New Report Claims That Covid-19 Pandemic Pet Adoptions Make People Feel Happier

The Covid 19 pandemic has changed our lives in more ways than most of us realize. Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of the pandemic has been isolation.

In order to overcome isolation as safely as possible, many people have turned to adopting a pet, either temporarily or permanently.

Rover.com recently spoke with 1000 pet owners in an online poll. More specifically, they were looking for people who brought a new pet into their home since the pandemic started last March.

66% of those who took part in the poll already had a dog or cat in their home but brought a new pet in during the pandemic. 13% said that it was their only pet.

The type of pet that was adopted is also favoring dogs to a great extent. 53% of those who were surveyed adopted a dog in the last 12 months and 32% adopted a cat. Interestingly, 14% adopted both a dog and a cat in the last 12 months.

64% of those who adopted an animal in the last 12 months got them from a rescue group or nonprofit (40%), or another family (24%). 26% said that they got the animal from a breeder.

As any pet owner can tell you, there is some adjustment that is necessary when you bring a new animal into the home. One adjustment is financial, and 54% of those surveyed said they had to adjust their budget to care for the new pet.

Perhaps the most interesting of all the statistics is that 93% of those who were polled by Rover.com said that the pet improved their physical and/or mental well-being over the past year. 80% said that working from home during the pandemic was more enjoyable because of the pet.

10-Year-Old Boy Reunited With Dog Who Went Missing For Two Months

There is no worse feeling than losing your pet. I am thankful that I’ve never had to go through the trauma of having my dog run away.

But for those who have, it’s a very distressing experience – particularly the longer the missing period drags on.

Tyler is a 10-year-old boy that received quite a fright when his beloved dog, Bruiser, took off in pursuit of a rabbit.

The poor boy was left distraught, and after two months had gone by and there was no sign of Bruiser anywhere, Tyler began to lose hope that he would ever be able to find his best friend again.

Fortunately, Tyler was in for a very pleasant surprise.

Couple Sets Up Camera To Catch Porch Pirate And Discovers Its The Neighbor’s Dog

We all despise porch piracy. Unfortunately, it seems to be a rather frequent occurrence in our society. We’ve seen videos of people trying to come up with all kinds of traps and diversions to keep people from stealing delivered items off their porch.

There have also been plenty of people who’ve uploaded videos of these brazen porch pirates thanks to their home surveillance systems – one of those often being doorbells with video.

For one family, they were about to make a very interesting discovery about a recent theft. As it turns out, one homeowner was experiencing a bizarre and upsetting string of thefts of packages. And that is when a home investigation was launched after the homeowner and her husband decided to review security footage from their doorbell’s video in order to see what was going on.

What they found was truly entertaining.

As it turns out, their porch pirate turned out to be a large white dog who was the one behind the packages’ mysterious disappearance. They watched while the pooch scooped up the package in its mouth and, without hesitation, ran off into the night with it. Quite brazen!

The homeowner explained, “We were on a ‘staycation’ and my husband woke me up in the middle of the night saying ‘you won’t believe who is on the front porch’! It was a porch pirate. I was shocked. My box, which had been delivered after I left for the trip, was promptly stolen and caught on camera. The thief was a massive white dog.”

But it wasn’t lost, the package was returned the following day. As for why the dog felt inclined to steal the box? We’ll never know.

The box didn’t have anything edible or remotely enticing as it was full of makeup and skincare products – all toxic-free items of course.

The homeowner added, “I did find the box the next day in a grassy area near our house, holes bitten into it but my lip gloss and moisturizer still intact.”

Dog Saves Her Human’s Life By Finding Help After Seizure

One Otowa family’s pup is eating like royalty this week after her heroism saved a life.

“[My wife] Diane comes home with a couple of big steaks and I thought ‘Wow, this is great, I’m getting a big steak!’ and she said, ‘No, it’s for Clover for doing such a great job,'” Randall Moore told CTV News.

Clover, a one-and-a-half-year-old Maremma mix, had stepped in when Haley Moore, the family’s daughter, suffered a seizure that left her collapsed on the ground during a walk. Thanks to Clover’s quick actions and the help of strangers, Haley’s life was saved!

“All I remember is waking up in the ambulance and being really confused; just like, ‘what is going on?’” Haley explained to the outlet. While enjoying a clear day on their neighborhood walk, she had suffered a seizure and lost consciousness. Clover was distraught, but quickly took charge of the situation.

