Here are some tips for keeping pets safe in the heat:
* Temperature: In the summer, keep your home between 75–80°F, and in the winter, keep it between 68–72°F. Provide access to air-conditioned or breezy rooms.
* Exercise: Limit outdoor activities and exercise to cooler times of day. If the temperature is above 90°F, don't let your dog outside for more than 10–20 minutes, and monitor them the whole time.
* Paws: Protect your dog's paws from hot pavement with booties or paw wax. You can also check hot pavement with the back of your hand.
* Water: Provide plenty of water and ice packs for your pet to lie on.
* Cooling products: Use cooling body wraps, mats, or vests soaked in cool water to keep your pet from overheating.
* Shade: Provide a comfortable outdoor bed in a shaded area.
* Watch for signs of heatstroke: Heatstroke is an emergency that can cause permanent damage or death if not treated immediately. Signs include:
* Heavy panting
* Glazed eyes
* Rapid heartbeat
* Difficulty breathing
* Excessive thirst
* Lethargy
* Fever
* Dizziness
* Lack of coordination
* Profuse salivation
* Vomiting
* Deep red or purple tongue
* Seizures
* Unconsciousness
