This time of year can be really stressful for Dog Professionals, particularly for Dog Groomers. I owned a very busy salon for nearly 20 years so I have a deep understanding of how tiring it can be trying to fit every dog on the books into 3 weeks of time. I had a team of staff and we used to do three shifts starting at 8.30 am, 1 pm and 5 pm. Sometimes we didn’t get home until gone 11 pm. It’s hard physically on our bodies and mentally exhausting as we keep our patience and kindness in check even when some dogs are trying to bite us. When we hit peri-menopause things can get even harder. I feel your pain as I have been there too. Things can get better though with different choices and changes moving forward. Make 2025 your year to find out how.

Muscloskeletal Syndrome of Menopause (named as such by Dr Vonda Wright) is where you feel joint and muscle pain which causes some women to struggle to move comfortably. Not good when you’re a Dog Pro, right? This can occur at perimenopause and beyond due to the lack of oestrogen in our system. Even the fitness of athletes has been side-swiped by this condition despite not having endured any obvious injuries. Symptoms can include frozen shoulder; a loss of muscle mass and bone density and it can worsen osteoarthritis and more. Women start losing bone density by as much as 6% as hormones fall in perimenopause (the bit before menopause). This can go up to as much as 20 % as you progress through your menopause journey. Half of women over 50 will break a bone due to poor bone health! So, what can you do about it? 1. Take HRT which can increase your bone density. 2. Weight bearing exercise can increase bone density by up to 3 % a year; jumping, lifting weights, stomping up and down the stairs, star jumps – do this at least three times a week. 3. Take Calcium & Magnesium supplements along with Vitamin D. 4. Good nutrition.
