Hello Cataldi Cat Friends

Since my September update, I have been so busy,

Four months ago we rescued three tiny kittens near the park. Sadly, one baby passed away. For the remaining two babies, we found a wonderful foster mom, and she cared for them for the past four months. Spay and neuter, vaccinations and socializing.

I am so pleased to announce they both were adopted together and will never be separated. See their attached picture.

Although I still continue to struggle with health issues, I am able to work on a few colonies needing care. One colony we have trapped seven ferals for spay and neuter. We still have three or four cats to catch in this colony.

I will keep this update a bit short out of respect for the loss of one of my ferals named "Bat." Sadly my darling Bat got a respiratory infection Mycoplasma. I kept her in the house a month, giving her medication. She had four trips to different vets, and the prognosis was that she most likely would not recover. I struggled watching her suffer, and finally made a decision to send her to heaven November 15.

I am sure many of you know this pain. In her honor, I am going to lift my head, pray for her peace and continue helping cats. Everyone loved you Bat. Thank you for giving us so much joy.

It is Thanksgiving, Thank you for family, friends, pets, health, and Bat.

John

And a note from John's son, Jason: My dad continues to feed cats all around his town (with gas bills), to pay for their medical bills and food, to catch them after long hours of training them to be accustomed to the traps, to set up all the appointments for their care, to care for them in his garage after they have surgeries, and to pay for their food. When he gets donations, he is so appreciative. Many thanks to all of you who have helped him along this journey.

Hello Cataldi Friends.

I haven't update since February. So much going on, and little time to stop and update.

As I mentioned before, I am no longer trapping or feeding colonies except for emergency situations.

As I deal with health issues, and the years of stress helping the cats, I have pretty much run out of strength to continue. I am happy to say new friends have stepped up and learned trapping and the task of daily feeding many colonies.

I would like to acknowledge a few of these wonderful people; Susan in San Jose, Meily in Milpitas, Pranov in San Jose, Wen in San Jose, Alifiya in San Jose, Adrianne in Milpitas, Lily in Milpitas, and Betty in San Jose.

All of these kind people spend hours trapping, spay and neuter planning, fostering, finding adoption families transporting and paying for so many expenses from their pockets. There are so many people helping that I can't name them all. It is an incredibly difficult and stressful task. But we love them all.

We have saved hundreds of cats, and kittens. You can also add a few opossums to our list.

I hope to update more often. Please adopt a cat from anywhere and have it spayed or neutered, and love it.

Thank you,
John Oncay

A note from John's son, Jason, who posts his updates for him:
My dad might have stepped back (slightly) from the busy work of trapping and fostering, but he typically has a cat in his garage at least once a week. This happens when one is trapped (or he does the trapping) and then he cares for it with food and a place to go to the bathroom. He goes back to the garage over and over to talk to the cat who is waiting for the next appointment for spay/neuter/shots, etc., and provides some loving attention if the kitty will handle it. Then, if he and his group of supporters can not find a free appointment, he ends up paying for the neutering and shots out of his pocket, and when all added up, it comes to hundreds of dollars every month if we also include food, gas, etc. His income is fixed, and still, he makes this commitment. It has been many months since his last update, but his efforts have been ongoing. Just yesterday, I visited with him, and in his yard, I often greet the feral cats who live there most of the time. One cat, Jackie, came up to visit with us, getting loving pets from him, as he has for seventeen years. Dad went into the house for a little container of boiled chicken, which is food that he cooks every week and stores in his refrigerator for his dog (that he rescued from the park) and the various cats who need the extra protein. Every day, he continues these loving actions for many, many animals.

It is this loving pursuit that you support when you donate, and we are so appreciative. Thank you for your messages and support.

Hello Cat Friends and Family.

It has been a long time since my last update.

I know many of you enjoy our stories and feel close to our cats when I write about them.

As I mentioned in my last update I personally have been struggling with sadness and the stress of saving these
animals.

I again lost one of my own indoor cats, "Baby." A huge boy at nearly twenty pounds and so loving to my dog Ruby.
Raised together, they played and slept together.
Baby was a strange mysterious boy, allowing only me to touch him. He was only five years old.