She watched as an SUV drove by, oblivious of the situation, and formed a plan. The leash was still in Haley’s hand, so Clover jumped and twisted until she was free. Then, slowly backing into the middle of the road, she decided to stop the next vehicle that came her way.

It turned out to be a delivery truck, driven by 21-year-old Dryden Oatway. A video of the incident was captured on a neighbor’s security camera, and shows Clover carefully but deliberately bringing the truck to a halt by fearlessly blocking its path.

“The whole time she was backing down the street she had eyes on Haley; didn’t look away from her. She kept her distance from me but made sure her owner was okay and that was amazing,” Oatway told CTV. He quickly reached the girl, laying in the snowbank. Clover repeated her ploy and got the attention of Danielle Pilon, who leapt out of her Jeep to help Oatway and Moore.

Satisfied that Haley was getting help, Clover ran to inform the rest of the Moore family.

“When I got a knock on the door from the neighbours, they were frantic and our dog Clover was barking like crazy,” Randall Moore recalled. Paramedics had already reached the scene and were treating Moore in an ambulance when her family got to her.

Fortunately, she is okay, though the family is unsure of what caused the seizure. For now, the family is celebrating Clover’s quick thinking with steak dinners and plenty of love.

“She’s a really amazing dog and I love her to death,” Haley added. “If this ends up happening again, I feel 10 times safer and I know she will be there for me.”

“Pandemic Puppies” Are Being Returned To Shelters Nationwide

The Covid-19 pandemic was devastating in many ways. As the world starts rebuilding and preparing for the future of a “post-Covid” world, much of that devastation will continue to have a lasting impact.

As the pandemic began, a bright spot for those working in animal rescue was the sharp increase in demand for shelter dogs and other pets. However, as those who work in the field know, many who choose to adopt, especially first-time owners, can face a huge number of challenges.

In many ways, the phenomenon of “pandemic puppies” reflects the unfortunate trend of rabbit adoption during Easter and other “fads” of animal ownership that put the health of the animal second to their novelty.

The boom in adoption was largely spurred by people working from home, though that situation was temporary for many. Now, as in-person work resumes for many career fields, adopted dogs (especially puppies) are getting the short end of the stick.

“They got a whole world of behavioral issues because now they are without their family, they’re stuck in a crate eight hours a day, or whatever it is it’s very traumatizing for them,” said Morgan Sokolow, director of Pet Matchmaker Rescue in Bakersfield, CA in an interview with BakersfieldNow.

Sokolow claims that this issue emphasizes the need for proper training and planning when choosing to bring a pet into your life. For some, this may mean obedience courses or personalized help from a trainer or veterinarian. To take care of a pup, socialization and consistency are, of course, key as well, though the uncertainty of the pandemic has made this more difficult for some.

In the unfortunate event that a dog needs to be surrendered or returned to a shelter, owners should keep in mind all they’ve learned about the animal and be willing to share it with those that will be taking on the responsibility.

“The best thing they can do is give us as much information as possible,” Sokolow continues. “The more information that rescues have in the shelters, the more we can acclimate them to the right environment with a foster or… another rescue.”

As one of the many dog owners who adopted a pup in the middle of lockdown, I couldn’t imagine giving him up. It was absolutely the right decision and he brings us so much joy. However, everyone’s situation is different, and, especially now, unpredictable.

Nursing Home Hires A Golden Retriever Puppy To ‘Bring Happiness’ To The Residents

A nursing home just hired an adorable golden retriever puppy named Gracie. Her job is to bring happiness and joy to the senior residents.

The 3-month-old pup was “hired” in March by the Good Samaritan Society – Scotland, a nursing home based in Scotland, South Dakota.

According to a post shared by the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, Gracie’s role in the facility is to bring “happiness and joy to residents and staff.”

So far, it seems that Gracie is doing her job beautifully. In an interview with Good Morning America, the social services manager of the facility, Pam Stewart, said, “We’ve seen a lot of changes since she’s come. We’ve seen a lot of smiles, cuddles. It’s giving them a lot to talk about versus what they’ve seen in the world.”

Gracie initially began working in her role as joy meister when she was adopted by Stewart, who decided to take the little pup to work with her. According to ABC News, Gracie began to accompany Stewart to work and residents quickly fell in love with her.

Gracie spends most of her time at the nursing home cuddling with residents and getting all of the pets and scratches her little heart desires. She provides comfort and joy to around 30 senior citizens per day. Of course, Gracie doesn’t do visits alone, instead, she’s always accompanied by a staff member to ensure the visits are happy, safe, and positive.

