Specialty care in veterinary medicine is just as important as it is in human medicine. Unfortunately, for many reasons the referral process can be cumbersome or even non-existent, which places you and your pet in a difficult, costly, and time-consuming situation. By working together, family veterinarians and veterinary specialists can help you decide if AND when it may be best to take the trip to the specialist, establish accurate expectations for your visit, and help you along in the process.

We at Vet Specialists on Demand are here to do just that – work alongside your veterinarian to determine if referral is the next best step, and if not, help provide specialty-level care for your pet right from the comfort of your family vet clinic. Ask your veterinarian about specialty consultation with Vet Specialists on Demand today and let’s work together to get your pet better faster!

Is this a telescopic photograph of one of the moons in our solar system? Or perhaps a shot of a steep cliff with little plants emerging from the rocky soil? For those of you that suspected the abdomen of a dog, you are correct! This is a particularly severe case of comedones, or black heads, on the belly of a dog with hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s Disease).

Cushing’s Disease is a metabolic condition that can present clinically in many different ways, sometimes only with dermatological (skin) signs. In this case, only the comedones were present, so it was elected to team up with a VSOD dermatology specialist. The collaboration led to testing and successful diagnosis of Cushing’s Disease, and the little dog was able to be started on a helpful treatment right away. In only a few short months, his skin had dramatically improved, and the pet parent no longer had to worry about popping a handful of blackheads when picking him up (😬). Even better yet, the more severe clinical signs of Cushing’s Disease were able to be prevented. Way to go team!

Yesterday VSOD ophthalmologists responded to a call about a rare albino American alligator with an abnormal eye. It sure was abnormal! Part of his iris was found to be stuck to the back of his cornea (the dark spots in each side of his normal vertical slit pupil). But fortunately, the abnormalities were developmental (present since birth) and were not causing the big fella any discomfort or vision problems. We just gave him some words of encouragement to stay in the shade 🙂

This 9-year-old Labrador had a painful corneal ulcer that wouldn't heal for over 6 weeks!

The primary veterinarian scheduled a short call with a VSOD ophthalmologist to discuss additional options, and this image was shared. The ophthalmologist noted the rim of cloudiness surrounding the positively stained ulcer (the green seen here), and suggested that it was corneal edema caused by loose edges of surface epithelium, indicating that it is an indolent ulcer. Instruction on how to safely debride and treat the ulcer helped heal this eye within 7 days!

This is one of the most common conditions seen by in a veterinary clinic, and something that can often be resolve by collaboration with a specialist - thanks to a quick collaboration with VSOD, this pup and his parents saved over $700 and spared an extra trip to an ophthalmologist!

This young Golden Doodle had a small brown dot appear on his left eye about 1.5 years ago.

It grew slowly and eventually become very large as shown. The primary veterinarian did a quick virtual consult with a VSOD ophthalmologist, and it was strongly recommended that dog should be seen by an ophthalmologist in person.

That's where the mass (a limbal melanocytoma) was removed by a very big, risky, and heroic surgery.

This is a great example of the value of EARLY collaboration - had the consult with an ophthalmologist happened earlier, when the mass was first noted, a giant, risky, and expensive surgery could have been avoided. Fortunately, all ended well and he had a great outcome in the end.

Best luck little buddy!
