Mr. Adorable sees a lot of people unsure of how to prepare for this year's hurricane season. While this year isn't supposed to be as bad as last year, it only takes one storm to make it a memorable season and to be bad for someone. We decided to compile a list of what we think is the bare minimum to get through a storm safely. Obviously everyones situation is different so there may be other things you need like a generator for someone on oxygen or a generator plus a window air conditioner for people and pets who can't handle the heat. If anyone needs help navigating their specific situation, feel free to reach out and we can try to find solutions to your specific needs
https://a.co/d/9yAhXiB water storage. This is an aquapod. It goes into your bathtub and gives you a bathtub amount of water that is enclosed to prevent contamination and reduce drowning risk. It comes with a really terrible pump that at least works. If it's in the budget, highly recommended a battery operated pump. Harbor freight has them for like $12
https://a.co/d/3AvwHiV cooking. We saw a lot of people had trouble cooking last year. This requires a 1 lb propane tank or a butane cartridge. While I've seen them used inside they are not rated to be indoor safe. I prefer propane over butane ever since a friend of mine had a butane canister explode in his face
https://a.co/d/6QUQafD lighting. You obviously need to be able to see at night. Candles aren't really safe, especially if you have pets. This will at least let you see in every room.
https://a.co/d/4tOjY2g fire blanket. You may not have running water, yoour fire extinguisher might be expired or just fail. You're working with open flames more since you don't have electricity. Please don't make a hurricane worse by burning your house down.
https://a.co/d/11oiFY4 cooler. No everyone can afford a generator to keep their fridge working. A cooler with ice will keep your food as safe as it would be in a refrigerator as long as it has ice in it. Make sure to pre cool these before a storm if at all possible
https://a.co/d/4F3OP52 phone charger. Honestly this might not even help if the cell towers go down so definitely make friends with someone who has Starlink. Regardless, having a way to charge things is always great.
Have enough non perishable food and water for your family including your pets to last at least 3 days but 2 weeks is recommended. Foods can include soups, canned meals like beef stew and spaghettios and remember any special dietary requirements.
Cash, small bills. At least enough to put gas in your vehicle.
Things we didn't add because they're nice to have but not super required, a weather radio, portable fan, "wag bags"(emergency toilet bags with the chemical). Not super necessary if you store enough water but if we get too much rain and the septic can't take more or if the city sewer can't handle more flushing, it's nice to have. Battery operated shower, some even have sprayers for dishes. Portable power station and solar panel, again, not really necessary but kind of awesome if you have one since it can charge fans and handheld gaming units. Plenty more but most people don't go that far with it.
