"Bar fights."

Buffy learning how to navigate the the parking lot. ❤️ I want her to be safe. I want her to be polite around people and dogs. I want her to come when called. I want her to be easy to be around. I want her to not be "too much." All that takes practice. It takes trusting her ability to navigate new and scary situations. It takes correcting overreactions, supporting her and rewarding behaviors I like. People are nervous around her off lead and watch her. They pick up her long line or go after her around the corner. People aren't used to a dog off lead, especially a young dog and a part of me wants to desensitize people to roaming dogs. I'm exhausted by handcuffed dogs and will never have one and maybe seeing it will help someone who wants that too. I don't want Buffy to know how to stop on lead. I want her to know how to BE off lead. I want her to be as free as possible. That takes practice and thank you to our amazing clients who help us!

Happy Tuesday!

Making sure Miss Buffy can spend her life off lead. I let her drag a long line and practice paying attention to where I am. I switch direction loudly, I reward her when she looks at me or stays near me. She's bred to do this behavior. Her entire genetic make up demands that she is proficient at knowing where I am and where I'm going and I don't want to stop her from exercising that by putting a leash on her. I don't want to hold her back or teach her that the thing keeping her near me is nylon and not us enjoying walking together and still being safe. I don't want to spend our time together worried she'll run off or "get loose." I don't want to have to always call her back to me. I want us to be as free as we can be and have a big life together and I don't want her handcuffed during it. ❤️

Perfect.❤️ Buffy connecting the scent with a food reward. Her focusing on the tin is the start and will eventually get elongated and become her alert to me that she has found a specific scent. Next we move the tin away from me in sight and then out of sight. Wish us luck! ❤️

Day 1 of scent work with Miss Buffy. Introduced an AKC test scent and paired it with a little treat. If she looked at the tin, investigated it or just got close to it I gave her a treat. I want her to start to associate finding the scent with a reward. To begin I'm using food but I'll switch to a toy later. In the beginning there's a lot of cross contamination and food excitement confusion so it's a bit sloppy and the toy is more refined. I also screwed up and used a verbal marker. We don't do that because the dog then looks at the handler or the treat pouch once they hear the marker rather than the scent. I forgot, it's been years. Tonight I'll switch to a box so I can remove myself and the marker. We all screw up dog training. Most of us are lousy teachers, trying to teach in a foreign language and muscle memory can be a bitch to work around. Dog's fill in or expertise gaps with so much precision it makes us look like we trained them rather than they learned in spite of our clumsy interference. I don't know if we'll do anything proffessional with scent training, maybe, I think she will be great at it and I'm interested in partnering with her for conservation work. We'll see. If not we'll just play hide and seek like I did with my first hound. If you're interested in learning about hobby scent work and working your own dog, let us know.
