Do you consider yourself a pet parent? A dog mom or dog dad? A cat lady? A feline fella? What do you call your pets - do you have a fur baby and pupster or a little monkey? Do you show complete strangers photos of your pet for no reason?
Well, you’ll be happy to know today is Parent’s Day, so you have every excuse to be awkwardly ‘my dog is smarter than your honor student’ bumper-sticker-level proud. To all the parents of human and fur kiddos we say - well done!
We all want to feel safe.
I NEED TO FEEL SAFE!
Like all living creatures, including us, dogs just want to feel safe – it’s a basic survival need.
When we think about feeling safe it’s natural to just think about not being harmed or being in danger, but it’s not just about physical safety - feeling emotionally or psychologically safe is just as important.
While physical safety may be obvious and simpler to address, emotional safety is far more complex and not always easy to recognise or identify.
The same applies to our dogs – they are sentient beings whose behaviour is triggered and driven by emotions.
So many behaviour problems that we see in dogs stem from the brain saying– “this is not safe!”
A dog that lunges and barks or behaves aggressively with another dog or person is probably doing so because they feel unsafe. They are trying to make the scary thing go away.
A dog that is guarding resources is doing so because they are afraid that the resource will be taken away – they don’t feel safe when another animal or person approaches that resource.
A dog that is reacting to fireworks or thunderstorms or other noises is doing so because they don’t feel safe. The same can be said for separation distress – the feelings of panic when left alone – “I am not safe!”.
Some dogs may never get over a specific fear, but doing all we can to help dogs feel safe in our world is one of the most important gifts we can give them.
Our first responsibility should not be about training, obedience or trying to change behaviour, but to focus first and foremost on building trust, self-confidence, resilience, creating a safe and secure base and being the person that our dogs can rely on and trust.
In the words of Dr. Gabor Maté - "Feeling safe is the treatment and creating safety is the work".
In my words (as it pertains to dogs) – It is our responsibility to put in the work to enable our dogs to feel safe and when they feel safe, this will be part of the treatment or the solution to the problem.

Today is a day for bonfires, hot dogs, sparklers and rosy cheeks covered in watermelon juice. But for lots of pets, 4th of July celebrations are a bit of a waking nightmare. How are your pets with fireworks? My dog, Loca, developed noise sensitivity around age 3.
Fireworks are so scary for her that she needs the help of medication to get through it. Gabriel can get through it with the help of a Thundershirt. I also make sure to have some type of noise on in the house during this time as it can help to muffle the sounds of the fireworks a bit. Things like dog calming music, white noise, or the tv is on in the evening. I wish my neighbors could understand and set their fireworks off at one time (if they feel they need to at all), instead of setting them off at random times for days.

● Always use a leash

● Keep your pup inside while fireworks are happening so they don't run away from being scared
It may not be possible every day, but is a great one to celebrate all the benefits pets can bring to the work environment - like lowering blood pressure, and increasing job satisfaction. Fostering a pet is a rewarding experience that comes with plenty of advantages for the foster and pet. Fostering animals opens space for animal shelters and rescues to take in more pets so they can save more lives.
If you’re not ready to serve as a foster for pets, you can still help out! You can volunteer or donate to your local shelter to help keep operations running smoothly. Even sharing adoptable pets or telling your stories about successful rescues on your own social media will help bring awareness and inspiration to others who may decide to foster a pet and save a life while brightening their own!

BARRIERS TO LEARNING – WHY SOME DOGS STRUGGLE TO LEARN
“My dog is stubborn, doesn’t listen to me, a slow learner, not the smartest, tries to be in control, will only do it at home, will only behave sometimes, is uncontrollable……” – these are comments that are often heard.
Just like us, dogs need the right kind of conditions to either be able to learn something new or to bring about a change in behaviour.
Dogs are not robots that can be programmed by a set of specific inputs that guarantee consistent results. They are individual, sentient beings that need to be understood.
If we’re feeling stressed, anxious, tired, over excited, too distracted, not feeling well, have no motivation etc. we will find it really difficult, if not impossible to learn something new, change our behaviour or change a habit. The same applies to dogs.
A dog’s emotional state, the surrounding environment, motivation, age (pups, adolescents, seniors) or any health issues all have a significant impact on their ability to learn.
If your dog is having a hard time learning something, look at these factors and see if there is a reason that may be preventing progress.
Maybe your dog is just having an “off” day, just like we do.
Try again tomorrow or next week and set your dog up for success by having realistic expectations.
Learning or changing behaviour takes time, patience, consistency, understanding and the right conditions.
While many brave individuals have defended our country, countless animals have also served us in a variety of ways. Today, let’s honor those who died in the line of duty as well as the sacrifices made by a surprising array of animals.

They say it takes around three months for rescue dogs to become fully settled into their new home. For me, that was not the case! My boy, Gabe, was very shut down when he came to my home. It took him a long time to just feel safe. He's been with us over two years now and we still see new things from him (and he's 7 years old!) So, it might have taken long to become part of the family, but regardless, the rescue was worth it. ❤️

If a fear reactive dog is in the height of a reaction your dog is beyond learning anything. They are in their flight, fright or fight state and correcting this does absolutely nothing to teach your dog how to not be reactive.
When a dog is reacting it means that the dog has lost control of logic and their brain is flooded with stress hormones. This makes reasoned thought or learning impossible.
Your dog cannot learn in a reactive state.
Counterconditioning and desensitisation, while keeping your dog under threshold is a proven, effective way to lessen reactivity.
The best thing to do if your dog goes over its threshold and reacts is to walk away in the opposite direction.....keep going until your dog stops and do a U turn to reengage at a better distance.
If you do not reengage your dog will begin to think their reaction worked (it created distance between themselves and the fearful stimuli)....and you can have a cyclical reaction.
Always work under your own dogs threshold .

Have you updated your pet’s disaster preparedness kit since this time last year? 🤔 Think about the basics for survival (food, water, first aid, collar/leash, medical records) and don’t forget to double check the expiration date on all your meds!

Max got some one-on-one time yesterday too. He enjoyed a sniffy walk and practiced moving away from the good smells as well.

Post some pictures (or video) of your dog demonstrating their favorite activity. Loca lives up to her name (crazy). She will do just about anything for the catch. Playing frisbee is one of her favorite activities.

I graduated from Kutztown University’s Dog Training and Management program, as well as their Canine Behavioral program. While going through this program, I also mentored with Susan Bulanda, the programs founder.
In 2009, I started working at Cold Nose Lodge, which is a dog daycare, boarding and training facility. I continue to work there to this day. I’ve gained valuable experience watching and learning dog body language while attending to the dogs in the daycare rooms. I also teach group classes for Cold Nose Lodge.
Since 2018 I have been lucky enough to be coached and mentored by two truly inspirational trainers; Lauren Langman and Tom Mitchell. Absolute Dogs is their online training academy which boasts students from across the globe. I am part of the Pro Dog Trainer movement. Pro Dog Trainer is a worldwide network of trainers who are affiliated with Absolute Dogs and their training ideas and methodology.
Also, in 2018, I started Get Connected Canine Coaching, LLC. as a result of seeing dogs that were afraid to be around other dogs in group classes or uncertain about being around other people.
Get Connected offers in-home private and online coaching to those dogs that are not comfortable around others or for those people that can’t work classes into their schedules. Online coaching is also an ideal way to get the training help you need while the world is in lock-down due to Covid-19!
