Charlie normally gets quite worried with clipping, his mummy gave him some sedation and with lots of encouragement and the right units he was absolutely perfect for his covercote blade irish ☘️

Please may all clients that are using oral sedation please be reminded it takes 45minutes for peak effect, please don’t sedate until I state I am on my way with exact ETA. This means that we can get the most out of the sedation and avoid any issues if I possibly run late or run into traffic en route

3/5 clips done yesterday, 2 of which needed a supportive and patient approach, all stood foot perfect. Cannot express enough the importance of choosing the correct handset to use on the horse.

I am so busy at the minute with clipping, work, trying to sort my own horse and life my head is mashed 😂 if you’ve asked me for a clipping date or I’ve not got back to you about something please, you have my permission to harass me 😂😂 I am not avoiding you on purpose, I’ve just got a horrendous memory I’d forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on!! As the weather starts to deteriorate, cold nights are here and relentless rain it’s time to consider mud fever.

What is mud fever?
Mud fever (also known as bog burn) is the reparative wetting of skin, allowing microbes to pe*****te and cause infection to the dermis. It is very commonly associated with sores (pictured below) alongside lameness and inflammation.

How to treat?
Keeping the area clean and dry, using topicals such as active wash/ hibiscrub/ muddy buddy wash will clear the microbes from the surface. Administering topical creams such as barrier creams, sudocream, I prefer petroleum jelly mixed with iodine to soften the scabs which are then easier to remove allowing for the skin to be kept clean. Avoiding allowing the horse to be stood in mud for prolonged periods of time is also recommended. *Any concerns in regards to sores, possible infection, swelling to the lower limb and lameness it is strongly advised to consult your vet*

How can I prevent?
As we know to be proactive is better than to be reactive, applying pig oil before turn out is very effective, other barrier creams/ oil based products to provide a skin barrier are also good. Keratex powder is hydrophilic. You also have the option of booting up, mud fever boots can provide good protection however be mindful that cobs legs shapes don’t normally allow boots to sit properly and can slip when out.

I personally use pig oil daily every AM before turn out, it’s best to start now before the scabs set in!

When you hire me to clip your horse you don’t just pay for the clip, you pay for my years of knowledge, the hundreds of pounds worth of equipment I have, every blade, from super fine to covercote, from handset to heavy duty, all regularly serviced.

When you hire me to clip your horse you pay for the meticulous clip, trying my best to remove every single line and stray hair, for the advice on improving coat condition as it feels “a little dull this time”, “it appears there is some scabs, definitely make sure to keep clean and speak to your vet; from my experience with these conditions I recommend these affordable products…”.

When you hire me to clip your horse you pay for the years of reading a horse’s body language, figuring out in a split second if they are comfortable and if not what can be done to improve the experience. I will always work in the best interest of the horse, especially if that means not putting anybody in danger, so if I ask you to leave the stable please trust me- over the years in the ambulance service I’ve seen some horrific injuries.

Lastly, when you hire me to clip your horse, I am there to support you for those 90minutes or more, we can talk, laugh, cry or even just have a cup of tea. I am close enough to you to understand, anything that is said is under strict confidentiality and will never be shared to anybody else.

So the £35-60 for that clip may seem expensive to some, but to those who truly understand, it’s more than just a rushed clip. It’s your mini therapy session, a calm relaxing time for all, expertise and passion included in the price.
