As much as we like taking our dogs for a swim on a weekend, it's important to remember puppies need to be introduced to water only between 2-5 months. 🌊
It is vital that they are introduced slowly to the water.
If you want your dog to swim like a pro then patience and a little encouragement will go a long way in making it happen!
Do you know how big Bouvs really get?
Some of these cuddly bears can stand as tall as you, just look!

Did you know that puppies are born without teeth?
You might think of puppies chewing up everything around the house, but they are actually toothless until they’re about four weeks old.
It's important to ensure that they don't eat anything hard and solid until then.

What are your weekend plans like?
Here's one of our dogs, Rogue during one of his walks!
Maybe we'll go on another walk this weekend!
It can be very distressing when your dog won’t eat. There are a variety of reasons for loss of appetite in dogs.
If you’re concerned because your dog isn’t eating as much as the guidelines state on the food you purchase, remember that these are only averages.
Because loss of appetite in dogs can indicate illness, it is important to seek veterinary care if you do notice changes in your dog’s eating habits, however. It is especially important to respond promptly to a refusal to eat in dogs that usually eat well.
Pay attention to your pups!
Happy National Puppy Day! 🐾

As National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month continues, it's important to know what to do if you suspect your dog has ingested anything poisonous. 🐕🦺
Pet poisonings are some of the most widespread emergencies that vets see. If you have reason to believe that your dog or pup has ingested anything poisonous, seek professional help right away.
If your dog vomits, bring the sample of his vomit to your vet. More importantly, in case you’ve found the substance that the dog ingested, take it to your veterinarian's office as soon as possible. Having this sample will considerably shorten the time your vet will need to make a diagnosis.
The Bouvier is often compared to a bear, and it's not just because of its shaggy hair or wild, playful demeanour!🐕🦺 🐻
These dogs can grow to be really big! Bouviers are one of the largest dog breeds. They can grow up to around 27 inches tall and can weigh over 110 pounds.
These loyal companions were bred largely to be hard workers, but they're just as soft and cuddly too!
As we continue National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month, it's important to be able to spot the signs of possible poisoning in your dogs.🐕🦺
Signs of poisoning can range tremendously based on the underlying poison. If you think your dog has been poisoned, call your vet or a pet poison resource immediately for assistance!
When it comes to poisoning, the sooner you treat your dog, the better the outcome.
Here are some common signs of pet poisoning:
- Gastrointestinal signs
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Drooling/hypersalivating
- Nausea
- Weakness or lethargy
- Vomiting or Coughing of blood
Anyone going for a swim soon? 🐕🦺🏊🏽♂️
If you're heading to the beach, don't forget your leashes, toys and lots of treats!
Having your dog inside is great, but it's important to remember that your dogs need to be outside sometimes too! 🐕🦺
Dogs thrive on exercise, fresh air and sunlight.
Ensure that your dogs get enough physical activity. Take them on outings, let them socialize with other dogs and people.
Don't keep your dogs cooped up!
You might think you have a fair idea of what's poisonous to your dogs, but you'd be surprised about what you may not know! 👇🏽
If we missed any, share with us in the comments below!
Here are some common household toxins to keep in mind:
- Over-the-counter and prescription medications.
- Food: Especially grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and cherries
- Chocolate: Contains caffeine and a chemical called theobromine, which dogs cannot metabolize. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.
- Xylitol: Sweetener found in sugar-free and other foods, including some peanut butters
- Rodenticides: Either in their pure form or from eating a poisoned rodent
- Cleaners and chemicals: Including bathroom, kitchen, window, and car cleaners, antifreeze, paint thinner, pool and hot tub products, etc.
- Some flowers and plants: Especially deadly to dogs are all forms of lilies, tulips and daffodils
- Mushrooms and berries: Many are non-toxic, but those that are can be very harmful, so it’s better to assume the worst and avoid them altogether.
It's always important to remember that Bouviers are a very active breed!
Bouviers can spend an hour or two alone, but much beyond that and they'll resort to destructive behaviours, such as barking, and chewing.
Too much time alone also means they aren't getting the exercise they need, which can lead to poor manners, chasing, and leash pulling.
When you do leave your Bouvier alone for short stretches of time, it is helpful to set them up in a cozy dog crate with a few favourite toys to keep them occupied.
March is National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month. 🐾
It’s an important time to learn about some crucial ways to ensure our dogs have safe and happy lives. So over the course of this month, we will talk about ways to keep them safe from accidental poisoning.
Stay tuned for all the info!
Here's some Bouv knowledge for ya! 💬
Bouviers were almost lost during World War I when many were enlisted to serve as messenger and ambulance dogs.
Today, all Bouviers are descended from the few dogs that survived the battlefields and was brought to the US by European expatriates.
Having proved their mettle in war, people began using the capable and courageous Bouvier for police K-9 units, as well as search and rescue, and guide work.
The more you know!
The Bouvier Des Flandres is a truly intelligent breed that learns quickly and never forgets! 🦮
Training and socializing your Bouvier gets your relationship off on the right foot. Train with fairness, consistency and start as soon as possible.
And remember, most dogs react more quickly to praise than to corrections!
Our dogs love rolling around outdoors, and that's why its important to keep their grooming and cleanliness up to par.
Bathing, blow drying and brushing your Bouv is important as their long, shaggy hair can easily become dirty and matted. This can cause skin infections, itching and just pure discomfort for your dog.
Take to your vet about the right grooming products for your Bouv and keep them clean and tidy!
The same way we keep active and fit, is the same way our dogs need their exercise! 🏃🏽♂️
As a pet parent, you are your dog’s main motivator–to get fit and stay healthy. Taking your dog for a walk around the block is a great start, but for Bouviers who are workers by nature, they are larger and get bored quickly. This means they have higher exercise needs and crave more rigorous activity. Exercising twice a day for up to two hours total is beneficial.
PS. Research suggests people who exercise with their dogs are more likely to stick to a fitness program. The key is finding activities you both enjoy!

