♥️Winnie and George♥️
Winnie and George are a 3 year old brother and sister. They were meant to be released as juveniles but the person who was supposed to release them never did. 3 years later the pair were brought to me to release. I immediately knew something was wrong with Winnies mouth. She's a bad case of malloclusion. Her top right tooth grows very fast and curves straight back towards her throat. She requires bi weekly trimmings to survive. The loving bond these two share is beyond words. This is how they spend most of their days after running and playing with each other. I couldn't bear to separate the two, George probably wouldn't leave her anyway so they live a spoiled life together in an 8x8x8 outdoor release cage. ♥️

***FINAL UPDATE****
I am devastated. After the call from the doctor about her doing well the assistant called 5 minutes later, her heart had stopped 3 times, she wouldnt breathe on her own and we lost her. 😭 I was so hopeful after that first call now im sitting here wondering what more i could've done to catch her sooner, that maybe things wouldve worked out differently, Blaming myself that i shoulve or couldve done more but it wouldn't have mattered, they said she had an aggressive form of cancer and nothing we could've done would have saved her. She died peacefully and with no pain and definitely knowing she was loved and that we were trying to help her! Shes running free in heaven now! Im sorry i didnt have better news. Thank each and every one of you for your loving thoughts and prayers and Special thanks to Becky Goodman of Secret Squirrel Wildlife Rehabilitation in Gainesville fl., she went above and beyond to help us save this beautiful little soul and Tammy Markham who helped me catch her and has been there for me every minute! We stopped on the way home and picked up a beautiful, red drift rose bush to plant on her grave. We love you Rosie!😭

OUT OF SURGERY AND IT WENT WELL! She's in recovery now and she still has an intact eye!!! Thank you Jesus!!!🥰
New pic below.
**UPDATE**
WE CAUGHT HER YESTERDAY!
I realized who she was after we caught her. Her name is Rosie. She was a rescue and released. She was 4 weeks old when a tree trimmer cut into their nest. We received her and her two sisters with wounds. We got them all healed and raised then released.
She is in rough shape. We brought her to Becky Goodman of Secret Squirrel Wildlife Rehabilitation in Gainesville fl. Becky is amazing and very knowledgeable with squirrels. She has 3 abcess sites on her left side of her face. Most likely from hawk talons. The infection has been there so long it's calcified and hardened. She's got her on a slew of antibiotics and painkillers. She did as much cleaning up and debriding as she could but the little girl needs Veterinarian care. We did a 3 way call with Dr Alicia Emerson who is the best squirrel vet in the country. We're going to pick her up and bring her to Dr.E in the morning. Becky said it's the worst injury she's ever seen and she's literally seen thousands but she also said she's the sweetest girl and best patient shes ever had as well! Becky will also do the after care until she's all healed. Rosie is one tough cookie and she's a fighter! She's had a rough life from day one but after this is done she'll have an easy one. Dr. Emerson's office is setting up an account for her if anyone would like to donate and help with her medical treatment costs. It's Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic in Port Orange Florida.
Phone # 386-788-1550
Under the name Tammy Markham and the squirrel name "Rosie"
They can and will take a donation over the phone. God bless you all and from the bottom of our hearts, Thank you all for your prayers, your caring and donations!
New pictures added.

Please pray for this baby! She's one of our releases from a year ago. Sent the pics to a vet, she said it looks like a hawk tried to grab her and punctured her eye. Now it's infected. We've been trying and trying to catch her so we can get her treatment but have had no luck yet. 😭

Squirrels play a significant role in urban environments, often serving as important members of the local ecosystem. Here's a discussion on their role:

1. Seed Dispersal: Squirrels are natural seed dispersers. As they forage for food, they often bury nuts and seeds in various locations. Some of these buried seeds eventually sprout into new plants, contributing to the growth and diversity of vegetation in urban areas. This seed dispersal helps maintain green spaces and forests within city limits.

2. Tree Health: Squirrels have a natural instinct to gnaw on objects to keep their teeth trimmed. In urban environments, this behavior can sometimes lead to damage to trees, as squirrels may chew on bark or branches. While excessive damage can be detrimental to individual trees, moderate gnawing can stimulate new growth and improve overall tree health.

3. Pest Control Squirrels are omnivorous and consume a variety of food items, including insects and small rodents. In urban areas, they may help control insect populations by feeding on pests like beetles, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. By naturally regulating insect populations, squirrels contribute to pest control efforts in parks, gardens, and green spaces.

4. Educational Opportunities: Observing squirrels in urban environments provides valuable educational opportunities for residents, especially children. Watching squirrels engage in behaviors such as foraging, nest-building, and social interactions can foster an appreciation for wildlife and encourage environmental stewardship among urban dwellers.

5. Cultural Significance: Squirrels have become iconic symbols of urban wildlife, featuring prominently in literature, art, and popular culture. Their presence adds to the charm and character of urban landscapes, enriching the cultural fabric of cities.

Overall, squirrels play a multifaceted role in urban environments, contributing to biodiversity, ecological balance, and the overall well-being of urban ecosystems. Their presence enriches the urban experience and underscores the importance of coexisting with wildlife in cities.

Release babies 🥰

13/02/2024

Well we let the babies go again today and had a good day playing and exploring! I think they got worn out and went back in for a nap. One of the girls has already claimed the double wide house we put up the other day!

11/02/2024

Well we tried to release the 4 girls today from Hurricane Idalia. Three came out and explored, one stayed in her nest. Our day was cut short by a nasty hawk trying to get an easy meal. We scared it off with bottle rockets and Thank God all three babies are safe, they ran straight back into their nests in the release cage. We'll try again another day!
