My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.
However, I was puzzled. Was the βcravatβ unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody β why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.
I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.
Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help β all while filming it for his TV show!
WTF π³π³π³
I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.
It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.
I then did some open-source research on "The Countryβs Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. Heβs essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.
According to his website, he charges Β£875 per session π€π§
Now Iβm not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if Iβm the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.
However, I couldnβt let this pass without making it public knowledge.
If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques heβll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training youβll receive is questionable at best.
Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

Police are investigating the suspected theft of a dog from a garden in South Norfolk.
It's believed H***h, a three-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever, was taken from the back garden of his owner's house in Flordon sometime between 6pm and 7pm on 13 August 2024. He is microchipped.

The Problem with Social Media
Very often when I speak to clients and new customers they inform me that theyβve been following some dog training guru on tiktok or facebook or one of the other social media platforms out there. They may even of bought a course. There are some really good on line courses on there but at the same time the dog training and behaviour industry isnβt regulated and often those with huge followings arenβt qualified and are taking complex issues and punishing the symptoms rather than addressing the cause. The really sad thing is that in many of these videos we are seeing dogs with lamenesses and postural abnormalities having methods used on them that will only serve to increase any pain that they are in and we are punishing what is essentially a communication and for many of those dogs they are protecting themselves as theyβre sore.
When we want to change behaviour, we are looking at changing emotions and that takes time. Far more time than a 30 second tik tok clip and itβs far less exciting. Weβre not looking to draw an audience or boost our egos, weβre looking at increasing your dogs comfort zone.
I have also had customers try to copy tactics that will put them in danger. Behaviour needs assessing in order to come up with the safe and correct behaviour plan. Resource guarding is one of those behaviours where there is an abundance of dangerous advice out there. Hand feeding is popular advice, but youβre putting yourself right in the firing line and for many dogs it doesnβt address the issue. Another horrendous piece of advice is to take whatever it is away from the dog, which firstly confirms for the dog that yes, you are not safe to have food around and secondly in doing so again makes the risk of a bite very high.
The very fact that the dog behaviour and training industry isnβt regulated makes it a minefield for dog owners and sometimes I even question how theyβre supposed to make the right choice!!
Here is a guide to help β
π©ΊAsk your vet
πΆLook at the APDT, IMDT, ISCP, ABTC, APBC.
πβπ¦Ί If your dog is reactive or has a behaviour problem you should be being asked for a pain assessment prior to sessions.
πAsk what happens if your dog gets it wrong. If the answer is physical discomfort, walk away.
πβπ¦ΊRemember if youβre looking for help with behaviour then choose someone who specialises in that and also aggression and reactivity is very different to bite work.
πβπ¦ΊChanging behaviour requires a holistic approach that isnβt just about the specific behaviour, it also involves lifestyle changes.
