Pugsley has honestly been the best cat I could have asked for to help train Maeva, he is calm, confident, playful and can hold his own pretty well. He was also hand raised around dogs so speaks "dog" quite fluently!

Hopefully Wentworth (my shy kitty) will warm up to Maeva too with time, but until that day I will keep providing him with safe spaces where he can choose how close he wants to be โ™ฅ๏ธ

This morning I got to hang out with Caesar and his lovely humans ๐Ÿงก

We talked about building on his previous training; to help reduce his barking at home, his reactivity on walks and his loose lead walking!

Caesar is a very lucky pup to have such dedicated humans looking out for him!

Does your pup have a "witching hour"? ๐Ÿง™๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

This is a small (or long haha!) window of time, usually after a meal where pup is just full of beans! They'll usually be extra energetic and sometimes this includes zoomies, throwing toys around, play growling, jumping up, wrestling, or becoming extra mouthy.

Maeva's witching hour usually occurs after breakfast right when I'm trying to get ready for work! ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

Some good management strategies are:
- Slow, calm sniffy walk
- Frozen Kong or Lickimat in crate
- Scentwork (Maeva loves searching for odours and a bonus of sniffing is it helps to calm your pup right down!)
- Foraging in a snuffle mat

What is the difference between a dog trainer and a veterinary behaviourist?

The simplest way I have found to explain the difference is something close to this...

A dog trainer is like a psychologist - we can help manage and prevent unwanted behaviours from being practiced.

A veterinary behaviourist is like a psychiatrist - they can look deeper and address the underlying cause of the unwanted behaviour.

Both are important in coming up with and managing a behaviour modification plan, and both compliment the other.

If your dog is experiencing fear, anxiety, or aggressive behaviours, it's important to seek guidance from a veterinary behaviourist as soon as possible. The quicker we can work out what is going on the better the outcome will be for all involved โค๏ธ

It's not easy being the dog that comes after a heart dog, and I was quite surprised at my difficulty to bond with this sweet puppy initially after bringing her home just over a year ago. However I feel it's important to share those feelings so others understand that it's okay to feel this way. There isn't anything wrong with you.

I truly love Maeva, and understanding my feelings early on enabled me to make certain choices, to actively work on our bond and friendship. Being aware of these emotions also allowed me to bring more patience and kindness to our relationship, as it wouldn't have been fair for me to blame her for how I was feeling. She didn't know or understand that I was still struggling with the loss of my best friend.ย

That being said, Maeva has been a huge comfort to me and become a part of my healing journey, and I am so greatful for the funny, sweet and cuddly girl I now share my life with ๐Ÿ’›

Socialisation with Amber.

Socialisation is horribly misnamed and leads many new puppy owners down the wrong path of too much interaction and not enough detachment. Socialisation is learning about normal, day to day life; becoming used to the sights, smells, sounds and experiences around us; learning that the world goes on around us and doesn't always require a response from us. What it's ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ about is interacting with every person or dog we meet.

If you have a new puppy one of the most valuable skills you can teach them is to be able to watch the world go by calmly without the need to react or interact. Hang out in different places with your puppy...at the park, outside a supermarket, in a coffee shop, at a market. Let them watch and reward calm behaviour, focus on you, disengagement from distractions. The time you spend doing this in puppyhood will repay you a thousand times over during your life with your puppy....I promise!

One of the best tools I have ever taught Maeva is to 'settle' on her mat when sent there.

It means in certain situations, such as when I need to sit down and type up your training reports! Or when we're out at a cafe satisfying our coffee addiction, I have a dog that can just chill out next to me without any hassle ๐Ÿ˜Šโ˜•

Hi everyone, I've had a few inquiries of late requesting I call them to discuss their pups and the things they need help with, and I have been met with disappointment when I've requested an email address instead. So I thought I would explain why I don't do phone calls ๐Ÿ™ƒ

1. I don't want to miss any important information that will help me write up your training plan. Having you complete my questionnaire ensures I have all the information I need and allows me to sit down and go over it more thoroughly pryor to your consult.

2. I want to make sure you have all the information you need from me (prices, qualifications, what to expect etc.) The most efficient way for me to do this is to send it to you via email.

3. It is important for me to maintain a work/life balance. Emails are the best way for me (personally) to achieve this, and I promise I will get back to you asap!

4. Phone calls make me anxious (might as well be honest!) Although I really do love talking to you about your pups, I have unfortunately been hassled in the past, and the pressure to give 'free' advice over the phone before a booking has been secured isn't fair to me or to your pups. However I do offer follow-up Zoom consultations to those who are unable to keep meeting in person.

