A Service Dog may not always wear a vest. If a dog approaches you and acts like it wants you to follow it, it could be a service dog trying to get its handler help. The TikTok below shows a service dog trained to seek help from the closest person when her handler needs help.

Another question in our training inbox asking if we know where to "register" their dog as a service animal so they can rent a particular house.

Instead of (unethically) "registering" your dog as a service animal, why don't you invest some time into actually training your dog to be a solid citizen? You'd be surprised how many private landlords appreciate a pet résumé and three little letters (CGC) may make all the difference.

MK Odin loves to work. We call him worky boy. Given the opportunity to eat or work, he would choose (and has chosen!) work. We are learning a new behavior together.

It's a combination of sit or down, come, slow, heel, halt. 😯

Okay, I call it "service." And eventually I will be able to video it 🤣

I put Odin in a down or a sit (stay is obligatory.) I then walk, with my back away from him, various steps (never the same number because he counts.) I then tell him "service" at either a stand (while still walking) or as a crouch (mimicking falling.) He shoots up beside me, run his head and neck under my hand, until his collar or leash is able to be felt and grabbed before as we continue to walk (he at a heel) until a halt.

It seemed like a fun and challenging behavior to teach him as well : a combination of multiple behaviors all culminating into one.

And, no surprise, he loves it and finds it's a fun task to learn.

"Why do you love German Shepherds / working line German Shepherds?"
Three times. That's how long it took him to learn it (with distractions -his ball, intact male dog across the street being a jerk, roaming country dog, cars, neighbor working outside...)

This goodest girl, Aspen, and her owners/handler, Skylar, passed their AKC S.T.A.R. puppy class today. Congratulations!

(Because of COVID, we had to make some changes along with pupdates from the owner regarding interacting with other dogs and people.)

Our next round of classes will be mid-Summer.

Training Tip of the day:

Meet or exceed your puppy or dog's energy level.

If you find yourself with a puppy or dog who is less than amused with you when you are trying to work with him or her, it's because you're boring. You may not be boring, but to your canine pupil, you are boring. The leaves in the trees, the blowing grass, the birds on the wire...are all much more exciting than you.

How do you fix that? 🤷🏼‍♀️

You have to meet or exceed their energy level so YOU are the most exciting and interesting thing in his or her world.

I still remember a training friend telling me, "it's okay to act completely crazy and animated when working with your dog."

Remember when we were in school? We learned more and enjoyed classes with the animated teachers. The teachers who stood in one spot with a single toned voice reading from the text made it difficult to learn or enjoy the class.

So be crazy. It's okay.

It was either frozen or muddy ground so we went over to where our travel trailer is parked to use the concrete patio for Puppy Class today.

Today, Aspen learned how to walk nicely on a leash with some "leave it" distractions added to the mix.

Dock Diving events registration has opened for some of the first events of the season!

North America Diving Dogs has opened up some event registrations on their website for the 2021 dock diving season!

We are signed up for a Memorial Day weekend event with Chestnut Hills Dog Sports already and have reminders set up for additional events.

Odin has 8 jumps qualifying for his DJA title leg and needs an additional 22. I don't think we will be able to reach that this season, but we can try!

If you're interested in dock diving with your dog, let us know! We can point you in the right direction for training for the sport as well as great events for your first try!

COVID-19 has helped many people find the time to adopt or foster a new family member, but here is something to keep in mind: some of you are at home ALL the time. This makes for a great set up for puppies, but you have to make sure you aren't promoting separation anxiety.

Normally, we would've gone out and about to grocery stores and other shops, but with COVID-19, we are limiting our exposure, and some of us are sheltering in place 100%. Be sure you are working on crate/kennel training with your puppy. Put he or she in their kennel, and go outside for an extended period of time. Mimic "running to the store." Let him or her out of their kennel when you return AND they calm down in their kennel. Reward he or she when you let them out. Keep their kennel/crate accessible and open-door to ease the transition.

By performing mock "store runs," you can help limit separating anxiety when life returns back to normal.

Did you know that your puppy or dog does not have to be an American Kennel Club (AKC) registered purebred dog to participate in some AKC events and training programs? That's right!

The AKC has two programs that allow owners of non-registered purebred or non-purebred dogs to participate in activities the AKC offers. This is GREAT news if you ever wanted to take a class or have fun with your dog (especially rescues!) in sporting events!
