Somebody is still grumpy after earlier having paper strips placed in his eyes by the opthalmologist to see how his medications are working on his severe dry eye syndrome. FANTASTIC RESULTS. Schirmer Test showed 12's for each eye up from 7 & 4 last time. Before the tacrolimus strength was increased by 50 times (from 0.02% to 1%), the test results were ZERO for each eye. For general reference, 1 - 5 is considered "severe", 5 - 10 "moderately" & 10 - 15 "possible" dry eyes.

Geordi had a chip on his shoulder. but no more. Look at the dark, almost football shaped area under the R on last week's x-ray. That's just a bunch of air stuck under Geordi's skin. The puffy area was discovered after Geordi was groomed last Thursday. The trapped air wasn't a problem. How it got there might have been. Likely sources were a cut in Geordi's trachea or to a lung. X-rays showed no signs of either. The air "pocket" dissipated somewhat over the weekend; Geordi no longer had a chip on his shoulder as much of the air moved mid-way down his abdomen. Again, no sign of injury to the trachea. No broken rib which might have punctured a lung. Best guess is that a couple of weeks ago as a result of a stumble or fall that the long standing (no pun intended) arthritic, dislocated shoulder made a small tear to his trachea which has healed on its own. The vet aspirated the area (even let Geordi's foster grandpa help pull on the syringe), so very little of the air is still trapped inside Geordi. Had she not done that, the vet said the air would have been absorbed by surrounding soft tissue & disappeared over time

Climbing stairs, an impossible task for Geordi even a couple of months ago. Made possible by FHO surgery at VCA Forest South last year & months of treatment at Ready to Go Veterinary Rehabilitation in Mokena.

Are Geordi & youngster Phil discussing a curfew, politics, the finer points of demanding treats?

Getting a walk in before my fancy entropion surgery today. The ophthalmologist will make lateral incisions to my eyelids, insert some collagen & then suture them closed. The collagen should tighten the lids. My first entropion surgery didn’t keep the lashes out of my eyes because the lids were too slack.

Guess what little angel today showed his groomer at We're Nuts About Mutts his appreciation at having his feet touched by clamping his mouth on her hand. No blood. She got a good laugh out it as Geordi's teeth are worn down, lost their sharpness ages ago.

More exciting news. Geordi's rehab team at Ready to Go Vet Rehab thinks Geordi will NOT need surgery on his knee or opposite hip - not a final pronouncement, but close to it. He has graduated from 3 sessions every 2 weeks to just 1. Hoping for that to go to once/month by Feb 2024. [note: Geordi wants to go the rehab gym, aka The Treat Room, more often].

EXCITING NEWS. Yesterday at Ready to Go Vet Rehab, Geordi for the first time sat with his left leg & foot underneath him. This is the leg which has a laterally luxating patella & had FHO surgery. More appointments to come, but this is evidence that his treatment & exercises are strengthening his leg muscles enough so that further surgeries may not be necessary. Geordi doesn't understand what the fuss is about. He just wants more treats.

24/10/2023

Geordi working on strengthening the muscles in his back legs with vet tech Karina, part of today's therapy session at Ready To Go Veterinary Rehabilitation. Among his surgeries, Geordi has had FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery on his left hip. We are hoping Geordi can avoid further surgery for a lateral luxating patella & FHO on his right hip..

Geordi's first walk in the yard after FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery for a long ago left displaced hip & entropion surgery (Entropion is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid rolls inward. This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, or pigment developing on the cornea which can interfere with vision,). Geordi will be going to a rehab vet for massage therapy, cold laser treatments, low frequency sound wave therapy &, after stitches are removed, underwater treadmill work. In a few months, after the muscles on this side are strengthened, Geordi will have FHO surgery on the right side.

Our veterinary surgeon examined his work this morning & pronounced it fine. No restrictions on Geordi's walking to help strengthen his muscles. The cone stays on for 2 weeks so the eyelid stitches are not damaged.

Post surgery update, 2: Geordi is back home with his foster grandpa, segregated from the other dogs to keep his activity level low. Geordi has a recheck tomorrow morning with his surgeon.

06/09/2023

Post surgery update: Our veterinarian reports that Geordi is resting after his multiple surgeries today (entropion, both eyes; femoral head ostectomy, left leg & neuter). After a good night's rest & recheck by the vet tomorrow morning, we anticipate Geordi being released to his foster home tomorrow.

Today Geordi had his 1st appointment in a long series with Dr. Woodside at Ready to Go Veterniary Rehab to strengthen muscles prior to (hoped for) surgeries. Next week Geordi has 2 more visits scheduled for shockwave (directed soundwave) therapy, to use the underwater treadmill & to teach his foster grandpa excercises for Geordi at home. Also seeing his regular vet Monday for bloodwork to see current levels of liver enzymes.

Geordi's latest bloodwork shows his liver enzyme values half of what they were 3 weeks ago. The significant 2 are now merely 10 & 6 times the high value in the normal range, half of what they were. Treatment will continue with the next blood test scheduled for 28 August.
