Hello everyone! ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏽 APC will be closed today, on Wednesday June 19th 2024 to honor Juneteenth. Take this day to remember that Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day! Juneteenth is a this monumental event celebrated every year to honor the Emancipation Day and freedom of all enslaved African American people. Freedom came on June 19, 1865, and on that date all African American enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. Juneteenth is a reminder of our countries history and is an inspiration to all African Americans and empowers us all to transform our lives and our country for the better.
Even though Americans had been freed all across the country, some people were not. African Americans are still fighting for freedom everyday and were secretly kept as enslaved servants, even up until 1961. Survivors like Mae Louise Miller lived in slavery until 1961 with her family. Miller’s father Cain Wall lost his own farmland after he signed a contract that he could not read which indebted him to a local plantation owner. Mae recounted first running away at 9 years old, but she was returned to the farm by her brothers, where her father told her that if she ran away, “they’ll kill us.” After their freedom Mae went on to get married and adopted children of her own. Americans must never forget our history, for most of it is still very recent. This is why we remember Juneteenth, to honor all of its people who have been impacted and had their lives stolen.
