Another week, another history lesson on a popular dog breed! This week, we will be looking into the history of the Chihuahua!

1. The origin of the chihuahua traces back to 950 CE. The Chihuahua is a descendent of the Techichi, the companion dog of the ancient Toltecs.
2. The Chihuahua receives its namesake from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Also known as "The Big State" and "The Great State," Chihuahua is Mexico's largest state with an area of 95,543 square miles.
3. Centuries-old folklore tells that Chihuahuas can cure asthma by absorbing the condition from their owners. While there's no evidence supporting this theory, many people kept Chihuahuas around for this very reason.

This week we will learn about the history of the Dachshund!

1. Don’t be disguised by the Dachshunds’ cute face, as they are actually fierce hunters. The little dogs were bred 300 years ago in Germany to hunt badgers—their name literally means “badger hound” (dachs means badger; hund means dog).

2. Dachshunds were associated with Germany during World War I because they were used in a lot of propaganda. This led to a decline in the breed's popularity in America. Fortunately, after the war was over, American Kennel Club rebranded Dachshunds as “liberty pups”, and gained back their reputation.

3. The 1972 Munich Olympic Games was the first time that it had an official mascot. And guess what the first official Olympics mascot was! It was an adorable Dachshund named Waldi. Olympic officials actually plotted that year's marathon route in the shape of a Dachshund as well.