Luckily the majority of my inquiries are from lovely, understanding individuals - and I thank you so very much for this!

The best and most efficient way to contact me is via email at [email protected] or via my page โค๐Ÿพ

Some great advice from Dr Kate ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Some great advice from Dr Kate ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Are you having trouble handling your dog? Have you had dogs all your life? Need help to figure out why your tried and tested methods of dog raising are falling flat? Is anxiety the problem?

The minimum requirement for changing your dog's behaviour is for them to feel calm enough to learn. When your dog is worried, practical learning is the first thing that shuts down in its brain. Your dog's brain is too busy identifying threats and developing a survival sequence to learn effectively. While you may be providing them with excellent information, they may not be able to receive the information. When treating anxiety, the primary goal is to improve your dog's learning ability, and an integrative approach is ideal. Healthy brains develop with good nutrition and brain exercise and sometimes need medication to kick start positive momentum.

All dogs are good dogs. No one can put their best paw forward when emotions make a run for it.

If you think your dog may be experiencing learning difficulties or anxiety, Kalmpets can help. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ—

Such a huge part of dog training and managing unwanted behaviours is to work out WHY a behaviour is occurring in the first place.

Love this post from The Perfect Puppy Co. ๐Ÿ’•

Over the last week Iโ€™ve worked with 3 dogs who Iโ€™ve referred to their vets for investigations into pain/discomfort.

They had all displayed aggressive behaviours around handling.

They all had obvious structural abnormalities in their back end.

They all displayed abnormalities in their gait & movement which suggested something was โ€˜offโ€™.

They had all been seen previously by other trainers who had advocated punishment based techniques and had not mentioned, discussed or observed any possible link between their behaviour and pain.

Three dogs in one week who have been physically punished by supposed professionals who didnโ€™t see (or chose to ignore) obvious and clear indicators of potential pain. Thatโ€™s not only heartbreaking itโ€™s also a dereliction of duty and the prioritisation of ego over empathy.

Every trainer (of any โ€˜flavourโ€™) should consider a dogโ€™s health & wellbeing as the very first step in any training plan before they even consider attempting to change behaviour. If they donโ€™t they are displaying their lack of experience & education.

Do your research. Does your prospective trainer ever discuss pain? Do they acknowledge the limitations of training if pain is left unaddressed? Do they talk about the dogโ€™s experience or only the humans? Your dog needs you to choose wisely.

There is far too much stigma around behaviour medications circulating. So I thought I'd bust some of those pesky myths!

Myth: My dog will need behaviour medications for life.

๐ŸคŽ While a small percentage of dogs will stay on behaviour medications for an extended period, most can be tapered off once we have achieved the results of behaviour modification.

Myth: Behaviour medications will change my dogs personality.

๐ŸคŽ When dosed correctly, behaviour medications have no significant effects on your dogs personality. The goal is to help them cope and live a long happy life - not to zonk them out! However there is always an adjustment period.

Myth: Behaviour medications are expensive.

๐ŸคŽ A lot of the behaviour medications used in the veterinary industry are also used to help people, if money is a bit tight check with your vet to see if they are able to write you a script, this can then be dispensed by your local pharmacy.

Myth: Giving my dog behaviour medications means I have failed.

๐ŸคŽ Being open to and aware of how your dog thinks, feels and learns makes you a wonderful guardian. Using meds to help your dog feel less anxious, stressed or unsettled makes you an even better one!

I saw sweetheart Bluey this morning ๐Ÿ’™ And I'm so proud of how far she's come!

Bluey is so lucky to have such a caring, dedicated family that's got her back and understands her needs.

They've put in the time, the training, and have built up a fantastic team of professionals to help support and guide them through managing Bluey's anxiety.

Well done team Bluey! I'm so proud of you ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

Itโ€™s ok. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

If youโ€™re stressed, or tired, or not extra motivated, itโ€™s ok.

If your mental health is in the toilet lately and you are not feeling your best, itโ€™s ok.

If you havenโ€™t walked your dog in a couple days, donโ€™t beat yourself up about it - itโ€™s ok.

If youโ€™re not feeling inspired at work right now, itโ€™s ok.

When did we all get so damn hard on ourselves? Letโ€™s take a moment and give ourselves some space and some grace to simply be. ๐Ÿฉท

Sending you lots of love. โœจ
