This sweet little man recently underwent surgery for a cleft pallet, and his mom being the amazing and responsible owner she is, pre-ordered him a muzzle to aid in his recovery, and make sure he was trained and comfy with it before the surgery. Currently tube fed, it's vital to make sure nothing foreign is ingested while he heals. ❤️‍🩹
Best of luck little one!! ❤️

New scavenger muzzle for my girl Nala! I know I usually only show Armin in his muzzle, but this girl is also muzzle trained. She gave us a bit of a scare over the weekend (again) after a major bellyache from something she presumably ate. She's doing much better now, but having the Scavenger Guard in her new muzzle will ensure that she can't sneak anything to make her sick again!! ❤️‍🩹

✨MUZZLED DOGS ARE GOOD DOGS✨ CALL FOR FEEDBACK!

As a reactive or otherwise -muzzled dog owner, what are some things you would like people to know about you and/or your pup? What's something you wish you could've said to that one person, or HAVE said, in order to try and help others understand not only the importance of muzzling, but anything else you would've wanted them to know?

The other day we came across a lady who was loving on our pups, and claimed to LOVE dogs, but when we turned away she said to her companion "oh, so sad with the muzzle, huh!". I had actually taken Armin's muzzle off for a moment so he could have a drink as the bowl is too small to fit his muzzle in there. Given that we were so close to being back as the car, I left it off. Not two minutes later I've got my hand down his throat, wrestling out a large chicken bone. My finger got accidentally chomped in the process (not seriously, I'm perfectly fine and so is he) but I sure felt like turning right around and marching back to that lady and showing her exactly why it's NOT sad that he wears a muzzle!!

In trying to spread awareness, I think it's important that people hear OUR side of the story and I would love to compile some chronicles of real tales, anecdotes or otherwise things you as an owner would like to share. Please comment below with your piece if you'd be comfortable with me using your piece (no owner names will be used), or feel free to PM me as well. Say anything you want!! This is a difficult topic for a lot of people, and it's okay to let your passion show through ❤️ I have met SO many dedicated and caring owners in doing this and I know that doesn't always come across to some people when they see a muzzle on a dog.

Let's end the stigma!! 👏🏻📣

✨MUTT OF THE MONTH- ASHTYN ✨

Things have been a little extra busy this month and after some miscommunication with the pup that was originally lined up, we had to find a new donor and I completely forgot to share this month's Mutt!

Meet: ASHTYN! Those eyes, am I right?? 😍

Ashtyn was saved from a euthanasia list in Clayton County Georgia where he was picked up as a stray. He then spent the next year to a year and a half in boarding before he made his way north. Once here, he settled in rather well. Unfortunately another foster dog attacked him. He healed nicely but was more stand off-ish to other male dogs. He improved a lot once he was the only pup in the home. He now gets along fairly well with his baby (5month old) foster brother. He has been in several fights with other dogs and is struggling with barrier aggression. Unfortunately he lost a fight and had his ear torn (same ear that was torn before). He had that stitched and now we limit his time with other dogs. He especially does not like other intact males. He does ok if another, known to him, dog is around but leaves him alone. But barriers are a struggle for him. Whether it’s a window, fence or crate, he’ll react pretty fiercely.
Ashtyn was adopted but after 4 days he stopped eating and really wasn’t a fan of another dog in his “new home” so he is now back with me (in foster)!
8 may be elderly for a dog but Ashtyn doesn’t let that stop him. He’ll still try to break down barriers to try and show another dog who is in charge.
Although Ashtyn has made tremendous progress since coming north, he still has a long road ahead if he’s to cohabitate with another K9.
We haven’t been able to socialize much due to his reactivity to other dogs. The hope is, once comfortable with a muzzle that we can teach him that he doesn’t need to fight to survive anymore.
Ashtyn is a clovers in the ruff pup 🥰 his favorite thing to do is cuddle with people he’s bonded too, roll in the grass and explore to let his hunting instincts flourish.

Let's give this boy the help he needs. Please share and hopefully he will find his forever home soon!!

Neo! 💓

This good girl is learning that the world isn't such a scary place, despite the hustle and bustle of the big city around her. Love to hear that she's getting complimented on her cute muzzle as well. 🥰 Remember, reactive dogs aren't giving you a hard time, they're having a hard time! It takes a lot of patience and understanding to own a reactive dog so if you see one, it's very likely they are working on their issues already. Make sure to give their owners major kudos as well, they deserve it!! ❤️

It's the long holiday weekend here in Ontario, and we are going camping!! It'll be Nala's first time ever and we think she's going to love it, as being outdoors is her most favourite thing ever. Armin is an old hand and has been camping many times, but this will be our first trip with the two of them, so no doubt it will be interesting!