Baby developed crystals in his bladder, causing difficulty urinating, which then turned into total urinary blockage.
Without surgery he could die in a few days.

I rushed him to emergency, and the doctors reported he was totally blocked and would require a $5500 surgery. Even after surgery, there was no guarantee it would not return. He was suffering, I didn't have the money, but most of all I didn't want him to suffer anymore. My heart broken, I sent my darling to heaven. I held him as he slipped away and asked him for forgiveness.

Just before losing Baby, I lost Angel and Miracle, the two paralyzed kittens. Watching them die, I completely went into depression. I lost all my energy to continue trapping and fostering, so I have decided after many years, not to trap or foster. However, I will support the people trapping in other ways, and I continue feeding multiple colonies every morning before dawn.

I also continue to raise my fifteen outdoor cats here at home, and feed cat colonies at Cataldi Park and the Great Mall area.
I love them so dearly, and live in fear that I might lose one. This year I lost four of my own cats due to disease and illness. I never forget them.

Over the past eighteen years, fifteen of my cats have gone to heaven. Bless them all. They are so beautiful.

Thank you for listening and donating. Please try to adopt or support rescue volunteers when possible.
I have attached Baby's picture.

Hello Cat Friends. Today is 10/31/22.

It has been more than a month since my last update. Sorry, we are running around like crazy.

We continue to trap so many cats. We have been fortunate to get spay and neuter appointments at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley in Milpitas. We get maybe two or three appointments a month, but we take anything!!

We have spayed and neutered quite a few this month. We have fostered and rescued sick cats. We are completely booked trapping. We have so many requests.

Sadly, this month we lost three beautiful cats which had to be euthanized. One beautiful girl named "Freckles", was very ill with a nose infection, which may have been cancer. Her owner asked us to catch her and send her to heaven because she was suffering. Her nose was completely gone, and I have no idea how she was even functioning. Poor darling. October 27, Freckles went to heaven. She no longer suffers and is at peace. Bless you Darling.

I try to keep my updates positive. Drama and sadness is not what we want to hear. However the drama and sadness keeps us from turning away those who need help. We try to stay composed, but seeing these beautiful animals suffer or die can break anyone.

This past month has been my saddest. I lost two young 8 week baby brothers to Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a disease that nearly paralyzes the animal. In an effort to evaluate and possibly save these babies, we kept the kittens for more than a week. They required 24 hour care, and my partner Susan Nguyen and I ran two shifts, feeding them, changing their bed, helping them drink, and even go to the bathroom. They were slowing fading. They began to have respiratory problems. Our veterinarians told us their was little or no hope and that we should be merciful and send them to heaven. Our hearts were broken, our spirit now empty. We fell in love with them. How can we do this? We named them Angel and Miracle. They were so helpless. We took the babies to our vet with broken hearts. As Angel and Miracle passed away, amazingly, they held each other, and then Susan and I held them. I was changed forever this day. I will never forget them, their struggle, their suffering, or their beauty.

Attached are pictures of "Freckles" and baby brothers "Angel and "Miracle."

I am blessed to have been with Freckles, Angel, and Miracle during their final days. I told them I loved them. They left with part of me with them. I won't forget them, ever.

Sorry for the sad news. Please remember these animals in your thoughts, and love your pet every day.

Adopt if you can.

Regards,
John

Hello Cataldi Cat Friends.

It's been almost a month since my last update.

As usual, we are so busy, but we have saved many cats, connected to many wonderful people, received donations, and have made such great progress networking our activities to veterinarians and wonderful people.

I don't know where to start. So if you have read last month's update, one story was about a tiny boy we found at a school. This baby was covered in fleas and ticks. However we bathed him, and he went to HSSV in Milpitas for adoption. I am happy to say that we found someone to adopt him!! We only have to wait until he is old enough and has received all his vaccinations. Our hearts are relieved. Our work was not in vain!!

We recently had a request to catch a momma and her four kittens at Hall Memorial Park in Milpitas. Our contact, Meily, proved to us she has our same heart and was feeding the ferals at this location.

Susan Nguyen and I didn't hesitate and went to trap them. Day 1, the cats stayed behind the city's maintenance facility fence at the park and would not come out from behind it.

