I started this page in the scary days at the beginning of the pandemic/ lockdown to ask for help, and I got that help! I shy away from remembering how awful those days were. I had always thought I could provide for the animals here as long as I worked hard, but suddenly I had no income, and no way of working to replace it. Add to that the fear of what would happen to the animals if I died of covid. Dark times. I will always be hugely grateful to the people who rallied round with support--- friends, customers and complete strangers showed huge kindness and generosity. Thank you, once again, to all of you.
The boarding kennels and cattery are back to being as busy as ever and those grim days are behind us, but the whole thing has made me take stock. I have been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals for 37 years, and the kennels have been open 365 days a year all that time. It's time I stepped back a bit, so I have decided I won't be rescuing to rehome anymore. I will always rescue animals in need, but only those I have the capacity to care for here myself, for life. I need to be sure those already here have security, and that means channeling all my resources into them. I need them to have a safety net if anything like that ever happens again.
Here's a pic of Koko with a carrot stick, for no other reason than he is unbelievably awesome. 😍

What a difference from three days ago. There's enough heat in the sun today for Bannon to do a bit of sunbathing.

Lovely Pixie is still waiting to find a home of her own. She was diagnosed with diabetes last year--- that's how she landed up here looking for a new home, her owner didn't want her anymore 😔 ---and had insulin injections for a short while, but she's been injection free since July. A strict prescription diet is controlling it fine. She was a "larger lady" and the diet is suiting her. She's very sweet and affectionate. Please pm if you're interested.

Romeo spent most of the first 12 years of his life, before he came here, locked in a box, only getting out to be ridden, and occasionally breed-- he was a stallion up till he was 10. He was a really bad " crib biter" when he arrived. The horse world refer to crib biting as a "stable vice". Humans are always blaming unwanted behaviours on the animals, failing to see they have caused it. It isn't a vice it's a stereotypy--- stereotypical displacement activity that animals do to attempt to cope with an impossible situation. Polar bears swaying back and fore at the zoo, lions pacing the bars of their cage, parrots stuck in cages pulling their own feathers out-- all stereotypies. It messes with their brains and even when their lives change for a better environment they never stop altogether. He's much better than he was but here he is, 11 years later, out on 8 acres with equine companions, and he still has to do it occasionally.
His incisors are worn down to stumps and eventually, when it gets to the point where the sensitive pulp is in danger of being exposed, he will have to have them all removed. His vet and I are keeping a close eye. Humans cause so much damage even when it's not overt abuse.

Ring leader in the Destroy Heather's Car project this morning is Acorn. Acorn was ill a few months ago and caused a lot of worry so it's good to see her back to her cheeky self, so she can please herself as far as I'm concerned. Mind you, if I have to buy a new number plate it's coming out of the sheepie biscuit fund 😉😂

Season's greetings and a huge thank you to everyone who has helped, and are helping,us keep going through this difficult time. Your support, financial and otherwise, is enormously appreciated.
This is an old photo-- Tinto Kennels ' Christmas card from the year my dear Jill died-- the tan and white dog here, the GSD is her pal Misha. 1992. Adopted from Edinburgh cat and dog home in the days when they put an awful lot of dogs to sleep. It was so hard to leave with just one that day, and I can still see the faces of some left behind, but Jill was next in line to be pts so the decision was made.
She was an incredible dog. Got me through some very hard times and started me on the rescuing road I've followed ever since. I miss her, and all the others, so much, but I'm so glad I've known them.

My kind, and very talented friend, Ginny Hay, has been making beautiful sun catchers and beaded bells to sell to support the rescued animals here. I have some of these in my windows and they never cease to raise my spirits when the sun shines and rainbows dance round the room.

This is Ergot. An extremely toxic fungus which grows on grains and grass seed heads. Apparently it's a really bad year for it, and unfortunately my winter grazing is badly affected. Everyone is crammed into the small bare paddock that the horses are on in the summer to limit their weight gain, and my lovely big field of luscious grass, which the sheep normally have access to all year round, and the horses in winter, is unusable.
Everyone with grass for grazing animals please be aware. It only grows on seed heads, so if you have long grass that's gone to seed please check for ergot.
Mike Swindells of Perfect Pastures has come to my rescue--thank you!!-- and is currently topping the field and will come back next week to harrow it, but it will not be useable for several weeks, and I will have to monitor everyone very carefully in case there is any left that they can eat.

This is Pixie. She has a wonderful sweet nature and, as you can see, is very beautiful, but when she was diagnosed with diabetes her owners didn't want her anymore, so she has come here to find a human who deserves her. She was on twice daily insulin injections for a while but now that she's lost weight she's stable on just a very strict diet of diabetic prescription food, which will need to continue for the rest of her life. It's possible that she may go back to needing insulin injections, so her new human needs to be comfortable with that, and will also need to be vigilant for any changes in her and take her to the vet for monthly blood sugar tests just to be sure she's not tipping back to full blown diabetes.
It's a big ask but hopefully there's a special person somewhere for this dear, sweet cat. She's 12 years old and has a lot of love to give.