Many senior citizens feel lonely and isolated. These feelings have only increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Gracie is helping take an edge off the pain. As such, the senior citizens always welcome Gracie’s presence and appreciate getting to be physically close with her.

As it turns out, Gracie isn’t the first dog to greet the residents of the Good Samaritan Society – Scotland. They previously had a resident dog named Hope who was a big hit with the residents, but she passed away back in November.

Lucky & Kittery: We’re Not Counting Days, We’re Making Days Count

Pal Robin Desmet, former Valley Patriot “Kitty’s Corner” columnist and respected MSPCA volunteer, goaded me into meeting the shelter’s senior cats just in case one took my fancy. They all did but most were spoken for. But one buff beauty caught my eye and heart when he strutted his spry stuff in my presence. Lucky had been in this very room as a kitten, spent 14 loving years with a caretaker who recently entered hospice, then spent another 9 months in a difficult foster situation. His luck was about to change.

A year ago Sunday, Lucky came to live out his golden years with me, where he has been treated like 14K gold. Lucky is handsome and his puss truly belongs on the cover of the feline version of AARP as an inspiration to people and pets alike. No one would ever guess he’s now 17!

Pre-COVID, I was also out and about more (like most folks) so I wanted my precious guy to have a pal even as just a grooming partner. I returned to the MSPCA in August for the “Holding Out for Heroes” event and considered adopting a gorgeous white domestic shorthaired cat, Bella, who required a special diet, or the equally lovely Giselle. Once again, my prospects were spoken for.

But then I saw the owl-like face of a timid tabby, Kittery, and knew she was the one. This poor dame had spent her 4 years living with 30 other cats in a hoarding situation, then waited another 5 months for someone to adopt her in the shelter. I noticed her ear was mangled and that she was matted but had no inkling of just how frightened she was. Anyhow I felt for this unsocialized, special-needs gal who reminded me of that wallflower at the mixer who is never asked to dance.

Rescues all bond with their feeder and, over time, this Maine C**n mix cutie has made great strides — but I also let her call all the shots. Within 3 weeks, she began to relate, crying for her morning feeding. Within 10 months, she was loudly purring and jumping onto the bed to be petted and cuddle. Now she greets me at the front door of my apartment and will usually linger near me.

Kittery loves being rescued but I have always felt they really rescue us. I don’t know how I would have survived this homestay without my pair of appreciative, doting roommates. Fortunately for them, they have managed to sleep through this crisis.

Labrador Found Tied To Tree In Hurricane Is Now A Narcotics Detection Dog For Maryland Police

Hurricane Laura tore through Louisiana in August 2020 and people either evacuated or took shelter. But one family left their dog, a Labrador retriever named Bolton, tied to a tree to fend for himself.

Thankfully, a kind neighbor spotted the dog and took him inside until the storm passed. The young pup was then brought to a local shelter where TRU Rescue, a Maryland dog rescue, heard about him.

They transported the sweet boy to Maryland and placed him with a loving foster, Amanda, who also happens to be the daughter of a Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

She quickly realized that the intelligent and curious dog would make a great K-9.

Police dogs need to be highly intelligent, focused, have a powerful sense of smell, and loyal. Bolt checked all the boxes.

In September, Harford County Sheriff’s Office was in need of a new K-9 for their Crime Suppression Unit and Bolt applied for the position.

Bolt passed the initial tests with flying colors and was adopted by and enrolled in training with Senior Deputy Andrew Sampson.

“His nose is just, I mean, it’s perfect,” Sampson told WBALTV.

Five months later, he was certified as a Narcotics Detection Dog and was ready to get to work. Bolt proved he was the perfect dog for the job by using his powerful snout and training to sniff out drugs on a traffic stop.

The department posted, “Within just two days he had his first successful drug find on a traffic stop!”

Bolt joins a team of nine other K-9 dogs at the department, but is the first rescue dog in almost 30 years.

He loves his job and is seen smiling in photos posted along with his story on Facebook.

“It was a highly unusual set of circumstances that led to Bolt becoming a Police K9, but we sure are glad he is here! We’re so excited to have Bolt join our team and very grateful to Christine Williams of TRU Rescue and Amanda, Bolt’s foster mom, for making this possible!”

The once homeless dog is now a hero, and none of it would have been possible without the kindhearted people who cared for him.

TRU rescue responded by posting, “We are happy to be a part of this remarkable dog’s journey!! It starts with a ripple, one act of kindness spreads and grows!”
