What I’ve learned for riding only unfinished horses for two years:
Just because they had a good run doesn’t mean it’ll stick. Horses will usually improve and then take a few steps back. And maybe even side to side.
The faster you go, the more problems you will find and need to correct. Sure, my run was perfect when I loped it. But guaranteed, adding speed brings out their flaws. They aren’t used to the speed, it takes time.
People will look at you at every show and will say “wow! They’re making progress”, and see you at the next and say “what the hell was that?”. It happens. Don’t let it get to you.
In the end, breaking, training, and finishing your horse is QUITE the journey. It’s probably one of the most rewarding things people take for granted when they finally become finished and consistent.
I forgot how hard it was and how discouraging it can be. But no matter what. You CANNOT let yourself forget the reward of finishing your horse.

The Jazz Concept over the last 4 weeks has been making big strides of improvement (literally). He went from being unconfident, frustrated, and anticipating, to making 4 confident and solid barrel runs this past weekend ❤️ it’s amazing to see the difference in just a month time. Going from not placing to literally being too fast for some divisions within a month! I am so proud! 🤠

Excited to have 5 1/2 year old The Jazz Concept by my side at shows this year! Catch us in Centreville MI on Saturday!❤️

Jazz was hurt in the beginning of March in 2022. We found it was a suspensory tear and we were concerned that he might not make an appearance back into the sport. After 7 long months of mostly stall rest and rehab, he was cleared to ride again. He was able to go lope a pattern in October to close out our year of racing. We are very excited to see what he has in store for us in the 2023 racing season!

Surround yourself with people who practice good horsemanship. Support associations who support good horsemanship. Your riding WILL get better and so will your outlook on the sport. When you see someone beating up their horse at a public event, it brings EVERYONE down. Don’t support people or associations who think it’s ✨okay✨. In your gut, you know it’s not. Be patient. Be kind. Be mindful that you are working with an animal, not a machine. Help others when they need it. Surround yourself with good people. Speak up against the bad in the sport or else there will never be change.