We contacted the city and asked them to unlock the fence long enough for us to trap. They agreed, but never showed up the first day. We had to pack up our traps and leave.

We called the city again. This time they showed up, and we caught 3 kittens, all about 5 weeks old. However, one kitten still stayed with her mom, so we had to return again. Unfortunately, the city didn't show up again to open the fence. My head was steaming. I was so frustrated. We left.

We didn't give up. We went back again, and we set our trap outside the fence. We prayed Mom would bring the last baby outside the fence, and she did just that!! We caught mom and the last kitten.

All four babies were accepted at the Humane Society of Milpitas. We were so thrilled!! They are up for adoption!!

Mom was spayed on 9/16, and Meily, the person that called us originally, paid for her operation!! Meily is dedicated to saving all the cats at this location. Two of these cats have Ataxia, where they have difficulty walking and eating. Meily said she will pay for their spay and neuter.

There are so many compassionate people willing help. We have strangers paying medical bills for wild feral cats!! What could be more beautiful? Thank you Meily. You saved lives, and what could be more rewarding??

I have attached some pictures of Hall Park Cats.

Thank you to all our friends and those who help us.

Hello Cataldi Friends.

The past few weeks have been super busy.
We have rescued kittens, fostered kittens, treated cats at the vet, and distributed some donated supplies.

The Triplets:
Last update I talked about the three black kittens, Jerry, Jenny and Runt, found at the park. I called them the triplets. They look so identical that I never knew which cat I was holding!!! After fostering them for the past six weeks, I am pleased to say that they have moved on to PetSmart for adoption. Jerry, the little boy was adopted within an hour!!!

We spent so much money to save them. They were spayed and neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, de-flead, their blood checked for disease, socialized, and loved. As you can imagine, we loved them so dearly, and saying goodbye was horribly sad. However I am so happy that they go on in life to be loved. They made it. So did I. I have attached a few photos.

Donations have been wonderful. We have received food from St. Francis Animal Protection Society, HSSV, and friends. We also received money donations. This is so wonderful. We have worked hard to network our rescue efforts, and help has arrived from so many kind people.

My Cat "Bat":
My personal pet cat, Bat, has been fighting an eye and nose infection. Took her to the vet and they gave her a long lasting antibiotic injection. She got a little better, but then two weeks later looked bad again. I put her on antibiotic pills for the past three weeks, but still the infection was present. I had a hunch that maybe something was in her nose or throat. I took her back to the Vet 8/15. The Doctor took three X-rays and found something back by her tongue. Her put her out and found a ugly hairball stuck above her tongue by the throat. He removed it, and she is so much happier. The money donations helped save her. Thank you. I have attached her picture.

Orphan Kitten:
A few days ago my neighbor called and said there was a tiny kitten following her at the nearby school. My friend is very allergic to cats and was somewhat afraid to pick him up. I rushed to the school, and this tiny three-week old baby was crying for help. I rushed her to my partner Susan's house, and we gave him a bath, removing hundreds of fleas and ticks!! It was horrible. We then bottle fed him and cuddled him. He slept so well. (Susan and I itched for an hour after seeing the fleas)!!! Fortunately, the Humane Society of Silicon Valley took him in for rescue. I have attached his beautiful pictures.

We thank everyone for their help and kindness. We continue to struggle since the San Jose Care Center closed up. We will continue to look for resources as we save these animals.

Kind Regards
John

Hello Cataldi Friends.

It has been a very busy month.
This past month, our activities have included trapping, spay and neuter, vaccinating cats, medical issues with some cats and fostering kittens.

Last month Susan Nguyen and I found four abandoned kittens at Cataldi Park. Someone put them in a plastic tub with a cushion and food, and them left them under a tree in the park. How can anyone be so cruel or heartless? I can not even imagine what type of person would do this.

We caught one of the babies and I took it in my home to care for him. We then caught two more two days later, and I took them in to my home also. Unfortunately the fourth baby was found on the road injured, and we sent it to a local rescue hospital. We never found out if the kitten survived.

