I have not posted on Bronx's page in a super long time. I am happy to report that he is doing amazing and just saw his specialist last week. Her only concern is his muzzle and a little patch on his back which is where he has the greatest hair loss.

Bronx is still on all of his daily supplements, Apoquel and Hydroxychloroquine. He eats Open Farm whitefish food with Green Beans mixed in. He is a picky eater and chooses when he wants to eat.

His vet studied at UPENN and provides the researchers updates when she has him in the office on how he is doing. They are amazed at how well he is doing.

Here are a couple pics of him recently.

ECLE is a horrible disease for any dog to go through. Bronx is in a horrible flare-up currently and nothing is helping. His specialized vet has prescribed a new medication that is on its way via the mail. He is barely eating, sleeping all day and night and has the shivers. I wish the breeder could experience what he is going through and maybe they would start testing all of the dogs prior to breeding. There are pics of his skin today.

UPDATE: Over the past several weeks, Bronx has been in a flare up. I was hoping it would pass due to the current situation that we are all in right now. He was not improving as he has in the past so I contacted his specialist in DC and was able to get an appointment. It seems that his mycophenelate is no longer working for him. We have switched his medication that he takes daily and started a round of steroids and antibiotics. It has been a week and he is slowly improving. My poor guy, I feel so bad for him. He is sweet as can be. ECLE is such a horrible disease that all can be prevented by testing through PENGEN prior to breeding.

This afternoon Bronx felt the need to play hide and go seek. I couldn’t find him anywhere in the house. I looked everywhere and no Bronx. After searching the top floor again he sticks his nose out of the shower in the guest bathroom. The curtain want messed up when I looked in there the first time. He was just standing there like he wants a bath but poor thing can’t have any baths.

This dog is a nut job that’s for sure.

This is Bronx with two trazadone and suppose to be resting post-neuter. I guess he is not phased by loosing his little ones.

Bronx in a stare down with something I can’t see. Who knows with this one.

Day Two Post-Neuter. Bronx is doing well from his neuter as long as I keep him sedated. If not, he is his crazy as he wants to be.

He has started hunching his back today, this is a sign that he is flaring up with his ECLE. Praying this flare doesn’t last to long. My poor little dude.

Bronx the GSP with ECLE Biography

Bronx is a 1 year old German Shorthaired Pointer that has Exfoliative Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (ECLE). ECLE is a Genetic Auto-Immune Disease that could have been prevented by the breeders of his litter. ECLE has, to date, only been described in the German short-haired pointers. Examination of the pedigrees of affected dogs suggests an autosomal recessive form of inheritance. The disease is considered to be an autoimmune problem as the basement membrane zone of the skin is affected (as it is with all types of lupus erythematosus) with antigenantibody complex deposition leading to an inflammatory response. Any GSP that is going to be breed, should be tested prior to breeding. This testing can be performed through UPENN and the cost is a minimal $75. This is uncalled for if a breeder is refusing to perform the testing prior to breeding since the result has a chance of this horrible disease being passed to the puppies. There is no cure of this disease and the owners only can do the best that they can with maintaining/decreasing the number of flare-ups the pup has or to euthanize. I refuse to euthanize since Bronx is a puppy full of life and I am doing well at maintaining his flares but as stated before, this all could have been prevented.

Bronx was a result of breeding the following GSP’s. Breeder: Chris Duvall from Jay, OK SIR: Bulls Si Back Daddy AKC: SR91640103 11-17 DAM: Sadie Crazy Heart AKC: SR91837001 11-17
