It’s so nice when you have good quality, trained horses. Had a neighbours cow loose in the our paddock a couple of days ago that we were struggling to round up on foot. Decided it was a job better suited to a horse. After having nearly 2 months off I grabbed Cash out of the paddock, saddled him up and off we went to go cowboying. He didn’t put a foot wrong despite the chaos around him. Did a bit of extra work on starting reining manoeuvres afterwards in preparation for a clinic next weekend with Katherine Kelderman

Today I competed in an obstacle challenge at Blue Poppy Equine. Bubba and I were in the novice class. Whilst Bubba was hesitant in most of the obstacles I was very happy with the progress we have made from last time where he wouldn’t even consider doing them to today where he hesitated but still did them. He has shown today that we still have work to do with becoming even more responsive to leg.
Cash and I competed in the intermediate/open class and got first place! He is such a cruisy dude with not much fazing him. Still plenty to do with him in continuing education but he certainly enjoys doing the obstacles. I also got best horsemanship which was so exciting!
Was a great day for mum as well scoring second place in the novice devision with Cash. Their second time out and first time placing! Congratulations Mellisa Fracaro
Was a fantastic day out!

I’m currently working with Cyd. She is a 4 year old warmblood mare who has a few holes in her ground work and struggles when it comes to float loading. Her ground work is coming along nicely. We have reintroduced float loading with clicker training which is working really well for Cyd who becomes quite nervous when she is around the float. Cyd has a freeze response when she is feeling overwhelmed. Through our work so far she is freezing less each day and thinking about things rather than trying to shut them out. Each session she is given all the time that she needs to process information. Today we got to the point where she was willingly walking all the way into the float and standing there relaxed. So happy to see Cyd’s confidence growing in both float loading and just herself in general.

Round 2 completed of True Grit Cowboy Classic in Extreme Cowboy Racing. Bubba aced the manoeuvres but struggled with the obstacles this afternoon. Looking forward to working with him at home in becoming comfortable again with obstacles.
Cash once again did amazing. So many firsts today with him including Mellisa Fracaro accidentally lassoing herself rather than the barrel 😂 now to continue to refine leg aids and manoeuvres with him. Thanks to our amazing strapper Glenn Fracaro! Overall an amazing day!

Round 1 completed of True Grit Cowboy Classic in Extreme Cowboy Racing. Bubba was having a bit of on off morning but still did well considering. I had an absolute blast competing Cash (my mums horse) in the intermediate devision. Such an amazing horse who we discovered today can actually move when he wants. Was fantastic to see mum out on Cash having the time of her life! Looking forward to round 2 this afternoon

Shiloh is a 9 year old quarter horse mare standing at approximately 15/15.1hands. Stands for the farrier, will stand tied up all day, self loads on the float, will meet you at the gate, isn’t marey. Has never kicked, bitten, reared, bucked, bolted. Doesn’t need to be worked everyday though is happy to be. Isn’t fazed with horses playing up beside her when being worked. Has primarily been out trail riding over the past few years with her previous owner. We have since been focusing on arena work. She has a soft mouth, moves nicely off of your leg, is more of a plodder but is responsive. Is learning how to work with contact though is amazing to ride on a loose rein. Rides nicely off of your seat. Is best suited to an intermediate rider though has been ridden by beginners under instruction. Would suit trail riding, pleasure, ranch versatility, obstacles.

The cons:
Doesn’t have a mean bone in her body though can become nervous trail riding by herself (doesn’t put a foot wrong with company).
Can at times test her rider if allowed (may stop at the gate or stop and stare at something to get out of work. All she needs is to be asked to walk forward and she’s happy to).
Located Echuca Victoria. 5,🥕🥕🥕

This week I have been working with Kirky. He spent a few weeks here being restarted undersaddle 2 years ago and we have spent the past week doing ground work. He was quite tense to start with after having nearly 12 months off. We have been working on softness and responsiveness and through this he has relaxed a lot. Kirky loves having a job to do but at times has his own idea of what that should be. He is still as quirky and people oriented as he was when I last worked with him. It has been a pleasure working with Kirky again and can’t wait to see him and his owner back on the trails having fun!