I have cared for the three adorable black kittens now for nearly a month. They have now been spayed and neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, blood tested, and micro chipped.
In one week they go to our adoption center. It is so difficult getting attached to them, and then saying goodbye. I dread the day they leave, they are my babies forever.
I have attached pictures. "Jerry", "Jenny", and "Runt".

Good news this month is that a charity organization donated more than 2000 pounds of dry cat food, valued at more than $5000. I can not express my gratitude enough. All our volunteers can now feed our colonies without digging in our own pockets. The best news is that the donation will be continuous!!!!

The past two or three months has been very difficult for us. There is no longer a San Jose program to help us with spay, neuter and rescue for kittens. San Jose Animal Care Center is basically non-operational. All shelters are full of kittens, and not offering spay or neuter programs. Therefore, we have paid for so many services, and can only do so much. We are forced to leave many kittens where we find them and hope Momma cares for them.

I personally had a sad situation. My loving boy "Buddy" passed away at approximately18 years old. (Picture attached). He was a darling boy and all the neighbors would come by to see and pet him. I will always keep him in my heart and pray he is in heaven at peace. Bless you boy. Dad loves you.

Thank you everyone for your kind donations.

A special thank you to my dearest friend Alifiya. She is so supportive and cares for cats so deeply. Her kind words and support are wonderful. Thanks Ally! I continue this journey because you help so much.

Thanks to Jenny, my youngest daughter for always donating and sending cat food. Thanks to my children, they always support Dad!!

Please adopt if possible. Please.

Kind regards,
John

28/06/2022

Hello Friends of "Cataldi Cats."

It has been more than two months since my last update. Sorry!

So much activity that it's impossible to list, and at my age, I can't remember everything!!

The shelters are no longer taking feral cats or kittens. San Jose is under staffed and sitting with 400 kittens!!! They have no spay or neuter program right now, and HSSV in Milpitas has the same problem.

We are so frustrated, and can only trap for those people willing to pay for spay or neuter. Kitten trapping is a huge problem. We have no place to take them once trapped, and we must get their blood tests done with vaccinations before we even foster them. Kittens can be infected with deadly diseases which can be passed on to other healthy kittens.

Our volunteers have been paying for services, food and other medical needs.

Updates on a few cats:

"Daisy": Recently I fostered a cute little girl I named Daisy. She was near death from a upper respiratory infection and nearly blind from eye infections. I spent one month nursing her back to health with antibiotics and eye medicine and frequent baths. Fortunately, Daisy recovered completely and now has a new home. I have included photos of Daisy when she was trapped, and later healthy in her new home. Live long my darling girl. We will always have a special bond.

"Three Orphans": Susan and I got a call from a family who found three kittens, and the momma cat had died. We went to the house and were able to catch them. All of them were sick and starving. Sadly, momma laid a few feet from them where she passed away a few days before. Imagine this sight. Susan and I cried the whole time that we were catching the babies. Without hesitation, Susan rushed them to a medical facility that is open at night. Thankfully all were saved and will be fostered.
I have included their precious pictures.

"DooDoo" our son: June 24, my 3 year old boy "DooDoo" suddenly passed away. He was walking and suddenly collapsed near my house. He was only 3 years old, and the most loving boy ever. Losing them is so horrible. I raised him from birth and he followed me and my wife Kim everywhere. So difficult. I have attached his photo. We love you boy.

I have many more updates to write, but will continue maybe in a few days. As always, I thank everyone for your support and kindness.

Love your pet, and adopt, please.
John

Hello Cataldi Cat Friends.

It has almost been a month since my last update, and that happened because my computer hard drive went to computer heaven, and I haven't been able to do much. However, I have been extremely busy, and here is a story that can only happen to the Cataldi volunteers!!!

We actually had to save one of our own cats!! Susan, as you know, is our Cataldi volunteer also. She called me at 9:00pm, totally panicked and crying!! She said, "John! My cats all got loose outside!" Belle, Charlie and Jasmine escaped out the doggy door because Susan accidentally left it open. These babies are like my own children, and I jumped off the bed and put on my pants and shoes all in one motion.

