Demi has come such a long way! We’re pretty sure she had proper old fashioned sweenies in both shoulders, which means that whatever caused the divots also impinged her nerves.
It’s one of those injuries that uses to be common (in this case, because of the need for live horsepower for driving), but one never expects to see in person. It took a while to find folks who had rehabbed this type on injury, but it turns out we were doing just what she needed! Lots of turnout and long slow walks, being careful not to overwork her shoulders, and some targeted stretching. It’s takes a year, give or take, for a damaged nerve to heal.
She has improved by leaps and bounds over the last six months. There are many things to credit for this (including one of my lessons’ mom, who adores her- and it’s mutual!- and Finish Line Horse Products’ Easy Rider), but the biggest thing she needed was simply time.
We’re barn sitting for some folks up at the Tevis Cup, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Last week Demi was showing off clean leads both directions, without support or even encouragement. It was a first! She seems to have her full range of motion back, without pain or discomfort.
Which means it’s time to build new muscles and flexibility! I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get her accustomed to the EuroXciser - Horse Exerciser in time to make use of it before her stall’s usual resident needed it back. But she loves it!
Walking with the herd is the best thing ever.
