A nice example of properly addressing heels on a goat during a hoof trim. Not to mention wicked speed!

Lots of both this year!

Equine endocrine disorders such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) feature some striking clinical similarities, most notably a predisposition to the development of chronic laminitis. However, the underlying disease biology is quite different in each case.

The graphic below describes some key differences to be aware of between the two diseases.

If you have questions or concerns about your horse in regard to EMS or PPID, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate them.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

The cost of hay needs is something very important to consider. Appropriate dental care for your horses, especially as they age, is vital to allow them to even be able to digest the hay you are spending your hard earned money on. A horse with poor dentition may look very skinny even on free choice lower nutrient hay. FYI appropriate dental care does NOT mean hand floats without a speculum; a proper sedated oral exam is required.

University of Minnesota extension always has the best infographics!

There is obviously a lot of variability between horses, but this is a really good baseline to start from, and can help plan for purchase quantity and budget.

Humans, livestock and property are all well. Thankful for some hard working generous neighbors. Prayers for helping hands and open hearts for everyone else in our community and beyond.

⛈️ We will be closed today and tomorrow Oct 8th and 9th. As safety permits, we will remain open to see emergencies

⛈️ During this state of emergency we will do our best to see non-client emergencies within our practice area during daytime hours only.

💟 Please choose kindness and grace during this time of heightened stress. Dr. Menacho is a solo veterinarian with no support staff available for after hour emergencies and will do her best to help your animals.

What a veterinarian with livestock does to prepare for the storm.

🦄 Be aware of my horse’s metabolic status. Halo (Dr. Menacho’s 23 yr old mare) has Equine Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance. Access to grass 24/7 raises her insulin, so she will be monitored for laminitis and have her insulin re-tested after the storm.

🐠 Have good relationships with our neighbors in the event trees fall on fences. Remove all halters and braid cattle tags with contact information into mane.

💉 Move vaccines and cold items to our main fridge. Having banamine and some basic wound care items is necessary in this situation!

🌴 Move all vehicles away from trees.

🐐 Keep everyone turned out! Breakdown panels we use as feeding slips in the pastures to prevent them becoming projectiles. Clean up kid’s toys and other random items around the farm.

💦 Be stocked on food and water for 1-2 weeks. Fill up extra water troughs. Keep in mind access to ponds increases the risk of hoof problems and other diseases (liver flukes, pythium, etc.) Also, sudden increased access to hay may increase the risk of impaction colic.

🧂 Electrolytes and an unmolassed beet pulp mash are already a part of our daily routine. If not, 1.5 tablespoons of plain white table salt can be used over the next few weeks as the weather changes and stress may lower water consumption. I love Purina RepleniMash as an alternative to a beet pulp mash.

🪱 Be up to date on deworming, fecals, dental health, vaccines, and other preventive care items. Y’ALL this is why these items are SO IMPORTANT. An animal can handle a hurricane much easier if their body is not already under the stress of parasites, malnutrition from poor dentition, unmanaged Cushing’s Disease, etc.

👯‍♀️ Reach out to other local large animal veterinarians. We know this job is hard, and we are stronger together.

Personal question regarding childcare: we are looking for other options for our 2.5 and 3.5 year old for part time childcare. Traditional daycare options are just not a good fit. I know many of our clients are like minded and homeschool. Please let me know if you know of any moms looking for part-time work, or who already provide childcare.

We tried to take cute pictures with our favorite patient of the day and this is the best we got! This little guy had his eyelids sutured together to help heal his severely damaged eye. We are hoping the procedure along with other treatments provided will save the eye.

A passion for large animal medicine

Dr. Katelyn is originally from Central Florida, where she grew up showing horses. Her passion for large animal medicine, specifically beef cattle production, grew while in college at the University of Florida. After graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Katelyn joined a mixed animal practice in rural Kansas. There she focused on beef cattle and horse medicine. A desire to move back closer to home brought Dr. Katelyn to Sorrento, FL where an idea grew to provide emergency services to large animals in the surrounding area. The goal of Oak Hammock is to support local veterinarians and help clients when emergencies happen. Dr. Katelyn also works full time at a local small animal emergency clinic. Her passion is on the farm, helping people stay connected to agriculture and working with livestock, and her dreams are for this business to be an intersection between providing a service to clients and doing what she loves. Outside of work, Dr. Katelyn enjoys spending time with her husband, English Pointer, and Half-Arabian mare.