Susan lives around the block, and I was there in three minutes! When I got there, Susan was sobbing. She said she found Charlie and Jasmine, but Belle was missing. Using my spot light, I searched her yard everywhere, and the last place I checked was behind her large shed. Stuck behind the shed and fence was Belle. She couldn't move, and we feared she was dead. However after a closer look, we could see she was breathing. The sight was too much for Susan, and she almost passed out. I couldn't reach Belle no matter what. She was so far from the edge of the shed.
I decided we needed to remove the neighbor's fence, and Susan got their permission. Measuring where she was, I went into the neighbor's yard and took out a section of fence. I then reached in and plucked her out. Poor darling was scared to death. We all cried, and Belle was okay. So was Susan! I have attached Belle's picture.

On April 12, a Fremont cat rescue team called me. They said there was a momma cat that had kittens in an attic, and the three kittens fell inside the wall!! The people living there needed help, although they freed the kittens by opening the sheet rock. The babies were hungry, and the people who helped get them out of the wall knew nothing about kittens. So, we got kitten formula, and I fed them with a syringe. I then focused on getting momma out of the attic. I didn't know that I wouldn't have access to a ladder, so I didn't bring one. Just like a circus act, we stacked two chairs to the roof, and we put the trap on the roof. The next morning, we caught momma and put her with her babies in a cage. They will now go to a foster home.

The San Jose Animal Care Center is closed because of staff issues. We are on hold for a while until they get staffed.

This was a good month with happy endings. The donations this month were wonderful. I received food and money. My youngest daughter Jenny sends food every month from Tennessee. Thank you Jenny. My oldest daughter Julie in Oregon, and my son Jason in Santa Clara always help me. My children have kind hearts, and love animals also. And to all those helping me, thank you. I have no words to describe how much you are appreciated. So many of you have become my special friends. I often think of all the people we have helped and the cats we have saved. You are never forgotten.

I have attached Belle and Charlie's baby pictures. Ohhh. We love them.

Thank You,
John

Hello From Cataldi Cats.

Our last update included the story of an abused cat that we trapped. This poor cat had been chained by its leg to a planter box. This story is so horrible. The volunteers that rescued this cat raised more than $4000 to have him neutered, do his dental work, and bring him back to health. They named him "Mr Flowers." Before being neutered, this boy was diagnosed with FeLV, which is feline leukemia. This illness is not only contagious to other cats but also usually terminal. So sad for this boy, who may not live long. However, it was agreed to spend the money anyway and let him live his last years happily, safely, and loved.
Sadly, Mr. Flowers passed away during his neuter operation. He never got to live in peace but now lives in heaven. Too much heartbreak to describe, so we need to move on and save others. Live in peace Mr. Flowers.

Last week we trapped a beautiful girl who was pregnant. This girl had three previous litters of kittens, and they all died from being homeless. Fortunately we caught her this time, and we had her spayed. She is now living peacefully.

On 3/16, we trapped two more pregnant, young cats in Milpitas. The owner refuses to fix them, so we go out and trap them when they leave her property. The cats have continued to multiply and die. We are now on a mission to save all the ones that we can.

We are always in need of volunteers to help us. The work is rewarding and physically not too difficult. However, you must have a strong heart to deal with sad situations at times. Please email me if you know anyone interested helping save these animals.

The last part of my update is so difficult to write. These updates have become my diary, and I sometimes spill my guts. This story
hurts my heart.

My beloved "MeMe," my big dirty boy that I raised from a kitten, passed away. MeMe was born in 2008 and was part of our family. He suffered from stomatitis. This painful gum and tooth disease affects so many cats, and expensive dental work is the only cure.
MeMe's condition happened all of a sudden. We didn't know he was having problems because he ate with no problems.

Last week MeMe's face swelled up, his eye swelled, and I thought maybe it was a bee sting. After two days it got worse. I took him to the vet, and the news was terrible. The doctor said it was stomatitis, and the infection was extremely bad. He told me MeMe would probably not survive any surgery because of his age. He said MeMe was suffering, and I should be merciful and send him to heaven.

I went back to the vet to see MeMe one last time. The drive there was hell. When I walked in, MeMe was laying there with a gas mask keeping him sleep. I will never forget seeing him lying there. I held him during his last breath and cherished the moment that I could be there for him. He is now forever in heaven and part of me is there with him. MeMe was cremated along with flowers from our yard. Bless you MeMe. MeMe's picture is attached.

