A chart created using data from almost 50 deer trackers from around the country shows why bowhunters shouldn't aim at a deer's shoulder.

Hunters! Did you know that a well trained tracking dog does not need blood or sign on the ground to find your mortally hit deer? Most hunters refer to our dogs as “blood trackers” when in fact the dog is building a complete scent profile off the intended target animal. Unseen blood, hair, skin cells, saliva, unseen gut particles and in whitetails interdigital pheromones is what a dog is triggering on. In most cases a big blood trail is not good news for you the hunter! Most shoulder shot or muscle hit deer will bleed for a long ways but will settle down and quit putting out interdigital pheromones that indicate a mortal hit, the dog will quit tracking before the blood trail ends! When hiring a tracker, please interview them! If they are concerned about amount of blood or if rain has ”washed” out the blood, they may not be the tracking team to trust to recover your trophy!
This is the Matt Talkington buck from Wetzel County, WV. This deer went almost 1000 yards, cutback on its trail and left 10 drops of blood smaller than a dime on that 1000 yards. Jesse was nose down the whole way!

The results of our Annual Survey are in! Thank you to all the trackers who have responded and a big thank you to Lindsay Ware who conducted the survey. We are so proud of the difference our trackers are making and their impact on hunting communities.

What do you do in the off-season?
Some of us run our hounds in Field Trials and some of us test our pups. These are awesome ways of keeping our pups tuned up! It can benefit the team because handlers get to read their pup’s body language in a less stressful situation! Attending tracking seminars is another way to stay in shape. What do you do?

Did you know this? Shared by Wounded Whitetails Tracking & Recovery

Fun fact! This is what we train our dogs to track. This is the interdigital gland on a deer. A lot of people think they are trained to track blood. Blood does help and they can smell it along with other scents. But we get calls a lot of the time when blood runs out. This is why we train them to track this gland. Each deer has there own specific scent from this gland. I like to think of it like our fingerprint. This is how the dog knows to stay on the deer we are tracking and not another deer that may have crossed the track.
