Penny, our 29-yr-old Welsh Mountain Pony sadly had to be put-to-sleep today. She was still running around like a 2-yr-old on Sunday night but fell ill on Monday morning & despite surgery, we had to sadly say goodbye, just a few weeks after her partner, Jay passed. She had internal bleeding which could not be stopped despite the best efforts of the wonderful team at Cotts Farm Equine Hospital . Penny was a force-of-nature, ruling the roost over everyone here including our darling Jay & Nero who, against all odds is the last man standing, so to speak. Penny came to us with Jay via the superb Greenacres Rescue who took her in from a previous owner, after she had been sold at auction in 2013 for the sum of £31.50 ! She was a lovely girl, and we'll all miss her terribly - even Nero !

Started 2024 where we left 2023, tending to another very poorly sheep. We came out this morning to find 7.5 yr old Tommy, stuck on his side & unable to stand. He went on to have several fits before a vet arrived who diagnosed a likely neurological episode of some kind. With the help of several injections & dosing with fluids & glucose, we seem to have kept him with us for a while longer, at least. N will stay/sleep with the sheep tonight just in case he relapses but for now he's quiet and resting with his mum, dad & siblings.

Another sad time for us as, just 3 weeks after losing Jay & Georgie, we had to say our final farewells to Tiny, one of our elderly ladies. She had been struggling to bend down to graze for a while now but this last week or two, we often found her on her side, unable to get up without our help. Her head and neck had become turned to one side too which made it difficult for Tiny to walk in a straight line. We thought it was her arthritis but it turned out there was a mass on one side of her neck.

Tiny was always very nervous of humans and despite nothing but love and kindness from us, she never fully got over the trauma of her younger days at the hands of farmers. However, she always knew where to come for food and in her final weeks, she seemed to understand that we were helping her and she became much more trusting, and actually seemed to enjoy being stroked. Despite the fact that she was relatively low in the pecking order of the flock, she was a born fighter & would take anyone on! She led a little troop of 'special needs' girls (Choccy, Jayney & Coco) & she had her "little" 7.5 year old girl, Rene (aka We**ie) with her until her very last moments. Tiny would have been 14-15 years old in our estimation and we will miss her so much. Rest in peace, darling girl, we'll never forget you. 💚💚
