Sad things happen all the time, and sometimes we just don’t know why. Over the post day or two (today/yesterday) Tamale, the Sinaloan Milk snake, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 2. This is my 6th animal passing unexpectedly since December. I’ve had 3 western ribbon snakes, a checkered garter, a Pac-Man frog, and now him all pass away. I have NO IDEA what could’ve caused it, but I do know I have to go deep clean EVERY enclosure I have so that I can hopefully prevent any farther deaths. ⁣⁣⁣

Since the last comparison post did so good, earning 668 likes, 168 saves, 21 shares, and 92 follows I’ve decided to do another. This time it is of two female Western Ribbon Snakes, Thamnophis Proximus, this just shows the color variation within the species/subspecies. ⁣⁣⁣

This is why it’s important to know your species/subspecies. I’ve been getting WC Thamnophis Proximus, western ribbon snakes, from this company for years now and this is the first time this has happened. I ordered 4, and to my surprise only got 3, the 4th is this Mountain Garter Snake, Thamnophis Elegans Elegans, who I’ve decided to name “Imposter” since he was able to get by undetected. Thankfully the company is going to work with me so I can get another T. Proximus…… Also, it took me WAY to long to make these pictures. ⁣⁣⁣

I’ve had two surprise litters that past couple days, which is a good thing because I didn’t have anymore males since getting rid of my last one. I’m glad he was able to get these two girls pregnant before had so I don’t have to start over my bloodlines. ⁣⁣⁣

If you’ve been following me since the very beginning you may remember that ET, the second picture, was my first snake and she’s been in everything, tubs, tanks, custom enclosures, and a rack. This is where it’s key that I know my animals, because the rack is where she does the best at, if it’s anything else she’ll instantly go off feed until I move her back to a rack. Which is why she’s smaller for a 3 year old female ball python. She’ll soon be getting upgraded to a larger rack. The first picture is Gladiator, the only survivor of my 7 egg clutch from October of 2021 and now he’s an amazing 568g. Today I added some pothos to each of their tubs as another form of enrichment.

The past couple days has definitely been an adventure so far and something we’ll have to get used to, but I’d like to introduce everyone to Mr. Samuel Miguel Willis, he decided to make his appearance on September 17th.

Moved the fish/snails over to a 20gal long instead of the 20gal tall. I now have a 75gal and 30 gal sponge filter in there.

Cleaned up and rearranged the 20gal last night and added 2 feeder goldfish.

Here’s an update on the T. Proximus, western ribbon snake, litters. Just by holding them I can tell who their moms are. Queen’s babies are super chill, and Stripe’s aren’t. All of Stripe’s babies have the blue tint to them, I can’t wait to see how they get better. All the babies have different colored stripes, some have red tints, so I’m excited to see if it stays that way. They’ve eaten chopped silversides, tilapia, and salmon. ⁣⁣⁣

Changed out some of the dirt and rearranged the female mouse enclosure last night. I added pieces of a change to the left side for climbing and a moss box on the right, and as of this morning the moss is all out. 😂⁣⁣⁣

The camera doesn’t really pick up Stripe’s (the lighter one) blue coloring, but I’m really hoping for some nice blue babies from this litter I’m waiting on. Although the camera doesn’t pick up her blue, check out the contrast between her and Blue, the sire. ⁣⁣⁣

Over the past week I’ve upgraded the fish to a 20gal aquarium. Unfortunately the background I was making wasn’t going to work out, due to me using the wrong silicone, but I’m overall pleased with how this turned out. ⁣⁣⁣

Since switching these guys (mice) over to a natural/bioactive enclosure their natural behavior has changed drastically, it’s amazing.
Check out that tunnel/burrow system. They completed it in a day.

The substrate mix is “Earth Gro” potting soil, “Earth Gro” top soil, hay, and play sand. I provide them with grasses to nibble on and a basil plant that I’ll be replacing as they eat it. I give them strawberries, blue/blackberries, green beans, carrots, apples, or whatever else I have on hand.

I’ve started scattering their food around the enclosure instead of providing a bowl and the outcome has been great, because they actually have to dig/search for it.
I have crickets, dubias, and meal worm beetles in there that they dig/search for as well.

I mist the enclosure once a day, and I’ve observed that they’ll actually come out into the “rain” sometimes instead of hiding. I also swapped out the regular bulb for a UVB bulb, because mammals (like reptiles/amphibians) benefit from it, so I’m excited to see how that changes things.

The best part is there is absolutely NO “rodent/bad” smell. I literally just smells like dirt/wood/outside!⁣⁣⁣

while watching this episode after who knows how many times. I really felt the part when he says, “down size to improve the quality of living for something else.” I’ve already gotten rid of 2 ball pythons, a rat snake, a corn snake, and a spotted python so I can better focus on western ribbon snakes. Now I’m hopefully expecting two litters. ⁣⁣⁣

Who would’ve thought cockroaches could be cute? My wife absolutely HATES them 😂. We have a male and 3 females, one of which has some eggs in her, that we’ll have as pets and to get some feeders. We have this because my 4y/o is known at our local reptile shop for collecting any stray bugs he finds, which they let him/us keep, and they even give him a couple just for asking. This dude brings a smile to all the employees and other customers whenever we stop by. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

I even provide different enrichment for my fish, Raven (betta) and Ying & Yang (Cory cats), and crawfish (King) by placing clams upside down/right side up, placing them on top of things, and by placing both empty/fresh ones. The fish are able to nibble on them without flipping/knocking them over leaving King to find the right ones. ⁣⁣⁣

Let’s see if this causes Yoshi and Dusty to breed for me, Dusty’s been doing a lot of mounting lately, but I still haven’t gotten any eggs from these two. I switched out the rain pump for an air stone. Hopefully this makes the water less agitated for their liking. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

I’ve had a few people ask if western ribbon snakes, Thamnophis proximus, show sexual dimorphism in the form of tampered tails past the cloaca on females.
The answer to that is yes they do, but it’s the slightest tamper ever, and unless you have both a male and female it’s easy to overlook. Which is way it’s best to have them probed.
I’ve also notice, that females have a wider head than males in relation to the neck/nose. I honestly don’t know if it’s the same with all westerns, but it is with my group if 1.3.

Also, both Queen and Stripe are building follicles so in 25 days or so they should ovulate, and I should be expecting 2 litters in mid May/June, depending on if they have them closer to the 60 day mark or the 90 day mark. ⁣⁣⁣

After 2 years of working with and researching western ribbon snakes, Thamnophis proximus, it’s starting to pay off. This morning I checked on them, and noticed Queen has a s***m plug. The s***m plug is gelatinous (jelly-like) secretion used in the mating of some species, which is deposited by the male. The purpose of the plug is to delay female re-mating, prevent female ejection of s***m from unwanted males, prevent s***m leakage, and act as a s***matophore (a capsule containing s***m) from which s***m is released from over the course of 2 days. If success, in approximately 3 months, she’ll have a liter ranging from 4-36. I cannot say how excited I am for this, but only time will tell. Thank you to each and every one of y’all for being apart of this journey and for y’all’s support. ⁣⁣⁣

You guys when I say is totally worth it I mean it, it only cost $243.58 (shipping is part of that) to get all this. I got 100 large pinkies, 100 small mice, 50 extra small coturnix quail, 20 small rats, and 25 extra small chickens. The last picture is a size comparison of the quails and chickens, both extra small. ⁣⁣⁣
