Let's show some extra love to our furry friends battling cancer during National Pet Cancer Awareness Month! This month helps to raises awareness about ways to prevent and treat cancer in our beloved pets. 🐶🐱

This memory from November 20, 2015 popped up today.

Chance was very fortunate to have had so many people in his life that loved and support him...

One of the most dramatic turnarounds we have witnessed as shelter volunteers has been the transformation of Chance, who was morbidly obese when he arrived at AACAC. (He was given up at age 5 because his owners, who had him since he was a puppy, moved to a house with stairs to the outside that he couldn't navigate because of his weight.) Chance left AACAC in May 2017 with a foster for Bella's Bully Buddies. That foster -- now Chance's adopter -- took him to the vet a few days ago for a one-year checkup and weigh-in. His health is good and wow, look at that new weight, a loss of more than 50 pounds! Chance now bounds up and down steps, races across fields and, well, just enjoys his great new life. You can follow his exploits on Milo's adventures.

PLEASE SHARE: We are not alarmists, so here are just the facts: Our shelter's dog cages are FULL -- full to the point where a Great Dane is now housed in a shelter office. Below are our available dogs as of this morning, including some but not all of those currently in our foster homes. Also not included below are quite a few dogs we must house who are not available to the public, including some who weigh more than 100 pounds apiece. We are an open-access shelter, which means we must accept EVERY dog brought to us from Anne Arundel County, even if we no longer have empty cages to house them. We are receiving multiple "stray" dogs every day whose owners never come to reclaim them, and numerous owner give-ups as well.

Our plight is not unique. Shelters across the county are having a similar experience. To avoid being forced to euthanize adoptable dogs, we need more fosters and more adopters (we have been waiving adoption fees for months). Many of our rescue partners, especially those who take larger dogs, cannot help us because they are in similar circumstances and need adopters/fosters as well.

If you can foster or adopt, please do so. You will be saving a life. If you cannot help in that way, please share this -- and please be kind. Thank you, supporters.

Link to our foster/adoption info: http://www.aacounty.org/animal-control/pet-adoption-fostering We are open until 6 p.m. tonight, and from 10 - 3 on Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 19 is the one Sunday a month the shelter is open for adoptions). (3282)

It pains me to post that our old man Chance lost his battle with Cancer today at home with Jennifer and I by his side. Chance was a quirky, loveable soul that endeared hisself to you as soon as you met him. I believe that this disease and losing Milo was just too much for him, but he would never give up so we had to make that hard decision for him. This is a strong breed that truly just wants to love you and be loved. The Three Amigos from Bella's are together again on a hill overlooking their property...

Our reluctant Stegosaurus, Chance has been drafted to join us at this year's trunk-or-treat! Our theme this year is, you guessed it, Jurrassic Park. I think he will warm up to the idea on Saturday when he gets all of the attention from the kids... 😊

I brought this small mattress upstairs yesterday evening so I could lay beside Milo's bed to give him company and keep an eye on him. Now Chance thinks he has a new bed! 🤣

It is with a heavy heart that I am posting this. Milo lost his battle with Lymphoma at 3:35 this morning with Jennifer and I by his side. His will to live and love us was always strong and this terrible cancer did not take that will from him. What it did take in the end was his mobility, and brought him pain, which happened quickly in less than a 24 hour period yesterday.
Milo's Adventure here may be over, but we want to believe it is continuing on the other side of the bridge. He is buried on a hill on our property beside Dillinger, hopefully running with Dillinger, Joe and Nibbles free of his pain. He will always be with us and we will keep his memory alive.

Come on Chance, there is activity in the kitchen!😂

Out for our Sunday morning walk.

10/09/2023

Out for our Sunday morning walk around the property and instead of going back to the house Milo has decided he wants to go down the driveway. Maybe because down the driveway , & then down the road was part of our walks in the past. I coaxed him to go back to the house to get a K9 Kraving cookie. Long walks are hard on him now, but he would go in a second. The joints in his back legs "click" with every step, which does not appear to bother him or cause any noticable pain.
It will be 2 months since Milo was diagnosed with Lymphoma this Thursday 9/14, and next Sunday 9/17 will mark one month since Chance was diagnosed with cancer. Milo has lost a lot of muscle and weight, but he is still very active & social, and has a great appetite. Chance still seems, and looks the same other than labored breathing sometimes when he sleeps. You would never know he had anything wrong if you saw him. Chance decided to skip the walk this morning, he was hanging out with Jennifer. I'm sure he will go with us later...

Zeus has been in in the shelter for a full year, he deserves his forever home. Let's share this post and help Zeus find his home...

PUPDATE ON 8/24/23: ZEUS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!!!
365 days. Zeus has now been in the shelter for a full year. Since we shared his backstory 6 weeks ago, we've been waiting to tell you some good news, but we're still coming up short.
Zeus has had several great meet and greets. Several promises to take him home and give him the life he deserves. They tell us how wonderful he is and how they're going to come tomorrow to take him home...and then no one comes tomorrow. Our heart breaks for him every single time. On top of that, we can't even have a proper party for him yet because of the kennel cough that's going around the shelter. 😞
A year is too long for any dog, much less one as smart and sweet as Zeus. Will you continue to share his story and help him find home?
