The new USDA regulations, 300 or so pages we must know about and follow.

It covers every aspect of animal welfare and from this we are required to formalize documents for a plan of veterinary care, a plan for animal enrichment and a disaster and emergency plan.

These plans get inspected annually by unannounced federal inspections, as well as all our facilities and procedures.

We are required to have an annual vet inspection which is also documented, and we are required to keep very accurate records of all animals, where they come from and who they go to, along with copies of all the USDA forms required for anyone selling primates.

In addition, here in Florida we also have Florida Wildlife Commission who have all their rules and regulations with which we must also comply, and who also do unannounced inspections.

As well as many of the same aspects as the USDA regulations, Florida wildlife commission require that we get things like import permits for animals coming into the state and we ensure that all Florida owners have permits before we sell them a monkey.

This is before we even get to the expense and complexity of complying with all of this, and then add the fact that some monkeys are incredibly hard to breed or even to pair up, and this answers the question why they are so expensive...

It's also why if you buy from a legitimate breeder you know the standards which we have to meet.

It's why you can be pretty sure the closest that the nice guy who's offering you a monkey on social media for $450 has ever got to seeing a monkey, is the online pictures he's stolen from people like us, to scam you.

And it's likely why if you were unfortunate enough to buy a monkey and it died within just a few weeks, that you don't have any of the official USDA paperwork, genuine health certificates or other documentation that you should have from a legitimate breeder following the rules.
