How do we measure up?

At Underwater Galleries, we are always looking for ways to improve and gage how well our products compare to other potential options. We recently purchased the only other ceramic, hollow, stone promoted on the market, just to compare the two. We may have been the first, but who knows? We were curious and wanted to see! We selected their “large” stone shown here. This is a photo of the their large stone next to our large stone. The price is the same! Wow! We were pretty shocked by the sheer size difference. (Our product is shown on the left. Their product is shown here on the right.)

This week, we will shed light on H.R. 4521. Rick Preuss is on the Aquatics Defense Committee. We are encouraging our customers to read this letter from PIJAC (Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council) and consider becoming a member for the most up-to-date information on regulations that affect the hobby.

The Facts About the Lacey Act Amendments in the COMPETES Act of 2022 (H.R.4521)

There has been considerable conversation, and unfortunately also some incorrect interpretations, over the past days concerning amendments to the Lacey Act that are included in the COMPETES Act of 2022, and we want to set the record straight. The fact is that these amendments are still included in the legislation that will be considered by the Senate, they were not removed prior to H.R. 4521 passing in the House. And the more important fact is that these amendments pose a significant threat to everyone who owns, breeds, raises, transports, sells, or provides products and services to care for all animals other than cats and dogs.

What we do know is that these amendments would: authorize the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to prevent interstate transport of species listed as injurious; create a white list of import-approved species and any animal not listed would be considered injurious and banned by default; and enable the Secretary of the Interior to use an "emergency declaration" to prohibit importation of a species suspected to be injurious to humans, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, wildlife, or wildlife resources for up to three years with no public or Congressional input.

What this means is that importing or transporting across state lines animals would immediately become unlawful, should those species not have cleared the complex and lengthy process of being deemed “not injurious”. And at any time, a species could be banned on short notice for years via a variety of factors that cause it to be considered injurious. This would trigger a domino effect across the live animal economy, devastating not only those businesses and farms that sell those species, but also manufacturers, distributors and retailers who produce and sell products to grow or care for them.

The COMPETES Act is now in the Senate after passing the House on February 4, 2022. What we do not yet know is whether the Senate will take up the House bill for consideration or opt to reconcile it with their own bill that passed this past summer, the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) (S. 1260).

Our call to action is this: Please watch closely for communication from the organizations that have signed this letter and monitor their websites. When the time comes to act there will be a very short period during which we can effectively counter this effort.

Our story continued…
We were scrambling to get more individual store accounts to make up for the distributor loss but it was slow going and still not enough.

A month later a letter came in the mail from a new state organization called " Oregon Marketplace", working to help Oregon small businesses with economic growth. "Wal-Mart," it said, was going to open its first six stores in Oregon ( yup, 1993 no Walmarts here yet) and they wanted to do a special Oregon display to celebrate the Oregon Trail 150th Anniversary. "

Do you have a product you would like to sell to Walmart?" it asked? " Yes", we said! A crisis was avoided and a new chapter began!

Episode 4 "But our products are made of Eco-Friendly Ceramic!"
 
Making our products from ceramic was very important to us. We knew that resin plastic was a thing and of course Penn Plax, with their bubbling treasure chests, had been around and made of plastic for decades. But we did not want to work in that material.

It was 1993, we had both been members of Friends of the Earth back in college, and we were not going to make things from petroleum derivatives and some kind of synthetic hardeners, which is what resin plastics are. I question whether or not the resins are "off gassing" in the aquarium water and harming the health of the fish; but even beyond that, I did not want our product to be unsustainable or contaminate local waters with pollutants. The term "resin" is a marketing trick as it is; because resin sounds like tree resin which sounds like a good thing but it is not tree resin at all. In fact the first time the term was used it was the manufacturer's name for the substance - and it was " Resun" which soon became resin so it would be more acceptable than plastic.

As mentioned previously, clay is a naturally occurring substance made from microscopic flakes of the mother rock: Feldspar, that eroded over the millennia. It has been used for 20,000 years and is a miraculous gift of mother earth ( I have a real passion for the stuff!)
Anyway, so I turned to our distributors and played the "eco-friendly, sustainable" card, "surely your customers want this option right?" I said, trying to convince them to continue to stock our products next to the new plastic competition. " I don't think anyone cares," one of them told me. "This resin plastic may be harmful to the fish", I said. "Well, if the fish die, we will sell more fish, right", he said. Some people are such idiots. "No" I said, " They will just as likely give up and put their tank away into the garage and forget about it." "Whatever. " he said, "sorry, bye."

Whoa! What is happening?!

Quick cleaning tip! If you're fishbowl is overgrown with floating algae, this straw trick worked for me as a quick, temporary fix!

I just spun the straw around in the tank and it picked up all the algae it ran into.

Then I used a turkey baster to suck the algae from the straw!
