from Huntsville Animal Services home for a weekend and take cute pics and write up a great biography for them to get adopted? Can you drive a few crates of kittens to the vet to get fixed? Can you do lawn care for a day at the shelter? Can you grab an extra item from the shelter’s wishlist when you see it on sale next time you’re at the grocery store? Is your child an animal lover and could they collect supplies for their summer birthday party instead of presents?
- Just little things make a big difference to rescuers. A handwritten card just telling them you appreciate them working hard in the community will make them cry, guaranteed. Sharing, liking, and commenting on posts online of adoptable animals is always helpful too.

Humans domesticated dogs and cats to help them and be their companions. Let’s be good stewards to their descendants.

Officials with Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) say they are dealing with severe overcrowding that could cause health problems for animals in its shelter and they are seeking your help.

All 3 of our chinchilla fosters are adopted and in the most amazing homes! They will definitely be spoiled!

The females Mouse (mama) and Bumper (baby) are living it up with my sister-in-law and family, and Tubs is now a Tennessean with the most wonderful young couple who did a ton of research. When they drove down to Huntsville to adopt him, they showed me pictures of his already decked-out cage. He’ll be a happy boy 🥹💕

Goodbye for now, sweet Rosie. ❤️🌈 Our chicken truck survivor passed away yesterday.

Back in July 2022, friends and I found Rosie in the road. She had fallen out of a chicken truck bound for the slaughterhouse. At 8 weeks old, she was still peeping like a chick (because she was still a baby) and had no idea what the outside world, including grass, looked like. She had already had part of her beak cut off as a baby (which feels like removing the tip of your finger) and had been bred to grow insanely large at an insane rate. Instead of being sent off to become meat, she quickly made buddies on our farm and her quirky personality melted our hearts. She would be the last out of the coop every morning because she loved to take in the view standing in the elevated entrance. She loved strawberry tops, mealworms, and blueberries. She was a dust bath queen, and her neck would stick straight up in excitement when we brought her cooked eggs. We wish she could have lived for longer, but she already lived 13 times longer than billions of her counterparts. 💔 We cannot wait for the next Cornish Cross to come our way so we can hopefully spoil them in memory of sweet Rosie. 🌹
