Let's talk about Nona! She is a sweetheart mare that we have absolutely loved getting to know in the time we've had her here with us.

Nona has had a hard for the last couple months. It had become clear that she needed some extra attention in May when she began losing some weight. We moved her out to a larger pasture where she would have more abundant grass and room to roam, but that soon proved to be a bad idea. Nona did not thrive after the move, in fact, we thought due to the other horses in the new pasture she was being picked on. (As expected for a new horse being put into a herd) we had made sure to keep her pasture buddy with her from previous area but did not seem to help. After about a week and half of that with no signs of change her condition only seemed to worsen believing stress to be the cause of that. Then we proceeds to take her and her companion out to be in their own large open range...no other horses to bother her and plenty of good forage. Another week or 2 goes by and still no better, even worse now she is constantly peeing, squirting actually. So now im getting really concerned. At this point I decided to call in the vet. She had been thoroughly been vet checked, floated and all others less then a year ago so anything serious was not at all something we'd been concerned with up until this point.

Nona had a bladder infection. 10 days uniprim and all should be better. Not quite...still peeing constantly. Never fully emptying bladder and hind end is constantly soaked. Not good! So I take her back in...we do an ultrasound and find a very large mass on the bladder. We were then referred to Dr Speer at Equine Surgery and Medicine, where we did a more detailed ultrasound and found that she had a bladder stone that was over 6.4cm (that's more than 3") in size.. it is most likely causing all the stress that she has been under for this entire ordeal. In order to remove it, it would have to be broken apart and removed surgically. Doc says he'd never seen one this large, who know how long she has been growing this think without anyone knowing. Anyhow, we decided that she is worth the surgery expense and although she is 25-26 years old she is no doubtbworth the expense of this. There's no comparison.

Dr Speer opted to keep here there until we could run some bloodwork to make sure she was not in renal failure, because if she was there would be no way to save her. Good news, bloodwork came back good. Doc performed her surgery the same afternoon and sent me photos of the stone (broken to pieces) and I couldn't believe it. Said she did great and to let her recover dor a few days before we bring her back. We picked her up 2 days later and she has been completing another round of post op antibiotics and so far she is recovering so well. We are very hopeful that she will continue to get better and praying that she feels so much relief now. I feel absolutely terrible that I didn't insist on getting her checked long before.

We will continue to monitor her improvement and soon will have her checked with chiropractor since her last check showed she's possibly needing some adjustment in the hips. August I will have her checked for cushings and pray she doesn't have that buy if she does....we will deal. I know how to treat that and she can live an amazing and active life with it as long as she continues staying on top of it. Let's pray that's not gonna be the case though.

Ps...did I mention that Dr. Speer saved the stone for me? He kept it refrigerated in a zip lock and gave it to me to keep...lol I think I found my favorite vet.😂
100% recommended, no doubt!

Also thanks to Dr Mikaela in El Dorado for finding this issue and being so wonderful with our girl.

We had some of our very favorite volunteers come out over the weekend. Muddy Creek 4-H Club Cowley County Kansas brought out their hard working crew and got down to business. It's always a treat when these kids (and adults) come out to show their love and support for our cause. We got 2 feed rooms cleaned up, tack cleaned and our tack rooms organized (again). Just in time for spring.

We absolutely love our little community and are so blessed to be a part of it.

Thanks again guys! See you in June😁

Today is certainly a cold one and gonna get much worse before it.gets better in the next several days. I am so thankful that we got the heaters plugged in to all the waters. Plenty of hay and blankets for those of our herd that don't do well with the cold. Grateful for all the preparations that had been made coming up to this cold snap.

We had such a fun day with some pretty great families coming to visit us. Miss Nona was so great with all the littles today. Thanks to everyone that came out to support our mission.

We will be doing this "Christmas with a Rescue" fundraiser again next Friday if you would like to come out to get a fun photo with one of our residents.

Happy adoption day to KitKat and Big Bonnie!

We are so happy to see them go to a home with a big family that will keep these girls busy. They will be close enough that we can pop in to visit often, that makes it easier.

We are sure gonna miss the beautiful girls🩷

Today was another spectacular volunteer filled day with a great group of students from Douglass High School coming out to knock out some much needed projects around the rescue! We had 10 students and 2 teachers volunteer their time, energy and fun personalities to us for a day. I cannot express how much we appreciate all the hard work this group showed.

It's been a cold several days and we had to break out the blankets. A few of our herd do not take the cold well at all and this was pretty intense for them. The first cold snap is always the hardest and this was no exception.

Good Saturday morning all you beautiful people! We certainly hope to find you all well and in good places.