Please continue to love your pets and never go a day without showing them you care.

The last update raised more than $250. This was wonderful. My expenses are high, and every dollar is great!! Thank you all so much. You are so kind.

Kind Regards,
John

Update 3/2/2022

Hello from Cataldi Cats in San Jose.

Last update included the story of Mary. I adopted her as she was sick and needed rescue from the shelter. She was suffering from URI and a skin rash, and I have have been caring for her at my house. Finally, her rash is nearly gone, and her upper respiratory infection is also gone. She is so loving . I love her but hope to find her an indoor home. She gets along with dogs!! She is so small and beautiful. Let me know if you are interested. (Her picture is attached)

I also posted the story of Caramel. Oh she is beautiful. I am happy to say my new friend Emmy adopted her!! Bless both of them. Live long Caramel. We love you so dearly. (Her picture attached).

We recently trapped a beautiful girl at a Stratford school near the Great Mall. She was very weak and sick, and I literally set the trap over her because she was so weak. We named her "Stratford," and fell in love with her instantly. We took her to the shelter. Her stomach was swollen, her legs were weak, and she was very lethargic. We were so worried for her. When we dropped her off, we had already made plans and set aside our own money to help her.

The next day, the shelter called and said Stratford passed away before surgery. I was totally heartbroken. Another day of sadness for our beautiful animals. Stratford is now in heaven. Live peacefully forever Stratford. We will never forget you, ever. (I have attached her picture).

We have resumed trapping at many locations. We see four or five pregnant girls at various locations. One beautiful girl we found is sick, and we rescued her. Donations are paying for her dental work. She is gentle and loving. She was abused by the owner terribly. This terrible person actually chained this cat where it could not move around freely. We are going to the extreme to give her a new life. Many volunteers have stepped forward to help us give her hope. Saving her will cost thousands of dollars, but we are so touched by this girl, and we will now change her life.

Our last update include pictures of Rosemary and Sage. We still need homes for them. If you recall, they are Mom and Son. Please help us.

Thank you for donations and support. I hope you know how much this means to me. I am so thankful.

Please adopt when possible and help all our animals when you see them needing help, especially if you know of anyone hurting or abusing them.

Happy New Year.

It has been more than a month since our last update. The Holidays, Covid -19 and the weather have kept us from trapping.

The shelter was closed from mid December until Feb 1, so we were unable to spay and neuter.

During this time we have been actively looking for families to adopt some of our beautiful animals. We have cats for indoor or outdoor living. We need help finding homes!!!

I recently adopted a very small sick cat. She is a young adult girl and I have named her Mary. She was brought to me sick and covered with a rash. She is so loving and gets along with our dog Ruby. Ruby loves cats anyway, so it was no big deal for her.

I have her in a very large cage where she is on medication and recovering after being on the street, cold, hungry and sick. She is slowly getting better, but still needs so much care. I worry for her every day, and pray she will survive. I have attached her beautiful picture.

We also have two beautiful indoor cats needing a home. They are mother and son. Rosemary is mom. She is only a few years old, and about eight months ago, gave birth to five beautiful babies while in our foster home. Her son Sage, needs a home. It would be wonderful if they could stay together. We love them but they need a permanent home. I have attached their pictures.

Also looking for a home is our darling girl Caramel. She was an outdoor cat abandoned by her family who moved away. I fed her every morning for eight months in front of the empty house where she lived. When I would drive up, she would call and cry to me. She would run to me, and I would pick her up and hug her. Driving away each morning was so sad, as she would chase after my truck. The heartbreak was too much, and Susan, my partner begged me to bring her home. I decided to call our foster mom Maria. Maria agreed to take her in, and she is now such a beautiful girl. It would be wonderful for her to have a home. Help us. I have attached her picture.

I really needed a break from trapping. The stress is overwhelming. It is so difficult to save so many. I hope to resume trapping soon. I want to focus on our cats needing homes for a while. Please ask friends and family to consider adopting.

Thanks again for all the donations. NARF has been donating food to us as well as many others. It is always a necessity as we feed so many cats daily. I have received such generous donations from wonderful people, including donations from my family. Thank you.
