Put your hand out... just let him sniff your hand ❌
She's nervy with anyone new, just crouch down ❌
Oh heck no....
I appreciate approaching a dog is also unique to each individual dog and the situation you are in at the time but please don't approach a dog you do not know with an outstretched hand or crouch down.
There are reasons hands and faces are the most bitten parts on a human.
Crouching down puts you in a position where you are unable to move quickly, and because you don't know this dog (and they do not know you).....you may need to move away very quickly.

A sniff of a hand is NOT permission from a dog to touch them.
It doesn't mean you are now friends and have built trust, it means they sniffed your hand which was thrust right in front of them.

Many dogs will very warily get closer and sniff an outstretched hand then immediately back off if they sense you are suddenly nervous around them, they register your respiration/heart rate has changed (some are aware your adrenaline has risen too).... and they may bite that same hand if they feel threatened enough.

Your hand is in very easy reach for them.
As is your face if you crouch down.....

🐾Keep your pet at a healthy weight with quality, nutrient-dense food.
🐾Spay or neuter your pet at an appropriate age.
🐾Minimize exposure to carcinogens and other toxins.
🐾Don't skip your pet's yearly physical check ups.

Pass the word by sharing this post or if you have a personal story with pet cancer and feel obliged to share it, there are tons of pet parents who could benefit from knowing they are not alone and that people are fighting to end !

According to Canine Journal, the pumpkin and hotdog were the most popular pet costumes last year. I think Star Wars always makes the "most popular" list each year, so if you're thinking outside of the box this year, I can't wait to see the results! 🎃 Happy Halloween! 🧙

Show me pics of your pups in their costumes in the comments!

Pit Bull type dogs have been a hot topic for a long time. They are the
heart of breed specific legislation, nature vs nurture debates, dog fighting cases, sensationalist TV shows, and more.

But everyone knows that, right? Do you know what we should be spreading this ?

That ALL dogs deserve an education based on a positive approach, they deserve a family that carefully considers the necessary management to keep them safe and set them up for success, and they deserve to be considered as an individual with a unique personality.

Help me spread the word today so we can all get one step closer to ending discrimination against Pit Bulls!

Today is and while the core of its initiative is to get shelter pets adopted, there are still A LOT of ways you can make your dog's day. Start with one of these:

1. KONG or Lick Mat it up using your dog's fav lickable treats.
2. Soothe away pet stress with a gentle massage. (TTouch anyone?)
3. Snag a jazzy new eco-friendly collar for your dog.

If you've done the above and you're ready to really make an impact, then adopting a local shelter dog is the ultimate way to make a dog's day!

Every day, vet techs put their knowledge and experience into providing the best care for our pets.

But they give so much more than that!

They give their heart and soul, literally, in a dedication that goes for beyond the traditional clinic work hours and whose limits often exceed physical and emotion barriers.

Will you join me this in showing your deep appreciation for all they do for our pets, and also for us and our humans families?

There are several ways anyone with (or without) a pet can participate in . Here are a few:

1. Be aware of the needs of your own household pet. Are they microchipped? Is your home *really* pet proof? Do you have a pet disaster preparedness plan?
2. Volunteer at your local shelter. Foster a pet, volunteer your time, donate money or supplies, like blankets, towels, food.
3. Share all the tips you encounter in your news feed. Spread awareness to other pet parents to help keep pets safe.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
It may be really disappointing and frustrating when our dogs are not the social beings we expected them to be.

Many believe dogs should just naturally get along with other dogs, after all they’re the same species.

Some believe the “unsociable” dog has a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”.

Early, appropriately timed and correct socialisation is vitally important, but sometimes despite all of this, some dogs are just not that sociable.

Sometimes this can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance and sociability, which also change throughout life.

If we, as a human species, don’t get along with everyone we meet, how can we expect our dogs to?

Do we label every person that has an argument, doesn’t make friends with everyone they meet, doesn’t like every other person, prefers not to socialise - as having a problem that needs to be fixed?

Why is it so easy to accept that every individual person is different than to accept that every individual dog is different?

When we have done what we can to improve our dogs’ social skills, we need to accept and acknowledge our dogs for the individuals they are, allow and respect their choice of whether to be sociable or not and never force interactions that a dog is not comfortable with.

About

Get Connected Canine Coaching, is owned by Lori Snyder, who is a certified, positive dog trainer. We offer in-person and online coaching for your dog training needs.

I graduated from Kutztown University’s Dog Training and Management program, as well as their Canine Behavioral program. While going through this program, I also mentored with Susan Bulanda, the programs founder.

In 2009, I started working at Cold Nose Lodge, which is a dog daycare, boarding and training facility. I continue to work there to this day. I’ve gained valuable experience watching and learning dog body language while attending to the dogs in the daycare rooms. I also teach group classes for Cold Nose Lodge.

Since 2018 I have been lucky enough to be coached and mentored by two truly inspirational trainers; Lauren Langman and Tom Mitchell. Absolute Dogs is their online training academy which boasts students from across the globe. I am part of the Pro Dog Trainer movement. Pro Dog Trainer is a worldwide network of trainers who are affiliated with Absolute Dogs and their training ideas and methodology.