We have a lot to catch up on and I will try to get all the information out as soon as I can with certainty. There is a tremendous amount of change and movement happening around here so please bear with me as we make these transitions.

Fact #1-Rescue location is changing (we're moving)

Fact #2-Adoptions are in the works😁🥰

Fact #3-We are so very grateful for our friends and neighbors who have been so wonderful and generous with their time and donations! Thank you

I will give more information as I can but for the time being I (Stephanie) am still very much in a transition of my own and still working very hard to get back on my feet (literally) since my medical situation occurred. I'll try very hard to post more here, I've just had a tremendous load on my plate lately and FB isn't big on that priority list.

Ps....Meet Nona our newest member and incredibly sweet but spoiled mare that came to us as a surrender 3 weeks ago.

As many of you all know, I (Stephanie) have been dealing with some serious medical "stuff" in the last week. This has resulted in me being 100% unable to do my daily duties caring for all the animals here at the ranch.

I would like to send a tremendous shout-out and thank you to our Wonderful volunteers who have so graciously stepped up and taken initiative to do what needs done. These folks have taken the task of coordinating daily feeding, grooming, well checks, stall/barn cleaning and even power washing our barn to take the pressure off me while I'm down with this injury.

It's not easy work, it's dirty and hot and sweaty and sometimes smelly and frustrating but I miss every moment of it. Iwill be out for quite some time and these folks have careers and families and some have more than 1 other job they go to. They will need help to fill in gaps here and there. We need more good volunteers that can be relied upon for smaller odd and end tasks that i can't do right now (or for 8 more weeks)

These great people are 100% volunteers, I can't pay them (except sometimes in fresh eggs or baked goods) but they come out nonetheless.

If you know some great dependable people looking to give back please send them our way. I have a head volunteer ready to take on the task of training and scheduling but this week is the only whole week she can be here every single day to train. I wish upon everything that we weren't in this spot but we are and all I can do is ask for help.

If you're interested in my story it's on my personal fb page and honestly I don't think I can write it all out again. Please follow it there if you want..

Thank you for your prayers and well wishes they are all so very much appreciated! Please help us find good honest and reliable volunteers.

Some of the raccoons are starting to get huge! They are sleeping a lot during the day and becoming more fearful of everyone except me. This tells me that they will be ready for release on time. If you found one of these cute babies this spring and fell in love with taking care of it, just know it won’t be little and cute forever🤣.

I often get calls in the spring and late summer from people who raised babies and now their sweet, cuddly baby is trapping them in the bathroom, being aggressive over the food bowl, challenging the family dog, and living in the couch cushions🥴. Sadly, I can’t help with these adult raccoons because I have babies I’m trying to get ready for release. That adult won’t be nice to me (I’m not mom), and it won’t be nice to my babies because it doesn’t know it’s one of them. I don’t have the extra space to house adult raccoons and teach them how to be raccoons (because they hate me). So, when you call me and I tell you I can’t help you, then please be nice. I am not getting paid by anyone to do this, and making me feel guilty for not helping you will only make me grumpy. I KNOW how sweet, cuddly, and needy these babies are! If they made good pets, everyone would have one including me!

What a fantastic opportunity we had today! Meeting and networking with all these wonderful horse people has been such a fun time. I got to meet some pretty great business owners and volunteers from other equine based businesses and I learned a tremendous amount from the great speakers that were here.

We had several raffle prizes and I'll be calling all the winners very shortly!

Thanks again Audra for the invite to take part in today's Expo.

Eve is the gal who started Double G...... she will have been here 2 years on the 28th of April this year. She has not been handled much and will need to be 100% started from scratch! Had a foal 9 days after her arrival here and was an absolutely amazing mama and has begun to trust us ( me and many of our volunteers) enough to let us give some few pets here and there..... she is about 6-8 years of age and technically has yet been unhandled. If I had a "Trainer"on staff we would certainly have a different story here but it is what it is.

Eve is so very curious that she will leave you confused....I promise. She's roughly 14.1hh and so curious and eager to llearn. She seems cowy and darn athletic to boot!

This big gal is Black Beauty "BB" and she is just that! Saddlebred gated mare that stands 16hh and at 21 years of age still has all the health and energy she had 15 years ago we're sure. She is an easy keeper and rides beautifully.

BB is perfect for an intermediate/experienced rider as she knows her size and can be pushy at times. She needs someone that is confident and will keep her busy.
She has been sitting for about a year not Ridden and she's needing to get back out there.

BB is an Alpha here and she bonds quite quickly with geldings. She does fine with mares as well as long as they respect her status as alpha.

UTD on vaccines, hooves and wormer! Her registration papers go along with her new family.
