Have you heard of Gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus)? These awesome geckos are part of a group known as the New Caledonian geckos, meaning they can only be found on the island of New Caledonia. They’re nocturnal and arboreal, and they also make great pets!! This one here is our girl Opal, in this picture she is “fired up” which means her colors and patterns change based on things like mood, activity, temperature, and other factors. They are avid jumpers and love climbing so having good climbing points for them and a tall enclosure are best. There are so many different species of geckos, if you’d like to know more about any of them, let us know! We’re happy to answer questions!

Let’s continue our trend from last week and talk about another one of our five venomous snakes in Missouri! Today we’re gonna talk about the cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus), also known as the water moccasin. Cottonmouths are a water loving species of snake, and luckily for us, all of Missouri’s native venomous snakes float on top of the water when they aren’t diving. There’s no such thing as a venomous snake that wants to bite someone, it takes a decent amount of their energy to make that venom so they don’t want to waste it on something that isn’t food or a threat. Cottonmouths get their name because when they feel threatened they coil up and sit with their mouth wide open (shown below) and show off that white mouth and fangs. The other picture attached shows that you can’t always tell a snake by it’s pattern, this is a cottonmouth but it has no pattern. If you see a cottonmouth out, just leave it be and it’ll go on its way when no one is scaring it! Hope this helps, let us know in the comments which species of rattlesnake you want to be covered first, the Pygmy, the timber, or the endangered massasauga!

With it being spring, we at Mo Morphs want to share helpful advice about some of our native snakes! We’ll start off with one of the most common venomous snakes in Missouri, the Osage copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix). While you can look for the diamond or V shaped head, a lot of snakes in our state can actually mimic this. So, the best ways to identify copperheads are by looking for a bright green tail on babies or looking for the “Hershey’s kiss” pattern along their sides as you can see in the picture attached. Remember to never touch a snake that you can’t 100% identify. Majority of venomous snake bites occur on the hands and face from people trying to relocate or harm the animals. A simple spray of the water hose will make them relocate safely!
