Beckham trialed last weekend in Rally and Obedience.

As I'm prepping to have a couple litters this year, I've been thinking it's time for some refresh information on breeding and what that means.

I am a hobby breeder... all health testing completed that is recommended by my breed club (Golden Retriever Club of America) and compete in multiple sports with all my dogs -
Even the dogs I'm not breeding.

ETHICAL BREEDERS

The line between ethical and unethical lies with health testing. Either you do proper health testing, or you don’t. I’m going to break the ethical breeder club into two pieces: the bare minimum and the true hobby breeder.
...At a minimum and I mean bare minimum, breeders that fall into this category (bare minimum) will do breed club recommended health testing.

HOBBY BREEDER

They go above and beyond health testing and do stuff with their dogs. Hobby breeders breed for a purpose, and that purpose is not to make money – although it’s nice if they do because gets invested straight back into the dogs. The true hobby breeder competes in conformation, obedience, rally, agility, field, herding, tracking, lure coursing, dock diving, barn hunt, etc. The hobby is the competition and the preservation of the breed. The hobby is not breeding.

Basically, responsible breeders do “all the things” to make the best puppies they can, to ensure those puppies have the best possible lives... Every dog is welcomed back into the breeder’s home if the family can no longer keep it. Responsible breeders keep dogs out of shelters, and many even contribute to rescue efforts.

Beckham.

I'm beyond proud. We are at his first obedience/rally show this weekend.

Obedience Ring = 2nd place, scored a 193/200

Rally Ring = 2nd place, scored a 97/100

The biggest win is that I have a 7 month old puppy in a soft crate at a show with dogs barking and moving around very close to him, people doing the same... and he laid down and went to sleep.

Because I know I'll get questions... we've decided she's staying here for the time being.

I'm not sure yet how long she'll be here, if it's forever or if it's until I'm sure she's ready for her forever family, but she fell back into our lives unexpectedly and fits into our home seamlessly.

I greatly appreciate (and was surprised at how many there were!) all who have reached out asking about her. Thank you for being so willing to give Miss Thang a home. 🥰
