Now that the FDA is removing the black box warnings about HRT it will only be a matter of time before other countries, including the UK, follow suit. At last! A big thank you to all those involved who have campaigned long and hard for this moment.

Now I am in my sixties I find that if I don’t get enough sleep my brain becomes foggy and I get that overwhelmed feeling of not being on top of my game. How about you? Did you know that women get cardiovascular disease too? It's not just men that have heart attacks. Menopause increases women's cardiovascular disease risk due to declining estrogen, which is a heart-protective hormone. This period is linked to negative changes, such as increased LDL ("bad") cholesterol, decreased HDL ("good") cholesterol, and a higher tendency for weight gain and fat redistribution. Have a look at this video for more information and go to my YouTube channel for more helpful videos on being a menopausal Dog Pro.

Want to know how to work in this industry for as long as you want and earn more money. It’s not easy or quick, but neither is training a dog or building a business. It’s a slow, gritty, dive in and stay in kind of thing. As we age we realise that there are rarely any quick fixes in life. Want that great house? You normally have to work damn hard to get it! Want to take time off to travel - it can be done but boy, do most people have to work for it! Want to work with dogs for as long as you want, despite being older and menopausal? Yes - you can! Here are my top ten tips. They’re in my book, explained in detail, and it’s what I live by. I AM the book. I am still working with dogs at an enjoyable level in my sixties and feeling fit, strong and well. You can too!

From no exercise to feeling fit and energetic?

As with dog training, for example, we can't expect to make this quantum leap of being fit and healthy in a week! It takes time to build muscle and lots of effort on our part, just as it takes time and effort to raise a puppy into a well behaved adult dog.

However, if you decide that it's time for you to do more exercise the first thing to do is to put the days and times in your diary and keep to them - as if your life depends on it - which one day it probably will! That in itself takes time to figure out, but when you do, and you start feeling the benefit of lifting weights or running or yoga you may well wonder why you didn't start earlier.

As my own Personal Trainer says "it's never too late to lift a weight". Go for it..

I have lots of hints and tips about exercise in my book Menopause and the Dog Professional. 👉 Grab your copy here: https://amzn.to/3CWEHeZ

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in like a slow walk on a long lead — until one day you realize you’re the one who needs training in rest and recovery.

Below is an extract from my book Menopause and the Dog Professional. It’s my passion project and took nearly 2 years of research and writing to get it published. I felt that after 40 years in an industry that’s given me a good income and supported me when times were tough, I wanted to give something back.

Why Eating Well in Midlife Matters More Than Ever 🍎✨

By Menopause and the Dog Professional.

Midlife can feel like a juggling act — running your business, caring for dogs, and managing the changes that come with menopause. But one thing that can make all the difference during this time? What’s on your plate.

As hormones shift, our bodies need a little extra care and attention. Eating well isn’t about restriction — it’s about nourishing yourself so you have the energy, focus, and resilience to thrive (both in and out of your work with dogs!). I talk a lot about this in my book.

Here’s why healthy eating matters so much in midlife:

🥦 Balance those hormones – Foods rich in fibre, phytoestrogens (like flaxseeds and soy), and healthy fats can help ease menopausal symptoms and support hormone health. Obviously not as much as being on HRT but if you don’t want to or can’t go on HRT then what you eat becomes even more important.

💪 Support your strength – Protein and calcium are key for maintaining muscle and bone health — essential when you’re lifting, walking, or training dogs all day.

🧠 Boost mood and focus – Omega-3s, B vitamins, and complex carbs can help regulate mood and energy, keeping you sharp and steady through the ups and downs.

🔥 Tame inflammation and fatigue – Minimising processed foods and adding colourful fruits, veggies, and whole grains can help you feel lighter, clearer, and more energised.

Midlife is not about slowing down — it’s about fuelling yourself for the next amazing chapter.
So, take a moment to pause, plate up something nourishing, and remind yourself: you deserve to feel good, inside and out. 💜

I hope this video helps you. I am talking about the aches and pains we have as we get older. But... is it age that's doing it or is it the lack of oestradiol in our system? Maybe it's a bit of both. Many Dog Pros feel achy and in pain lots of the time. So what can you do about it? As it turns out there is quite a bit you can do to help yourself feel better and, therefore, allowing you to continue working with dogs for as long as you want and need to.