Yesterday Bubba and I competed in the Extreme Cowboy Racing International Championships. With our limited practice on obstacles from our last competition and inconsistent riding due to the weather I’m extremely happy with how we went. We got second place in our division with Chelsea and her horse Denver getting third place. Overall we had a great day out!

Day 2 of the introduction to cattle work clinic with Bubba. Such an amazing improvement today. We started again with suppling our horses before moving onto the mechanical cow. After lunch we did some more work with the real cows. Bubba today was a lot more responsive and was really starting to engage his hind end. Really excited to continue with what we have learnt over the weekend!

Day 1 of 2 down of Bubba and I first clinic together. It is an introduction to cattle work which Bubba has never done before. Started the day off with some exercises to supple our horses before moving on to flag work, then starting on a cow in the afternoon. I’m continued to be impressed by Bubbas willing attitude and eagerness to listen. He was hooked on the cows the moment we started working them. It was a fantastic day and I can’t wait for what’s next tomorrow!

Snickers is a 10 year old quarter horse mare standing at approximately 14.2 hands. Happy to be paddocked and worked by herself or with another horse. Loves being fussed over. Great to catch, float, will stand tied all day, great for the farrier (doesn’t require shoes). Can be left in the paddock for 6 months and jump straight on. Needs a bit of support to keep her straight in arena work. No nasties in her. Would be great at ranch, green rider reining, trail riding. Has done clinics, trail riding, obstacle courses, been lightly used as a lesson horse. Sad sale to an approved home. Located Echuca Victoria. POA

Meet Shiloh. She is a 9 year old quarter horse mare. She has done an extensive amount of trail riding and now just needs a refresher in the arena. She can be a typical red head when she is being asked to do something she doesn’t know how but she is a smart mare who figures things out quickly. Shiloh loves being around people and is always ready at the gate when you arrive. We are currently focusing on finding the forward button and being supple. Super excited to be working with Shiloh!

Today Bubba and I did a session in liberty and trick training. He is now confident in counting, side passing towards and away from me which he is now beginning to do completely at liberty. Today he began learning how to bow, and nod. Whilst he loves being ridden he also enjoys doing something different and having a change in scenery which I think is important for all horses. We have our first clinic together coming up towards the end of the month and I can’t wait!

Bubba has been going super lately. He is now back in work after having a small break. The first couple of rides back in he was a bit lazy and dull to aids so we have gone back to basics to reestablish some buttons. Something that I’ve been reminded about in bringing Bubba back into work is if your horse is struggling in what is being asked then break it down and make sure the individual parts of the exercise are being understood before trying to put it all together.

A bit over a month ago Husky spent a couple of weeks here coming back into work. He is now back for a few rides as he has figured out how to get out of work with his owner. He’ll have a quick tune up before his owner comes out for a few lessons and get to the point where she feels comfortable with taking him home again and continuing with lessons. Husky can be sensitive to contact on the bit. He will kick when he doesn’t want to do something or doesn’t like the way he is asked. The past couple of rides I have been focusing on getting him moving forward. Next I’ll reintroduce contact and getting him more supple through his body.

Summer and Kehlani arrived a couple of days ago to receive some further education. Summer is 5 year old Percheron who is green under saddle and harness. She has big, beautiful movement and once she gets to know you she is an affectionate mare.
Kehlani is a 7 year old Percheron x warmblood. She is green under saddle and harness. She is a very quick and willing learner who loves being around people. I look forward to working with Summer and Kehlani!

For the next couple of weeks I will be working with Husky. He spent a couple of months here last year being given some further education but has now been out of work for a little while so I am focusing on giving him a refresher for his owner. He is naturally a very lazy horse but is switched on and picks things up quickly. Today we were focusing on softness and awareness of his rider. He is an enjoyable horse to work with

Lilly has been doing really well lately. She’s been worked inconsistently the past few weeks which is proving to not faz her at all. Today I jumped on ba****ck and did some work in getting her to follow her nose, and my body on a circle. She is very soft and responsive and always waiting for what’s next. She is still a bit wary when I’m standing on the mounting block but is getting better every session.

