Demi’s new home has been amazing in every way. Her person tagged me in this photo a few days ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. Not only does she look relaxed and happy- the critical part!- but her coat looks incredible. She was terribly allergic to something here in Riverside, and this time of year was always a battle to keep her skin and coat in top shape. It wasn’t top of my criteria for her placement, but was definitely something I kept in mind. I suspected the move north would do her good, and I am not disappointed!

It's not a Joke!

Demi is ready to find a family.

Three years ago today we loaded Demi up at the shelter, moments before they closed for lockdown. It's been a long road, but she's a happy, healthy horse now! Of course, I wrote a huge long description and FB ate it. So, I'll keep this one brief but please do ask questions! I'll post updates in the comments. For now, take a scroll through this page to see her progress.

She saw the vet March 16th for vaccines, coggins, and dental. He thinks she's about ten years old. Low-mid four figs. I won't be including a no sale or first refusal clause- I know those can be problematic even when they aren't abused. I will, however, be sending along contact information. She has a safety net here. If folks outside the region are interested I'm happy to see if she's a match, but will require references.

Happy Gotchya Day to "Pandemic," aka Demi.

Demi has come such a long way! We’re pretty sure she had proper old fashioned sweenies in both shoulders, which means that whatever caused the divots also impinged her nerves.

It’s one of those injuries that uses to be common (in this case, because of the need for live horsepower for driving), but one never expects to see in person. It took a while to find folks who had rehabbed this type on injury, but it turns out we were doing just what she needed! Lots of turnout and long slow walks, being careful not to overwork her shoulders, and some targeted stretching. It’s takes a year, give or take, for a damaged nerve to heal.

She has improved by leaps and bounds over the last six months. There are many things to credit for this (including one of my lessons’ mom, who adores her- and it’s mutual!- and Finish Line Horse Products’ Easy Rider), but the biggest thing she needed was simply time.

We’re barn sitting for some folks up at the Tevis Cup, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Last week Demi was showing off clean leads both directions, without support or even encouragement. It was a first! She seems to have her full range of motion back, without pain or discomfort.

Which means it’s time to build new muscles and flexibility! I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get her accustomed to the EuroXciser - Horse Exerciser in time to make use of it before her stall’s usual resident needed it back. But she loves it!

Walking with the herd is the best thing ever.

Demi is having a fabulous time at “summer camp” while we barn sit for some folks at the Tevis!

You wanted more coverage, and we think we have it for you!

For all your Ride Day needs, please bookmark this page:

There you'll also see a schedule of sorts as to when we think we might be live-casting - and where you should go to see it.

Mostly it will be right here on FB, but this year we're *hoping* to broadcast from Red Star Ridge straight to our YouTube Channel. All times are going to be contingent on riders arriving at the various locations - so this may vary a lot (the forecast is for warmer temperatures on Saturday? will riders go faster to beat the heat? or slow down to avoid overheating?).

(And rest assured, that final "WEBCAST" link will be live by the time the ride starts!)

Demi is still nervous about her feet be handled by strangers, and after a loose dog incident with our new (amazing, and amazingly patient) farrier, I caved (and saved) and got myself a stand and a better set of nippers.

Demi was pretty comfortable with the jack right off, so I made the mistake that f trying to trim her right away- she desperately needs it!

This was a mistake for two reasons. I’d forgotten how tight her shoulders get when I haven’t been doing her stretches. She has damage on both shoulders (probably from a rough start under saddle). Her right, pictured, is worse- and this was the foot she objected to me trimming.

The second reason is that this is a horse that will give 110% if you give her time and break everything down. Rush and she’ll leave, body and mind. So I took a breath, and started over.

She was amazing. Her right front was the only one she wouldn’t just relax and let me move around with it in the cradle. Even so, she’d let me lift it and rest it for a few moments at a time. We’ll do this until all four feet are easy before we reintroduce tools.

And I’ll remember to do her stretches first!

Midnight snack? Not quite, but the heat does make for some late visits!

Caught this sweet moment the other night. It’s good to see her willing to lay down out in the herd.
