Happy International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day!

Dog owners and veterinary teams know that treats can be a great training aid, an important component of a nutritious diet, and a way to show love to your pet. Did you know that PNA's Calorie Calculator (for cats too!) includes an option to include a treat allotment? You can calculate exactly how much to feed your pet, including 10% of daily calories from treats, to keep your pet at a healthy weight while not having to worry about overfeeding treats.

Use the calculator here: https://petnutritionalliance.org/resources/calorie-calculator?type=dogs

While some pet owners may feel that some extra weight may help their pet feel warmer in dropping temperatures, it's important to keep your pet at a healthy weight year-round, including winter. The health risks associated with overfeeding outweigh any potential benefits. You can read more about cold weather pet safety from the AVMA here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/cold-weather-animal-safety

Talk to your veterinarian about your pet's nutritional needs during the winter, and use our calorie calculator tool to get an idea of how much you should be feeding your pet based on their current body condition: https://petnutritionalliance.org/resources/calorie-calculator?type=dogs

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild.

Food is a notable source of infection for cats, most often raw or undercooked meat and unpasteurized milk.

To keep their cats safe, owners should refrain from feeding cats any dairy products or colostrum that have not first been pasteurized or thoroughly cooked to kill the virus. They should also thoroughly cook meat before feeding, and avoid feeding raw meat-based treats or diets.