Today I got to work with Sandy. She is a yearling filly who is looking for her new home. She knows the basic handling and today we began to expand on a few things including float loading. She loves attention, enjoys having something to do, and soaks everything up like a sponge. She is going to make someone very happy as she is such a beautiful filly and tries her heart out in everything.
Excuse the dodgy photos. She’s very hard to take photos of as she likes to follow people.

Gypsy has now found an amazing home

Gypsy is a 15 year old riding pony x mare standing at approximately 13.2 hands (unmeasured). Not registered but sire is Fairlight Acres Kidman. In the past she has been ridden by a 9 year old girl who attended pony club with her until she outgrew Gypsy. She doesn’t need to be in constant work though is happy to be. Under saddle she has a soft mouth, moves nicely off of your leg, not easily spooked, happy to be worked by herself or with another horse. She has in the past been to pony club and pony club competitions, has done beach and bush riding. I haven’t taken her out along the trail but from what I’ve seen she would be better going out with another horse if her rider isn’t confident (can get a bit unsure in unfamiliar areas if not given direction). Ride with contact or a loose rein. Naturally likes to plod though will pick up the pace when asked.
The cons:
She can at times be pushy on the ground if allowed to be. Whilst Gypsy doesn’t present separation anxiety when being ridden or taken away from other horses, she will pace all day if she is paddocked by herself.

Whilst I have found her to be a lovely mare to work with and amazing to ride I believe she would be better suited to an older child/teen. She is a patient mare with no dirt in her and plenty to teach a rider wanting to get out and about. Located Echuca Victoria. $6000

Gypsy has been super lately. When I first started working with her she was shut down and always wanted to be able to see her paddock buddy. She is now relaxed in being taken away from her paddock (and friend), happy to stand tied up, and isn’t fazed when she can’t see another horse. She is now so much more willing to learn and easier to teach now that she is 100% focused on what we are doing. She is still naturally on the lazier side and enjoys doing minimal amount of work but is soft in the mouth and moves off of your leg nicely. Gypsy will be looking for her new family in the coming weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing what is ahead for her.

After almost 4 months, mum had her first ride back on her trusty steed Snickers. They were both happy to be back together again. Today they were working on developing a soft feel when picking up the reins, and steering by using body position. It was great to see mum back in the saddle!

22/03/2022

One of the things that I like about Lilly is how she retains information. Lilly is always soaking up information and improving every day.
Whilst human brains have a left and right hemisphere, we use both halves of our brain at the same time. This is due to us having a developed corpus callosum which allows messages to travel freely between the two hemispheres. Horses have an underdeveloped corpus callosum which means there isn’t a lot of information that travels between the two hemispheres. You’ll often hear people say that horses have two brains. This is where the saying ‘what you teach to one side of the horse, you have to teach to the other’ comes in. Sometimes it’s like training two horses at the same time. And just like us, horses can be either left handed or right handed with one side naturally being stronger than the other (and sometimes easier to teach). There are horses who once teaching one side will also understand on the other side. Lilly is one of these horses who is very quick to pick up on things and appear ambidextrous. I love working with horses as they are all so unique and learn differently just like us!

Gypsy and Lilly are both doing well. They have been spontaneously worked over the past couple of weeks due to my work schedule. Today with Gypsy I did a bit of liberty work. She had a bit of extra energy but did really well in staying tuned in with me. She loves having a job to do but is very quickly learning how to be patient in waiting for what is asked of her next.
Lilly is such a sweet heart. She has her moments of confusion due to being green but tries her heart out in everything. We had a float loading session today as it’s an area where she’s not yet comfortable with. She had gained a lot of confidence by the end of the session which was lovely to see.

Today Lilly arrived. We did a join up session after she had a bit of time to settle in. She took a little while to join up being in a new environment with new people but once she did she was so relaxed and lovely to work with. She is level headed and willing to learn which will make working with her super enjoyable. She wasn’t fazed by the things that most other horses are when they first arrive (such as the bath tub and pipe next to the arena that are always the scariest things in the world!). We’ll continue doing ground work over the next few days as we get to know one another
