Miss Buffy working recall. I've had a couple questions since I've started posting her training/raising vids. I should start doing voice over but until then you'll have to read.
#1 No I don't bowl feed for about the first 6 months. She eats with me while we train and play throughout the day.
#2 No I don't really use any "commands" until she starts to get the hang of the game and is presenting behaviors consistently. She doesn't know any words yet and all I'm trying to do is get her attention and thats easy with little noises. The words I do say are muscle memeory.
#3 No I don't use a lead until about 9 months unless I'm training any kind of advanced heel and position work.
#4 Recall means come when called. I don't "train" recall, I condition it. Buffy will never remember a time she didn't run to me, it will become part of her genetic make up just like my others. The way that happens is enough repetitions that she doesn't know any other way and it becomes hardwired. We will practice in this small space for a while and then on the training floor and back lot and eventually the parking lot and hiking trails. I will increase the difficulty and distractions at a pace I know she will not be able fail with and I'll ensure success with a long line. Recall 101

Confidence building breakfast with Buffy. Why? A couple reasons. First and foremost I want her to be fearless. Fearful, insecure dogs have very small worlds and live limited lives. Insecure dogs lunge and bark at people and dogs. They over react to stimulation in vehicles or shut down in new places. They whine and are destructive. They can't be trusted to stay or recall because they might get too overwhelmed. Most of all insecure dogs bite people. I want Buffy to not worry about people because she can trust her abilities to handle situations. Dogs build confidence in very physical ways. Asking her to move onto or over scary things and she is successful builds up her trust in herself. Each new scary thing she conquers will create a well balanced, secure dog. I want Buffy's world to large and I want her to be comfortable in her own fur and not have to deal with thr mental load of fear and insecurity. Furda is free in so many ways because she did drills just like this when she was a pup.

Everyone meet Miss Buffy Summers. This is a dynamic dog. Some of what I thought we were going to do has needed to shift a bit because she has got some big feelings and is vocal about them. Part of raising a puppy is knowing that youre not. Youre raising a dog that will have to live in a home and be part of a community. This girl especially. She's 13 lbs now but soon she'll be 87lbs with a full set of teeth designed to rip flesh from bone and we need everyone to know some rules. I set a schedule for her which is about 3 hours up and 3 hours down. A little bit of exposing her slowly to the kennel and a few dogs but mostly we've been just playing and getting to know eachother. Dogs are built to evaluate situations, environments and patterns very quickly which means they take in a ton of information all at once. That can be overwhelming so I limited what she had to be exposed to immediately. We call it the decompression phase and it shouldn't be too hectic. I want her to develop into a confident, well rounded, easy to be around dog so I'm making sure she can go at a good pace for her not for me or my expectations or wants. I'm hand feeding because when we start obedience down the road I want her to have some of the building blocks of following a lure in place. She's tough and playful and needs some help getting to settle and coming down from play so she's thriving with more structure than some of my other pups have needed. A lot more quiet time for her which is an adjustment and gives me a chance to recharge before she's up and ready to take on the world again. She's a force.