As a result of being out in the bush for a few days, I will be unable to answer any questions or queries until we return on Monday. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!! 😊🥰

A gorgeous muzzle for an even more gorgeous dog!! 😍

Betty, like many of my clients, suffers from PICA which is a disorder that leads them to eating all kinds of non-edible things, and has already had surgery to remove a foreign body. Her anti-scavenging muzzle will keep her safe in the future and have her looking pretty while she does it!! 🥰❤️‍🩹

Our previous Mutt of the Month Daboa finally received his muzzle after an unfortunate mixup with the post office. Doesn't he look handsome? 🥰❤️ I hope life is kinder to this boy from here on out ❤️

[DABOA RECEIVED A GIFT]

10 year old Daboa is coming up on his 1 year anniversary of being with Mattie's Place on May 22

He's a great dog. A total Grandpa vibe. He loves just catching sunbeams outside and soaking them in and his 2nd favourite place is being in Amber's arms, lying belly up and being cradled and carried around like a baby.

He loves and is loved by Amber, who he's been boarding with the past year.

2023/2024 the world shifted with a dog overpopulation crisis and dogs with any sort of "history" unfortunately are now deemed unadoptable by society.

I expect he'll live and die in rescue. Sad reality for a beautiful boy that is an adoptable dog and can be an amazing companion, given the chance. With the dog overpopulation crisis Ontario is in and the continuation of rescues and breeders importing dogs, Daboa doesn't stand a chance, unfortunately.

Daboa was in this week for his yearly vaccines. We also ran some tests on his ears and eyes as he historically had some ye**ty ears and goopy eyes and that has reoccurred, so he's undergoing treatment to resolve again.

That's why he's looking like a sad panda. It's not the muzzle, he's just not feeling well this week.

He's also due for another professional groom. His last professionally groom was mid January and he will be going in again soon for another bath, full brush and blow-out. He gets daily brushing and maintenance, but these Chow coats require professional grooming every few months.

Daboa was also gifted a muzzle from Mia's Muzzles this week! When Daboa is in public or socializing with other Mattie's Place dogs he is muzzled so this is an appreciated gift. We haven't really had a chance to put it to the test yet, but will update once he's worn it a bit more and we have feedback to offer.

It does look awesome though! Muzzles don't have to be scary and muzzles aren't just for problematic dogs. More dogs should be muzzle trained for so many reasons.

Thank you Mia's Muzzles for thinking about DaBoa. It's appreciated.

In working with hundreds of owners and their pups, I've come to see that dogs who are muzzled are also some of the most trained dogs out there. Their owners are incredibly dedicated to getting them the help they need to live a great life and in conjunction with muzzling, they are so often also in the process of going through other behavioral training. It's important to remember that as it's often incorrectly assumed that someone has just put a muzzle on their dog and is not attempting any further training. Remember though, you don't owe anyone an explanation! I'm sure the majority of us have come across those folks who have nothing nice to say about our muzzled pups. Some are open to being educated and some very much are not. Only you know the full story and that's what matters most! ❤️

Why Choose a Muzzle?

This is a question we often receive, and sometimes we even encounter less sincere inquiries or accusations regarding muzzles. I've come across numerous people on the internet who hide behind their keyboards and make statements like:

- "Poor dog wearing that awful thing."
- "That breed doesn't need muzzles; they're not aggressive."
- "Why don't you just train your dog?"

I always strive to respond to these comments with an open mind and kindness since, as is often the case, the negativity usually stems from a lack of education or understanding. I recognize that not all muzzles are created equal, and there are definitely better options available. The muzzles you frequently see on our page are wire basket-shaped muzzles designed with your dog's safety and comfort in mind.

A well-fitted muzzle should not hinder your dog's ability to pant, eat, drink, or play! In fact, my own dog, who often appears in photos and videos playing and running with his friends at daycare, wears a muzzle for most of the day. It keeps him and those around him safe. He actually loves his muzzle because it signals that he's about to embark on an adventure, and he genuinely gets excited to put it on. Without his muzzle, he wouldn't be able to enjoy 99% of the activities he does outside our home. His muzzle is his freedom.

A muzzle is not just a quick fix. People you see out and about with their muzzled dogs have often invested significant time in training their dogs to wear a muzzle. Reactive dogs deserve to go outside, and a muzzle serves as a training tool that allows them to continue their training while ensuring everyone's safety. Believe me, a muzzled dog is ten times safer than an unmuzzled one, and an owner who cares enough about their dog to put in the effort to muzzle train them, regardless of the reason, is an exceptional owner.

Lastly, any dog has the potential to display aggression. Regardless of their size, age, or breed, there is always a chance that they may react or become aggressive. Genetics, negative experiences, or simply unfortunate circumstances can cause even the happiest and friendliest dog to lash out and become fearful, regardless of their breed. Moreover, a dog in pain is far more likely to bite in a highly stressful situation. Many professionals in the veterinary and grooming industries have to muzzle dogs on a daily basis for various reasons. By training your dog to accept a muzzle at home, even if they are the friendliest dog on the planet, you'll be greatly appreciated by those who need to work with them.

As a measure to aid in my catch-up of regular orders, the Rush Order option will be temporarily unavailable when you place your order.

I appreciate the patience, understanding and support received from everyone as we get orders out as quickly as possible! There will be an announcement when the Rush Order option has returned. If you've placed a Rush Order and are still awaiting its arrival, not to worry, it will still be completed within the given timeframe.

Thank you! 😊
