For many New Zealanders, the idea of a dog spending their lives tethered in one place is unthinkable. In fact, we've had many of you reach out to us after seeing something like this, in hopes there is some legal recourse to help.
Unfortunately, until now, there hasn't been. Animal welfare inspectors repeatedly receive calls about dogs suffering from long-term confinement or tethering, but Aotearoa’s laws and regulations are letting these dogs down. Inspectors have no power to intervene unless the dog has physical wounds.
However, this could be set to change – but we need your help. The Government is taking submissions on a set of proposed regulations that would fix this gap in our laws and give animal welfare inspectors more tools when they find dogs in inhumane conditions.
There are six proposed regulations on the cards, and we are urging MPI to implement all of them. Adding your voice to our call could make all the difference for dogs suffering on chains.
