Facebook won’t let me add the before video (I’ll try in the comments) but this video was taken after 20 minutes of engagement work with a dog that has been a habitually terrible leash puller!

Anyone can do it! Let us instruct you how!

Our boy Grizzly came to us for a long weekend to work on proofing his ability to behave around crowds! He passed with flying colors. This is a quick video of him walking up to a very busy farmers market!

A couple slices of rye bread doesn’t constitute a Rueben sandwich. It’s the corned beef, sauerkraut, melted Swiss, and the big shabang - Russian dressing, that make the WHOLE sandwich. All of those individual elements may taste undesirable on their own, but when stacked together, create one hell of a sandwich.

What the heck does a Rueben have to do with owning a dog...

Well, if you don’t think that allowing your dog to blast through Thresholds ahead of you, or bulldoze his way out of his crate, or tow you down the street, or pummel every guest he excitedly sees, has anything to do with him now exploding at the sight of a strange dog, human, or even bird...

You’re wrong.

Most dogs start expressing their distress in very SMALL ways that go ignored, until the behavior STACKS and manifests into something intolerable, or even dangerous.

All of our seemingly insignificant, and easy to ignore interactions with your dog stack to create the SH*T-sandwich that is his hyper-arousal, reactivity, over-protectiveness, resource guarding, or fence fighting.

Dangerous/unhealthy behavior is a symptom of a boundary-less lifestyle.

Neglecting to address the smaller offenses, inevitably guarantees a deepening and intensification of rude, disrespectful behavior. Instead allowing our dog to create his own RECIPE for disaster, examine all of those small moments in your daily interactions to create the healthy recipe of your dreams.

The smaller offenses that go overlooked become gateways to big ones that can’t be.

We use tools to REINFORCE behaviors that the dog already knows/understands! Not for the actual training. There is a difference!

As a professional dog trainer and as a trainer I can tell you that it makes even trainers who use adverse methods skin crawl when they hear people say “It’s a great tool if you use it correctly.”

Why? You ask…..

90% of people who use these tools do not know how to properly fit them or even properly put them on. This is the most basic step in using any training tool.

Now, I want them to convince me that they’re using a prong collar correctly when it isn’t even on your dog correctly.

It is really hard to permanently scar a dog mentally, create major behavior problems, or create anxious behavior with positive training methods.

I would say 85-90 percent of collars I see while out in public are improperly fit. How do they know how to properly use it if they can’t fit it on their dog? Correct timing that can often takes years to master and tools like prong collars, gentle leaders, and e-collars must be used correctly to be effective.

To correctly use this type of training tool one must have perfect timing, a strong understanding of training methods, and a wonderful ability to read a dog once they have learned all this seldom do they need these types of Correction devices.

I often find that when somebody is looking at buying these types of tools and you ask them why they need it their answer is often well, my dog pulls really bad on walks and I was hoping it would help, or my dog lunges at other dogs and I was hoping it would help.

Here is the truth. When I ask these people who want their dogs to walk well on leash, “If you say "heel" in the house holding something she really wants, does your dog come to your left side and sit?” they often answer, “no”.

If you answered “no”, my question for you is why would you punish a dog for not preforming a behavior you haven’t taught him? If he cannot perform a heel in the house without distraction why would you punish him for not being able to do it outside on a walk with the presence of distraction like squirrels and other dogs? This doesn’t sound very fair to me.

No tool should ever replace good dog training, especially not one that can have adverse side effects.

"He's afraid of ____, so he must have been abused by _____ or with _____."

In sheltering and rescues, a lot of dogs come into care with unknown histories. Many of these dogs present with specific or generalized fear and anxiety.

It can be easy - so, SO easy - to attach a story to their behavior.

In fact, it's becoming increasingly common for people to adopt dogs BECAUSE of their story. The more tragic, the more desirable. 🐕

The problem with this is that it tends to freeze dogs into their past behavior. Their owner becomes so attached to the story, so emotionally invested, that they themselves cannot move past it. When the owner gets stuck, so does the dog. Sometimes resulting in the owner never getting proper help for the dog or over feeding it to the point of extreme obesity.

Then the story becomes an excuse.

He's aggressive to the postman because one must have abused by a man.

He's leash reactive to other dogs because he was a 'bait dog'.
He runs from us when we grab the fly swat because someone has hit him with it.

In most cases, these behaviors are caused from a lack of exposure in the critical period of "socialization". Their inexperience and lack of exposure can present itself as fear, anxiety, stress and aggression; mechanisms they develop over time to cope.

He's afraid of men? Make men equal good things.

He runs from the fly swatter. Pick the fly swatter and throw the dog a handful of steak a few times or turn it into a game of fetch.
See what happens. 🥩

When we adopt a dog, we're making a commitment to BETTER their life.

Holding on to their past is doing the opposite.

Show them they're in a better place by overcoming their problems, not nurturing them.

Ma*****na 💨 ⁣

Sooooo your dog ate w**d.⁣

First, let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. Your vet does 👏🏼 not 👏🏼care.⁣

Second. We ALWAYS know. 😏⁣

There is no sense in denying it. Don’t make up some du***ss story, and stop blaming your neighbors. It’s a whole lot easier and faster to just be upfront about what is going on.⁣

Ma*****na toxicity is extremely common in household pets these days. A tiny amount can cause a whole host of symptoms, and here are the most common:⁣

🌱 Unable to stand/walk in a straight line⁣
🌱 Dribbling urine/having accidents⁣
🌱 Hyperreflexive around the head (flinching HARD when a hand comes toward their face)⁣
🌱 Nausea/drooling/vomiting⁣
🌱 Low heart rate/body temperature⁣
🌱 Overall appearing like they’re high as a kite⁣

Luckily life threatening ma*****na toxicity is rare, and the majority of pets who ingest THC bounce back quickly with a night of hospitalization and fluids, along with lots of treats, a dark room, and some Pink Floyd. 😉⁣

In large amounts ma*****na can cause coma and even death, so seeking veterinary attention is always recommended. Also, I tell owners constantly that if your pet is exhibiting these symptoms and it’s NOT ma*****na, then I’m going to be really worried. So let’s all be honest here, and save yourself some money digging for a diagnosis when we already know what’s going on.⁣

Oh and parents, if you bring your teenager with you to the appointment and your vet asks you about ma*****na? Please take a moment to excuse yourself to the restroom so we can appropriately grill the 17 year old smirking in the corner. You may not know there’s w**d in your house, but I guarantee sweet little Ryan does. 🙃
