Linus got neutered this week. His face pretty much explains how he’s feeling about it. 🤭🤣 (Also, he’s fine. No walks or frisbee for a little while but he had good sleep last night and is more back to himself today.)

Since it’s I thought I should post a couple of pictures to get everyone in the Halloween 🎃 👻 mood. I need to add to these with some of the goats!

This little backyard farm dog, Linus, turned ONE today so we took him on a little adventure to to explore the waterfront and also into for new toys and treats!

He is quite possibly the best dog we’ve ever had and brings joy to us daily. Please join us by wishing him a Happy 1st Birthday (bonus if it’s from one of your furry or feathered friends 🤭)!

I haven’t updated about the “Babies” in a while. They are Mystic Onyx and were an absolute impulse addition after losing a few of my girls unexpectedly. These gorgeous birds are a silkie cross and have the adorable extra toe. The hens will keep their black plumage, beaks, and eyes. The Roo will have the same but with reddish-brown highlights throughout.

This is the first Roo I am considering keeping (sold to me as a pullet - SURPRISE!). So far he is curious and friendly with a sweet demeanor. We will see if his nature holds. With so much of my flock being older hens, it’s unfair to bring in a Roo who is anything but sweet.

Do you have any of this breed in your flock? Have you considered a silkie cross?

(The group photo cracks me up. I had them carefully arranged but the little Roo got wild and the gal on the right tried to fly but then thought better of it. 🤣)

The last two weeks have been extremely odd for summer for me. I spent five days in Boston for work came back, did what I could around the house and garden to reset for the next work week and by Sunday night I started not feeling well. I was full-blown sick Monday morning and have spent this entire week truly under the weather.

Luckily, the garden and chickens did not take a break over the last two weeks and I was able to come home, recover, and have all of this waiting for me.

My favorite part of having a backyard farm is that I’m never without. Sometimes that means never without projects or tending to the animals or maintenance or loss. Sometimes I’m never without enjoying my hard work, with the literal fruits (or eggs) of my labor.

I have a lot to do still to get caught up from the last couple of weeks, but today I decided to treat myself by enjoying the abundance I was gifted by the weeks and years of hard work building my little backyard farm.

I hope you all find time to enjoy whatever you’re never without.

Current count may be a few over 10, and yes, I have thought about more than one additional coop. 🤭

Steve and I want to remind everyone that there are real people (and animals) behind these accounts and it’s very easy to just be kind or scroll away…

I put on my former teacher hat to share this with everyone. 🤭💗

I love a nice get out of town, but my favorite is time at home with nothing to do but hang with the animals and maybe read a book or two in the sunshine. Who’s with me?

Losing Dewey this last weekend has made me pretty sentimental. I was looking back through photos and while I don’t have a lot of pictures with me in them, I am so glad I have captured photos like these with The Girls.

I think I’ll start making more of an effort to be IN photos and videos and not just take them., even though my preference is to hide behind the camera.

Do you tend to stay behind the camera or are you good about getting in the captured memories?

Loss. 💔A part of keeping animals - especially any farm-type of animals - that never gets easier, necessarily, but does become more expected. Especially as they age.

My egg-layers are pets who live out their days once their prime laying days are finished. I cherish the time I get with each and every one and am grateful I have capacity and resources to offer this as part of my keeping journey. However, Everyone manages their laying flocks differently and I truly appreciate that each keeper does what they need to.

Regardless, loss is a part of that keeping and making the hard call to be the bearer of the burden to ease suffering is, to me, the worst kind of loss. Today I had to bear that burden.

I won’t get into the ailments, symptoms, or method - just know, I know my flock, did all I could over several months, and finally made the decision to break my own heart by stopping hers.

Fly high, Dewey. Say hello to your sister, Huey for me. I promise to take care of Louie in your absence until she joins you. 🌈💗
