While hunting it is important to keep our best friend’s safety in mind. Make sure to keep them hydrated, watch for blue green algae, and place a well fitted vest to prevent trauma from sticks and unknown objects under the water. An interesting review on cruciate disease in sporting dogs. Most are unaware that it is a degenerative process that leads to the eventual tear of the cranial cruciate ligament. Genetics of our dogs play a role but as owners we have the ability to reduce their risk by keeping them at a health body weight.
There was a higher owner-perceived occurrence of cranial cruciate ligament disease compared to data collected from medical records. 🐶

The RRT launcher is a portable system. Light enough to put on your back and train in those areas you may not be able to reach by vehicle.
Kennel training is a valuable skill to train your pup. There are multiple instances where they may need to spend time in the kennel…injury, travel, at the vet clinic, or just to prevent them from chewing apart your house. These 2 travel well and enjoy their kennel. After getting done showering this is where I found these 2.

It’s that time of year in the Midwest! We recommend flea and tick prevention year round- Why? Because ticks can come out anytime it’s above freezing and fleas love to find warm homes on our dogs. Talk to your veterinarian about parasite prevention!
Ouch….that is one big sliver.
This dog had a draining tract that wouldn’t heal with antibiotics. A surgical explore was done to investigate the underlying cause. Well, we found our culprit…a stick had punctured the foot and the broke off inside. These pieces that were 3 cm long were removed! 2 weeks after surgery this dog is healed and back to his normal activities.
After spending time in the field it is important to look over your dog for any cuts or scratches. Doing so may prevent or help help get your dog healed and back to full speed if an injury occurs

Shed hunting time! Remember these antlers can be very hard and cause wear and even fractures of your dogs teeth. These fractures can lead to chronic pain, infection and severe periodontal disease leading to deficits in your dogs retrieving ability. Have fun, be safe and reward your dog with a softer dental chew after he finds you a awesome shed!

As the dogs get out of the field it is important to inspect for injuries. Injuries such as a laceration, grass seed under the eyelid, or broken toenails may not be obvious to see.
Remember to travel safe! This is a great example of what NOT to do. Solid one piece kennels that have locking doors keep your pet safe in case of an accident. Also make sure that kennel is secured while traveling! Enjoy traveling with the whole family safely!
Who wants their pet to live longer, be healthier all by spending less money?
We all do!! The easiest way to keep our furry friends healthy is to maintain a healthy body weight. An idea body condition score (BCS) is 4-5/9. Work with your veterinarian if you have questions about your pets weight. Look at the dramatic difference between a dog at a healthy body weight (4/9) and an obese dog (9/9).
Training never ends….keeping them conditioned in the offseason helps prevent injuries come “go time”

Are you prepared for a field emergency? Do you have a first aid kit? Do you know how to use what is in the kit?
Now is the time to prepare for an emergency. Make sure you kit is fully stocked and that you understand how to use the supplies.
Paw pad laceration can put your dog up for weeks as it heals. Taking precautions as to where your dog is running can help prevent your dog from missed time in the field as well as boots can be beneficial late season when the snow now has a sheet of ice over it.
This dog will be in a bandage for weeks as the tissue has time to heal over.

Do you carry hydrogen peroxide in your medical kit? It can be beneficial to have on hand in case of an emergency.
What should it be used for? Not for cleaning wounds, but rather to cause your dog to vomit.
Before using make sure you consult with your veterinarian on the amount to use and when to use it.
