What is on your list for February? This is a great time to service your garden tools if you haven't already prepared them for winter! Going through your regular tools and making sure they are ready for the upcoming season is one thing you can do in the slower time and make sure you are ready for the busy season. Clean, sharpen and oil them and you'll be ready to go! Maybe put some old newspaper (what's that) under your tools when cleaning them up to protect work surfaces.

Today is Salsa making day in my kitchen! I used tomatoes and peppers from my garden to make this amazing salsa.

Normally I use ‘Mrs. Wages’ salsa seasoning packets, but I decided I wanted to make my salsa from scratch without a seasoning packet. Now don’t get me wrong ‘Mrs. Wages’ salsa mix is really good, but I wanted to expand my skill set.

I’ve read scores of salsa recipes in books and online. I didn't see exactly what I wanted completely so this is what I've come up with! The good news is it passed my husband’s taste test :)

Here's another post on preserving vegetables from your garden: Our family loves corn year round and prefer the method of blanching, then cutting off the kernels and putting in ziploc freezer bags, and freezing. We feel this method keeps the flavor better. Each person has their own favorite method!

It's that time of the year! What can beat a homegrown tomato sandwich? Just slather a good helping of mayo on two slices of bread, cut some nice thick slices of fresh tomato, add a little salt and pepper, plus your choice of any additional seasonings (like oregano or Italian seasoning), and your good to go! A little bacon and lettuce won't hurt. That is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time! It's hard to beat! Tell me about your favorite garden foods in the comments below!

I love the taste (and smell) of smoked meat! Even thinking about it makes me hungry. Here a few ideas to get you thinking about economical ways to get that flavor into your meat. There's many options. I'll simply point out to use your best judgment and consider the effects of the heat on whatever material you use when building a smoker. Some materials could produce undesirable flavors or other unhealthy polutants when heated.

Smoking is a slow cooking method that has been used for generations. Smokers can get pricey, but with a bit of creativity, you can build your own DIY smoker.