The Bouvier Des Flandres is one of the most intelligent dog breeds and responds pretty well to being trained.🐕🦺 Because these dogs do tend to think independently, using consistency and positive reinforcement training makes way for the best results. Here's a Bouv showing off all the tricks they know! #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
Did you know that the Bouvier Des Flandres prefers average to cold weather conditions?❄️ Bred in Belgium, where temperatures can get as cold as 0°C, Bouviers can adapt well to cold weather conditions. However, with proper grooming and ample water supply, they also have no problems living in tropical climates like ours! #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
Teaching your dog to "stay" is important. Its a useful command when you’re taking them in a walk or even when they’re around unfamiliar people or other animals. 🐶 1. Ask your dog to sit (check out our last post for the Sit Command tips) 2. Reward them after they sit for a few seconds 3. Repeat but increase the time between commanding them to sit and giving them the treat 4. After getting your dog accustomed to waiting for their treat after sitting, introduce to command “Stay”, and after making them stay for a while, reward them with a treat. Repeat until they understand the command “Stay”. 5. Introduce a release word. After getting your dog accustomed to sitting and staying, give your release command and toss a treat so your pup must get up to retrieve them. A release command might be a hand signal—such as lifting your hand up—or the words “OK” or “Go.” Try it at home! Send us your videos if you training your dogs to Sit and Stay! #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
Here's a fun fact about the Bouvier Des Flandres! 🐕🦺 The breed has a very strong protective instinct which is why they make a great watchdog as well as a guard dog. They are not an aggressive unless they feel that their family is threatened. However, sometimes their intimidating looks are enough to deter any intruders. Would you consider getting yourself a Bouv? They make a great companion and an even better protector! #bouvierTT #VonHausHelden
Teaching your dog to "roll over" is a cute and fun trick that is fairly easy to accomplish! 🐶 Before you start, your dog should already be able to sit and lie down on command. Start training your dog to roll over by giving it the "down" command. Hold a treat by their nose, and then toward their shoulder. Your dog should turn their head to follow the treat. Then continue to pull the treat around the dog's shoulder so they will have to lie down on their side to follow it. Continue holding the treat close to your dog's nose, and pull it all the way around to the other side, so they have to roll all the way over to follow it. If it completes the full roll, praise the dog and provide a treat! Try this trick and let us know how it goes! #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
If your dog has bad breath, it could be a sign of canine dental disease. 🐕🦺🦷 And, notably, even if your dog has stinky breath you should never give them breath mints that are meant for humans because they often include the sweetener xylitol, which is toxic to animals. The simplest way to prevent bad dog breath is to brush your dog's teeth on a regular basis. Teeth brushing reduces plaque and promotes better oral hygiene, much as it does in humans, and with a little training, most dogs learn to enjoy having their teeth brushed. There's even specially formulated dog toothpaste! #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
CHOCOLATE IS TOXIC TO DOGS! 🍫 While rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine which dogs are unable to metabolize effectively. If your dog eats chocolate, you should monitor them closely and seek veterinary attention if they show any symptoms, or if they are very young, pregnant or have other health concerns. #BouvierTT #VonHausHelden
